Florida adds son of sitting US senator to roster as walk-on

Florida has added Miami (Fla.) Belen Jesuit Prep running back Anthony Rubio to the roster for the 2023 season.

Rubio is walking on with the Gators. He’s the son of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.).

A 5-foot-9, 165-pound running back, he appears to hold offers from Buffalo, Charlotte, and Bryant. Florida State was also showing interest in Rubio, hosting him several times, but coach Billy Napier and the Gators won out in the end.

Rubio also ran track in high school, posting a personal-best wind-aided 11.18 (3.7) in the 100-meter dash in March 2022. He was also part of a 4×100 squad that made it to regionals as a junior.

During his 3-year varsity career, Rubio carried the ball 229 times for 1,474 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also brought in 26 receptions for 324 yards and a touchdown. Rubio played a bit on the defensive side of the football, too, where he picked off a pass, recovered a fumble, and broke up a pass as a senior.

  • Sorry, kid. There is no democracy or government or rules at UF; not now. You do whatever Graham Mertz tells you to do. He's your daddy now.

      • No, it’ll be a Mertz-narchy! Graham The Mertznificent will be crowned Gator King by Gator Nation once he begins to decimate hapless SEC opponents in the fall.

  • The son of a former Senator would be a great fit, up there with Aaron Hernandez as a match made in Heav… err Hades territory

    Hunter Biden

  • Glad he chose to join us instead of Bryant.
Not sure the Senator is an Alum but I have heard him say that we need schools like FSU to be able and find a place for the kids that can’t get into UF to go to

    • RealCo, Sen Rubio was a 93 graduate of UF. That is some good competition the kid is playing against. Miami Northwestern is a Mecca of HS football in Miami and Cardinal Gibbons is really good at producing talent.

  • but coach Billy Napier and the Gators won out in the end...can't wait to see how many Swamp fans get booted out everytime Marco and his contingent of security want to come watch young lad sit on the bench during a game...we'll see who won out then...

    • Considering he’s a friend of the new UF president, Marco might just be able to score a couple of seats in his box on those occasions, don’t you think?

    • Little obsessed Humper trying hard to find a clever way to say something negative.
      Try harder fool
