The road to legal Louisiana online sports betting has been a long one, but it’s also one that continues to move forward with plenty of optimism.

January 2022: Louisiana online sports betting launched on Friday, Jan. 28, 2022, at 8 a.m. CT. Six online sportsbooks, FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars, BetMGM, Barstool and BetRivers, all went live on day one.

Ronnie Johns, the Louisiana Gaming Control Board chair, dispelled rumors that mobile sports betting could launch as soon as the first or second week of January 2022. Johns reiterated that the goal is to launch Louisiana mobile sports betting prior to Super Bowl 56 (set to be played on Feb. 13, 2022).

December 2021: A Louisiana Gaming Control Board revenue report revealed that eight retail sportsbooks took $27.6 million in bets during the first month of operation. A report by the Louisiana State Police later said all but one possible licensee had submitted their applications, and it too was pending. Additionally, the State Police are working on mobile licensing, with hopes of a January 2022 launch.

November 2021: Four physical locations receive sportsbook licenses to begin in-person sports betting.

October 2021: Although legal online sports betting has yet to launch, FanDuel Sportsbook, DraftKings Sportsbook and Caesars Sportsbook launch pre-register promos.

September 2021: After Hurricane Ida, sometime in October, is the first projected go-live date.

August 2021: The Louisiana Gaming Control Board approved emergency rules (Aug. 23). The licensing process thus starts and allows for permanent rules to eventually be established.

June 2021: Governor John Bel Edwards signs House Bill 697. It is enacted as Act 80. Suddenly, up to 41 online sportsbooks to launch in the state were allowed.

November 2020: 55 out of 64 parishes vote yes to online sports betting, allowing it to launch in those locations. Louisiana Gaming Control Board received the power to regulate sports gambling in the state.

May 2020: The new sports betting bill passes in the House. Two weeks later, it then passed in the senate. This paved the way for a ballot measure that asked each parish its wishes on legalizing sports betting.

March 2020: A newly constructed state legislature provides the optimism for a new bill to be introduced to the House.

June 2019: The state’s first attempt to legalize online sports betting fails. The state legislature may have approved daily fantasy sports, but the idea that online sports betting was included may been the thing that shut it down.

March 2019: The House offers up a bill that features Daily Fantasy Sports. It was the first move en route to softening the blow for legal online sports betting.
