Todd Monken, Georgia OC, to interview for NFL position, per report

Todd Monken has been a key piece for Kirby Smart’s Georgia staff, serving as the team’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach since 2020. Under his guidance, Stetson Bennett became a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2022.

Now, Monken will reportedly interview for an OC position in the NFL. According to Jenna Laine with ESPN, Monken is set to interview with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next week for the team’s OC vacancy.

Prior to coming to Athens, Monken had multiple stops in the NFL. One of those stops was with the BUccaneers from 2016-19, serving as the OC under then-head coach Kirk Koetter. Monken also had an OC stop with the Cleveland Browns during the 2019 season.

With Monken leading the way, Georgia’s offense has averaged 32+ points per game in 3 straight seasons and 38+ points from 2021-22. During the 2022 season, Monken’s offense finished 5th nationally at 41.1 points per game as the Bulldogs rolled to back-to-back national titles.

It remains to be seen if there is serious mutual interest between Monken and the Bucs, but it goes without saying that his stretch in Athens has been impressive, to say the least.

  • I hope Monken is just testing the market to get the most compensation that he can. Either way, I'm sure Kirby has a plan...

    • Notice she said " SOURCES TELL ME? " That's a good way out in case it doesn't happen! I don't pretend to know one way or the other. But I don't understand why Monken would want to give up being the highest paid OC in college football for a potential DUMPSTER FIRE GET FIRED IN 2 YEAR DEAL??????

PS. If you read this. DON'T DO IT TODD!!!!

  • I don't care if we have to pay him $7M a year, we need him for one more year since Faulkner is gone.

    • Yeah, because if Kirby called Buster with the chance to come back to Athens to be the OC with a better payday than he's getting at the NATS and the ability to coach much better players, he's going to decline the offer? Get real.

If Kirby the Closer wants Faulkner, he's getting him.

      • Let's maybe see how Faulkner does on his own for a year is all I'm saying. Hiring from within (ie. James Coley) doesn't always work with coordinator duties. But having McClendon and McGee is one heck of a backup plan.

        • I’m not sure judging an OC by his performance at GT, especially if it were a short tenure, would be a good barometer of his ability.

          GT is a basket case.

    • Not really. Still got a very good core with Devin White, Vita Vea, Mike Evans, Wirfs, and Chris Godwin among others. 8-9 last year...given the weak South, they could easily compete for a playoff spot again next year with some OL help. That was their weakness last year (due to injury of Jensen, departure of Kappa and retirement of Marpet).

  • Unfortunately if Tampa wants him they can dump money on him in a way that not even UGA could match.
If he does leave who picks up as OC? Bobo?
Would be humorous to see UGA come full circle next season with Bobo as OC and Muschimp as DC.

    • Yeah, that is 100% absolutely not true. I know you may not understand, because you're a Chicken at a lower-mid-tier SEC School, but Georgia's budget, if you saw it, would likely make you want to give up being a Sakerlina fan altogether because it would show you, for sure, just how far behind y'all are.

Todd could stay or go, but I guarantee money will have nothing to do with it.

  • Even if Tampa could pay him more. In the long run he will lose money. Because in the NFL you have what you have, and he can't coach defense to!!!!! If the head coach is fired in a year or two. Monken gets fired to!!!!!!

It makes zero sense in the long term. Anyway, no Bobo ain't no guarantee! Why didn't Kirby hire Bobo before????? Bobo did okay in 2012! Still I wouldn't be a fan of that move, but it would be the most talent he ever coached by a mile!!!!!!!

Monken needs to stay put!!! Kirby needs to go ahead and hire his new understudy!!!! If he would do it, and if he's able. (As in healthy enough) Mark Richt would be a home run hire if Monken ever leaves!!!!!

As for Muschamp? He's helped coach 2 straight national championship defense's!!! One was historic, and last season they were young!!!!

PS. Ill take that all day long and twice on Saturday!!!!

    • Coaches have egos...it's not the money. It's the chance to win at the highest level. That is why many (think Spurrier aka Daddy) try to NFL.
