Shane Beamer praises new OC Dowell Loggains as ‘instrumental’ in return of Spencer Rattler, Antwane Wells

Shane Beamer credited his new offensive coordinator with helping get 2 key players to return to South Carolina for 2023.

Beamer brought in former Arkansas assistant Dowell Loggains to be South Carolina’s offensive coordinator this offseason. While there will be changes to the offense under Loggains, QB Spencer Rattler and WR Antwane “Juice” Wells will be back to lead the Gamecocks. Beamer said both players met with Loggains before making their decisions to return for 2023.

“Had some great communication and conversations with Spencer, Juice and their families, along with Coach Loggains and Coach (Justin) Stepp,” Beamer told reporters Saturday. “They did a great job, everybody did.”

Beamer was asked to elaborate on how the decisions played out after Loggains was hired.

“Spencer was doing his research on Dowell, Dowell was talking to Spencer and getting to know each other, talking about the offense, and really just getting to know each other on a personal basis,” Beamer said. “… Those guys were able to spend a lot of time getting to know each other, and (Loggains) was instrumental in those guys coming back. They have to believe in him as a coach and as a person and what we’re going to do offensively also.”

South Carolina fans will get their first look at Rattler and Wells in the Loggains offense when the Gamecocks play their annual spring game.

  • Lo- ggains— I’ve been named the worst playcaller in the NFL! Learn from me! In the background we see the trophy, a plastic sculpture of a cow patty. Next to that, a third place trophy for a corn hole tournament.

    Rattler— money!

  • I'm reserving my judgement on Dowell until next season.
Fair or not, he needs to really be some kinda offensive savant immediately now Clemson just hired Garrett Riley.
