Bill, we all could do a better job than half of the writers on this site.
Just goes to show that Phil Knight's billion$ can reach all the way to the East coast and pluck a Columbia kid away from his hometown college.
Hey Alabama Fan: That same OL of ours that you decided to disparage was the same OL that blocked for Kevin Harris, when he led the SEC in rushing in 2020. That means he outrushed Najee Harris, Tank Bigsby, et. al.
According to a source close to the program it's already happened with one of our other portal transfers. So, we have become the equivalent of MLB's free agency, except the players don't have contracts at all. Dabo might be right that it is going to ruin college football. The monied programs will just buy their players on signing day, and then just poach anyone else they want from other teams. Anyone care to disagree? Too bad for Johnny Manziel, he was about 10 years too early to really cash in on this. Cam Newton's father did alright though.
It has already been mentioned, but we had no threat of a running game after middle of the second quarter. JuJu had a little success early, but Beal Smith had 5 carries for 8 yards rushing for the whole game. Notre Dame knew we were passing in the second half and they came after Rattler every play. The players going to the portal, opting out, or getting injured left us weakened on offense and defense. The defense was just gassed in from the late third quarter on. I was very proud of our players keeping us in a game. The writer of this article just needs to go find a job outside of sports journalism
We would have had many more 11 win seasons had 1) Assistant Coach Shane Beamer not left the program to accept a position on his father's staff at VA Tech; 2) DC Ellis Johnson not left to go become head coach at Southern Mississippi the same year; and (perhaps the most important) 3) HBC not become old and complacent and forgot how to recruit
This one I don't get. Bell and Stogner leaving I don't understand, but they transferred in from other programs. Lloyd had the 2020 preseason injury before he ever played a down. Last year it was evident that he had not fully recovered. This year, in spite of the early season games against Arkansas and Georgia (when the offense didn't play well), he was on schedule to reach 1,000 yards until the bad thigh bruise essentially ended his season. He would have been one of the top returning running backs in the SEC. Can't figure this one out.
All Gamecock fans are praying for Mike Leach. It reminds us of losing our own Coach Joe Morrison to a fatal heart attack back in 1989 when he was only 51 years old. He was a 13 year player in the NFL for the NY Giants (for those of you too young to remember him). Praying for God to heal Coach Leach.
Yes, Hurst was amazing at tight end, probably the best we had at the position since Willie Scott. His physicality contributed to his success. I remember a catch he made between two defenders and Todd Ellis said of him "That's a man out there!"
It's not Jessie's fault that he got it wrong. He doesn't have time to watch football games, what with his hosting cooking shows on Food Network and Daily Mail TV gigs. Give him a break
Were you watching the ABC broadcast of the game? They replayed it and the receiver who did not catch the ball was at least a half yard behind Uagaleilei. I think McDonough and his broadcasting partner were equally shocked by the non-reversal.
Are you sure those weren't SEC refs. Couldn't you tell from all the bad calls? They took away our recovery of the dropped lateral that we were going to waltz into the end zone by calling it an incomplete pass, and then had the audacity to review it and uphold it being called a pass. Then they called Rattler for intentional grounding from the end zone, when there was a receiver running back for the ball. I could go on, buy why continue.
1) So proud of our boys. I have lived through too many long Clemson win streaks in this rivalry. Beamer started his own win streak today! 2) If you are old enough to remember, when Sparky Woods changed quarterbacks mid-season to true freshman Steve Tanneyhill, we went on a winning streak topped off by Tanneyhill leading us to an upset win at Clemson. The mullet-wearing QB took a pen and signed his name to the Tiger Paw in the middle of the field, pi**ing off the CU fans. Someone should have given Rattler a pen and told him to do the same thing. 3) This is the Spenser Rattler we all have been waiting for that we saw these last two weeks. Our 5 Star QB outplayed Clemson's 5 Star QB today and he outplayed Hooker last week, probably the Heisman frontrunner. I hope he decides to come back next year and improve his resume, as it would make him a first round pick in the NFL draft. He played as good as any quarterback in the country the last two weeks.
Another comment regarding Matt Barrie's opinion. I don't think the Clemson Defensive Coordinator slept very well last night. Might have kept Dabo up some too.
