Kansas online sports betting could go live as early as the end of 2022. Governor Laura Kelley signed SB 84 into law back on May 12, 2022, officially legalizing sports betting in the state.

The bill went into effect on July 1, 2022, yet sports betting and online sports betting remain unavailable to bettors in the Sunflower State.

That should not stop interested Kansas online sports bettors from pre-registering with DraftKings Sportsbook or FanDuel Sportsbook.

There has been some optimism that Kansas could give the green light to online sports betting operators as early as Q3 2022, but there hasnā€™t been a meaningful update on a potential launch timeframe in quite some time.

Still, most of the difficult hurdles have been cleared, including the passing of legislation and the signing of that legislation into law. Once Kansas gives the go-ahead to online sports betting operators, players will have the chance to wager on professional and collegiate sports.

If thereā€™s one potentially positive development, itā€™s that FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings Sportsbook have begun offering pre-registration bonuses, which typically indicate a launch could come sooner rather than later. Additionally, a number of other online sportsbooks have already partnered with Kansas casinos to prepare for launch.

Letā€™s dive into how Kansas online sports betting has gotten to this point, as well as which legal online sportsbooks could ultimately go live in the Sunflower State.

Note: If you are located in a state where online sports betting is legal and live, you can access any of the promos listed below.

Top Kansas Online Sportsbooks Expected to Launch

There are seven legal online sports betting apps that could very well launch in Kansas when the state gives online operators the green light. We can recommend and provide information about a number of these sportsbooks.

1. DraftKings Sportsbook

DraftKings Sportsbook became one of the first legal online sportsbooks to offer a pre-registration bonus to prospective bettors in Kansas. This offer gives players a $100 site credit bonus to use on any game or player bet once the app goes live. The best part about this offer is that it doesnā€™t prevent a player from also accessing a new user offer.

Currently, DraftKings has a $50 bonus bet + $1,000 deposit bonus offer for new players in other states. This bonus bet is eligible for use on any game, while the deposit bonus comes at a 20% match rate. That means if a bettor deposits $100, DraftKings will add $20 in site credit. Players who deposit $5,000+ will get an astounding $1,000 deposit bonus. DraftKings currently has a deal in place with Boot Hill Casino and Resort.

Potential Kansas Online Sports Betting Promos

Kansas online sports betting is legal, but not yet available to bettors in Kansas. The hope is that legal online sportsbooks will be available to bettors by the end of 2022.

Given that some sports betting operators have already struck deals with Kansas casinos, we can expect a number of current new user promos from other states to be available in Kansas.

These are the best current offers from legal online sportsbooks expected to launch in Kansas:

Which States currently have legal Online Sports Betting?

Kansas Online Sports Betting Eligibility Requirements

As outline in SB 84, any prospective online sports bettor would need to meet certain criteria to wager on sports. Players must be at least 21 years of age and be physically located within the state borders of Kansas. Other personal information will also be needed in order to establish a new sportsbook account. This includes:

Some sportsbooks may require further proof of identification, such as a driverā€™s license, passport, or social security card prior to activating an account.

How to Legall Place Online Sports Bets in Kansas

Online and retail sports betting are legal in Kansas, though the state hasnā€™t yet given operators the green light to launch. Hope remains for a potential Q3 2022 launch, though that has not yet been officially confirmed by any decision-makers at the state level.

SB 84 set parameters as to how many legal online sportsbooks could potentially launch in the state. Each of the stateā€™s four casinos can partner with up to three sportsbook operators for online sports betting. As such, there could be as many as 12 legal online sportsbooks in Kansas at the same time. As of August 2022, each casino has already partnered up with at least one sportsbook. Here are the current partnerships:

Deposit Methods

Most legal online sportsbooks offer the same deposit methods, though some legislation prohibits the use of credit cards for funding a sportsbook account. That is not the case in Kansas. Once online sports betting goes live in the Sunflower State, players will be able to fund their accounts using:

Available Bet Types

Legal online sportsbooks offer a wide variety of bet types in their sportsbook apps. Subsequently, many of these bet types are available on domestic and international sports leagues. Below, we will take a closer look at some of the most popular bet types and what they mean for sportsbook users.

Which Sports Players Can Bet On

Kansas bettors will likely have access to bet on many of the same sports as players in states where legal online sports betting is available. This includes widely popular sports, as well as lesser-followed niche sports. This includes sports, such as:

Kansas Online Sports Betting History

SB 84 Introduced to the Senate

The introduction of SB 84 came back on January 26, 2021. As was the case with sports betting legislation in other states, SB 84 had to be amended multiple times before a consensus was reached.

Progress Made, Bill Stalls

In March 2021, SB 84 bounced around from the Committee on Federal and State Affairs to the Committee of the Whole. The bill ended up being amended multiple times, but the failed to be passed.

SB 84 Reappears in 2022

Nearly a year after failing to pass, an amended version of the bill passed. Eventually, both the House and Senate adopted the Conference Committee report, paving the way for the legislation to end up on the desk of Governor Laura Kelly. Before the legislation could become law, it would need to be signed by the governor.

Governor Kelly Signs SB 84 Into Law

On May 12, 2022, just six days after the legislation was presented to her, Governor Laura Kelly signed SB 84 into law. Consequently, many bettors expected to be able to wager on sports immediately. Despite the legalization of sports betting, no timeline was set for the launch of betting in the state.

Potential Kansas Online Sports Betting Tax Revenue

One of the biggest questions surrounding the legalization of online sports betting revolves around how much tax revenue can be generated.

The tax rate varies quite a bit from state to state as a state like New York was able to negotiate a higher rate than a smaller state like West Virginia. In the case of Kansas, the tax rate of 10% is the same for online sports betting as well as retail sports betting.

Itā€™s hard to predict how much tax revenue will be generated, as it remains unclear when Kansas will give sports betting operators the green light. The NFL season is typically when sportsbooks see a massive uptick in betting-handle and wagers. If Kansas were to go live early in the NFL regular season, one could imagine a scenario in which Kansas pulls in a total handle of around $100m, which would generate about $10m in tax revenue.

Anyone expecting Kansas to do something like $500m in total handle in their first year should likely temper their expectations, as the lack of in-state professional sports teams will likely limit the potential betting market.

Additionally, one big question that needs to be answered is whether Kansas will see a larger-than-usual boom when college basketball begins. Given that the Kansas Jayhawks are one of the biggest contenders every year, itā€™s likely that bettors in the Sunflower State will activate at that time.
