Auburn lands commitment from East Carolina OL transfer

Auburn has picked up a commitment from a former East Carolina offensive lineman. Pirates transfer center Avery Jones confirmed the decision on Twitter Tuesday afternoon.

The 6-foot-4, 290-pound Jones was at East Carolina for the last 3 seasons. He declared for the transfer portal on Dec. 8 and initially committed to Illinois on Dec. 12. Jones started every contest in 2022 and all but 1 game in 2021 for East Carolina. During the shortened 2020 season, he finished with 8 starts and 9 appearances.

Jones started his college career with 2 seasons at North Carolina. He arrived at North Carolina as a 4-star prospect, the No. 12 prospect from North Carolina, and the nation’s No. 285 recruit for the Class of 2018. Jones committed to North Carolina over other offers such as Duke, Maryland, Virginia Tech and Vanderbilt.

This marks the 8th pick up along the offensive line for Auburn this offseason, which has consisted of 3 transfers (Jones, Dillon Wade and Gunner Britton), four high school recruits (Clay Wedin, Bradyn Joiner, Connor Lew and Tyler Johnson), and a JUCO prospect (Izavion Miller).

  • Freeze is turning years of rebuilding into months. Putting the medication right on the years of hurt. Really a unbelievable job. Got the feeling another big time player is right around the corner.

      • Funny thing is a lot of Auburn fans, myself included, wanted Kiffin for his prowess with the portal. Call me crazy but I think Freeze is dethroning Lane as the portal King. I was sure that we were headed for dark times making a coaching change late in the season with almost all the starting experience we had leaving after this season. Just incredible how he’s rebuilding the roster with quality players in such short order.

        • Don’t care what you call me, just call me. I’m sure after next year’s recruiting cycle when Freeze gets more than his fair share of the highly touted boys, the portal won’t be so important. No way he puts a competitive team to play this fall without the portal. Like anyone worth their salt, you accomplish the job you’re hired to do with the resources available.

        • I think you missed my point sds1966. I’m excited how dominant Freeze has been in the portal because that was the only way we were going to save the program from years of mediocrity. I don’t expect Freeze will have to rely on the portal very much after a few recruiting cycles. We just needed a jump start after what we were left with and Freeze is delivering that.

  • Wonder how many prostitutes it took to get a player from East Carolina, lol. Probably just short and fat