A Steve Spurrier coached USC beat Arkansas in Brett Bielema's first year by a score of something like 50-7
I agree with the three of you. Nick was standing still and not moving to engage the UT receiver. He lowered his head first and the receiver lowered his head as he ran forward to Nick. A good friend was texting me from the USC press box and said it was classic targeting. Well, the targeting rule needs to be changed by the SEC/NCAA rules committee for situations where the defender was only defending himself. It is a flawed rule. By now we know that Hooker is lost for the season with his knee injury. Very sorry for him that it happened, and glad that it was not as a result of contact from one of our guys. Good luck to him in the draft. It was an unexpected win for us, but after we played poorly in last year's game in Knoxville and were down 28-0 in the first quarter, I think motivation from our players had a lot to do with it. Just two weeks ago we were outplayed by Missouri in a game I am sure our fan base, if not our players were expecting to win. I'm sure UT's players and fan base expected them to win. I am glad we were on the right side of this unexpected result. One last comment. In the last thirty seconds before cutting to the game broadcast, ESPN's studio host asked both of his "experts", some guy who predicted that UT would score 50 points on us, and then Dan "Clown" Mullen had to trump that, as he predicted they would score 60 on us. Well Mullen, you were right about the number, you just were wrong about the team that would reach 60 points. Maybe that is why you now wear suits on Saturday and watch games thousands of miles away from football fields.
Yeah, I don't know which coach made the call to go for it on fourth and two, but that thinking could have been disastrous if it cost us the game. The ease with which A&M moved the ball down the field in that last minute and then converted the onsides kick after their field goal put the win in serious jeopardy. They needed their head examined.
A Clemson fan friend of mine congratulated me at church yesterday morning. I told him thanks, that it only took 9 years! Looking forward to some payback against Missouri this Saturday!
When he played for us he was outstanding. When his pro baseball career did not work out, Mushchamp gave him a football scholarship and he made the most of it. I always pull for the NFL team he is on.
The CIA has an expression called "blowback". That is when a situation that you were responsible for creating blows back up in your face. Well, Mark Stoops has a Band-Aid on his buttock cheek today, because what came out of his mouth came back and bit him where the "sun doesn't shine".
Amen to that. After it happened, I thanked a UK fan for the bulletin board material his coach provided. Thanks again, Mark. Karma
How Kevin Harris led the SEC in rushing in 2020 given our offensive line is amazing. Let's hope the four OL recruits in this year's signing class can bring immediate help next year. At least three of them are ranked four stars
Tidefan: You are very correct in your assessment. After Week 2, Arkansas and Week 3, Georgia, we all will have a better idea what kind of quarterback he will be. A lot will depend on how well he is protected in the pocket. I hope he stays around for his senior year. Our talent level is rising fast considering the upcoming signing class Beamer and staff are accumulating.
Yeah PJatHome: Last year in Columbia it was Luke Doty's first start following his preseason ankle injury, and he was obviously not 100%, and you won by 6 points. This year we are a "tad" better at the position. Thank Stoops for the bulletin board material-I don't think anyone in the SEC bought his BS denial that he wasn't talking about Beamer and USC. I am looking forward to his post game comments this year after his loss. He has got Calipari to fight with. He doesn't need to be ticking off other schools in the conference with his mouth.
Stoop's 6 pack turned into a spare tire at some point.
Oh, and Blue Man, please thank Mark for the bulletin board material. October 8 will be here before you know it.
Blue Man. Understand something. Those losses began under Spurrier when "he forgot how to recruit" in the last years of his coaching career that lead to him resigning in the middle of a year. Then, those losses continued under Muschamp, who wouldn't understand offensive football if his life depended on it. He had four different offensive coordinators in his five and a half years of coaching before he was fired. Trust me, I am sure that Beamer is a better coach than Muschamp will ever be. Muschamp couldn't even win at Florida with all their talent. I like Stoops and UK, but I see your streak of success against us becoming much more balanced.
Another top DL recruit. Beamer and his staff are doing an excellent recruiting job. I think this young man and his staff can get us back to where Spurrier had us 10 years ago!
