Alabama offensive coordinator candidate reportedly turns down job offer

Ryan Grubb was in the mix for the Alabama offensive coordinator job, but has reportedly decided to stay at his current post.

Christian Caple of The Athletic reported that Grubb interviewed for the job on Monday, and received an offer, but has decided to stay at Washington as offensive coordinator. Grubb also did not receive a raise, Caple reported.

Alabama is in the process of replacing OC Bill O’Brien, who left after 2 years in Tuscaloosa to take over as the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots.

Grubb spent the 2022 season at Washington, and led the Huskies to the No. 2 offense in the country in total yards (516.2 yards per game) and the No. 7 scoring offense (39.7 points per game). The Huskies led the nation in passing offense last year, was second in total offense and seventh in points per game. Grubb’s offense was also known for several key plays that created momentum.

Grubb previously coached at Fresno State.

  • I don’t know about this one. Yes, Washington had an insane high fly offense but it was against teams that Vanderbilt would beat. Stats ain’t everything sometimes.

      • I say the same thing about Mike Bobo taking over the OC job from Todd Monken at Georgia.

    • grubb is loyal to deboer and i wouldn't read into him turning down the job as any real knock to saban and the current roster, but any uncertainty as to him being a big pick-up suggests a lack of knowledge of him. further, any critique of his accomplishments is pretty misguided.

there's a reason saban reached out to him.

    • Yeah, but look at the teams they played last season.hmmmm. The defenses of those teams was really weak. The thing is in the SEC dang the doggone defenses is at a level I can say with a NFL mindset. Some coaches don’t realize that till they get into the SEC. SEC put a lot of money into those coordinators because a lot of them have coached at the NFL level. It’s not the same out west, they put a lot of points up until they get a defense that will punch them in the mouth. Case in point Georgia and TCU. Defense just bullied them like it was a high school team. TCU still in shock. It set the Big10 back for years to come ? I’m still laughing about it because after the first quarter I just popped on a movie. ? before I turned on Prime Video I said Welcome to the SEC ?

  • Saban low-balled him. Saban came to him with that look what Alabama can do for you! He said nothing more than Washington can right now, and you want me to take what??? Thanks but no thanks!!!!!!!!!

    PS. Strike 1!!!!!!!!

    • How's your mother doing child m o l e s t o r? I only ask because I was balls deep in her a s s last night! She won't s h i t right for a week. And yes, I saw all the kids toys you have in the basement to entice them with you f u c k i n g sorry a s s child diddler.

    • Back to back Georgia buffoon …

Isn’t it interesting that Negan’s Georgia’s QB just got arrested and put in the slammer…

      What an outstanding knucklehead…

      Great example for young kids…

      Negan… the buffoon.

      lol!

    • You can make me go away for good p e d o p h i l e, all you have to do is meet me for lunch. I'm only about 10 minutes from you, we can get 3 rounds in before lunch is over, hell I don't even know if I would break a sweat! Meet me and I'll go away forever!

  • This is the way it always happens. The end of a dynasty starts slowly, and then comes all at once.

    • Thats what Clemson fans said a few years ago , and they disappeared instead. My money is on Alabama and Saban.

  • Why does an OC travel all the way across America after just receiving a raise that puts him at 2 million a year, and, at the same time, risk alienating the Washington fan base by flirting with ALABAMA on a lateral move at best?

    Yeah, he was interested.

    • Going from Washington’s OC to Bama’s OC is a lateral move?

Who you get your sh!t from? I need some of that!

      • Moving from 1 power 5 school to another power 5 school. That is a lateral. I realize that you are adding the name factor but since it doesn’t look like he was going to get a raise or a promotion it’s a lateral move.

      • Any lateral move at the elite level, and being paid 2 mil a year puts you in that hemisphere, is going to cost Grubb some serious loyalty points with the staff, head coach, and fans. I'm shocked this guy was willing to risk that kind of money and perception. He came to Tuscaloosa with one heck of an open mind.

  • The grass ain't always greener. Going from Washington to Bama puts a massive spotlight on him. Having to start with a new QB in your first year under Saban would be terrible. Bama went 10-2 this year with 2 respectable losses. They could have easily lost 2 more. For the same amount of money (or even if it was a little more), just stay where you are and don't have all that pressure. Plus you stay in a weaker conference and a few losses won't cost you your job
