Understandable why he left Atlanta. Here he gets hired, and his best player (the NFLs best player at the time) gets indefinitely suspending for financing a dog fighting ring) and this was right after they traded their backup QB, Matt Shab, to Houston.
Finebaum is such a little man. If someone not connected to one of his favorites has a chance at success he will figure out a way to criticize and condemn. That’s just how he rolls.
In 50 years of closely following college football, I’ve never seen a team with more injuries than the 2022 Aggies. They lost 2 QBs, a likely All-American Center, an all SEC caliber DT, a starting offense guard, their best WR playmaker, two starting corners, a starting safety and a starting TE. Plus, their other starting guard was playing hurt all year until the LSU game. You have to take these things into account. How would Georgia do with such a plethora of injuries? They sure wouldn’t be in the CFP. And you Gators would not have gone bowling. But I get it. Every fan in this game tries to push narratives because they believe if enough fans do that, this will negatively impact their competitor’s recruiting.
Weigman was tge top rated QB last year. Anyone who comes in this year will have to sit behind tgethe incredible talent and they know it. That’s the problem bringing in a new QB. As to the guys in the portal, only two were starters and they’d been basically booted from the team for non-football related reasons. I expect 1 or 2 of the others will reverse course. Most of these l guys are inpatient and want to start right away or they are gone. Once A&M names it’s OC, if it is one of the 4 guys whom I think it is, expect a lot of transfers on the offensive side. People are going to want to play very badly for any of these 4 coaches.
And you know this how? Answer: you don’t. You’re just trying to kick a program that’s down so you can press your advantage in recruiting. So obvious.
Here’s the thing about Jimbo’s offense. It works really really well if he’s got a top shelf QB and top shelf OL. If he doesn’t his offense struggles mightily. What does that say about him as a coach? I mean what the heck. Doesn’t everyone’s offense do well when they have an all-world QB and an all-world OL?
If they are so bad then how is it two days ago they dominated LSU?
You didn’t have near the injuries. Just stop. We lost three OL guys. Much harder to replace than a receiver. We also lost a starting QB, a starting DT, a starting LB, a starting safety, 2 starting receivers and a starting CB. One of those starting receivers was our best playmaker Anias Smith.
The reality is a season can turn on a dime. Take A&M. In more than 50 years I’ve never see. A more injured team. No doubt this is due the large percentage of 18-19 year old starters on their team. Let’s see how Georgia woukd due if they lost 40% of its starters including 3/5ths of the OL Further, add to the mix the fact that the Aggies did not get a quality QB until November. Yes, he was on the roster from day 1 but it’s so hard to put a true freshman into the starters role early in their freshman year. Finally, the portal is a game changer. Look at how quickly it reversed Tennessee’s and Ole Miss’ fortunes. These are key elements thst the OP’s “analysis” doesn’t take into account. If I didn’t know better I’d think OP was trying to push a narrative. And really, for most games A&M was not that far away from a win despite its injury situation. For example, look at how close they came to beating Bama in Tuscaloosa. The refs there could have easily have called PI on that last play. Had they done do, A&M woukd lijely have won that contest. And look at this weekend. A&M dominated the 3rd best SEC team. Next year with only a little tweaking (and luck in the injury department) the Aggies could be really really good next year.
Then might as well stop the bleeding snd give him the pink slip. A&M can easily afford it. Just chalk it up to experience. My dad grew up on a farm in tge depression. He had a saying. Sometimes you’re out there and you step on a cow patty. You have 2 choices. You can keep stepping in it or you can just shake it off and get on down the road. A&M should strongly consider shaking off Dumbo. Hire Neon Dion and call it a day. Hell, if they hired Sanders they’d likely get a bunch of recruits committed to their programs to change their plans. I mean what the heck. If I’m a recruit would I rather play for Dion or Kelly or Smart? Hands down it’s the former.
If after this year he believes that his time in College Station will be short lived. One thing Jimbo’s system requires is an all-world offense line. In today’s world of early departures annd the transfer portal it’s unrealistic to have such an offensive line at the college level on more than just a once every few years at best. If he doesn’t understand that by now he needs to change his name to Dumbo.
But it would be a step up actually. Why? A lot of people don’t think the offensive resurgence in Knoxville is due to Golesh. They think it’s Huepel. If he came to College Station and was successful he’d leave no doubt it was him. That then paves the road for him to get a really sweet head coaching gig. Nonetheless if I were king of the Aggies, Golish would be a far distant fourth choice. My order of preference would be: 1) Garrett Riley. Really surprised the OP made no mention of him and the A&M job. 2) UNC’s Longo. 3) Wake’s Roggerio.
That’s even more worthy of condemnation than not having the right the scheme. I say that because its up to the coach to put his players into a position to execute. Jimbo was clearly one of the best coaches in college football in 2020. Now he’s the worst. I just don’t get it.
Dumbo has had a new strategy. He’s been giving his OL guys progesterone. And they play like it too.
Definitely. The reality, however, is that with those kind of losses, it’s pretty doubtful LSU would have won yesterday. And likely the game between UT and GA would have been much closer. Those loses to the A&M are just catastrophic. We need to make changes with the S&C program in a big way.
All I can say is I’ve been following this game for more than 40 years. In all those years I’ve never seen a team more devastated by injuries than the 2022 Aggies. Lost were the starting center, starting L guard, 2 starting WRs, 2 starting DEs, starting CB, starting LB, starting nickle, starting safety and to add a cherry on top today the starting QB. Plus a slew of backup players have been lost to injury, All together 19 players lost to injury and illness. Plus two starters to suspensions (a DB and yet another receiver).
Here are the facts about A&M’s roster: Of the 130 players on A&M’s roster, 65 are freshmen. The roster is 70% underclassmen. A&M has had 7 freshmen start on O and 7 start at different positions on D. 14 of 22 positions with a freshman starter.
There are some of those older guys there still but they’ve also had a stunning number of injuries and early departures for the NFL.
I agree. Jimbo has to let the new OC call plays and have a certain degree of autonomy. Otherwise the guy won’t even consider the job.
Yes it is actually. Jimbo will have to cede control over calling plays. No top guy will come there if that doesn’t happen. That aside, some of these top shelf OCs are not ready to be head coaches at the power 5 level and they know it. A&M can pay the most. Plus, some of these OCs’ reputations are deeply connected to their head coach’s rep. A lot of people think, how much of that is the HC vs how much is the OC? They come to A&M and turn that offense around — that will be the ultimate proving ground to establish they are worthy of a high level head coaching job. That’s because people will know that was the OC’s doing, not Jimbo’s. Also, A&M will by this time next year have the finest football facilities in the nation — college or pro. You should see what they are building there right now for their football program. It’s mind blowing they have that much to spend but I guess that’s the way it is with the price of oil being high. They are in a really good location to land elite talent right in the middle of the Texas triangle. They can afford to pay the tilop OC pay nationally. Of course that kind of coaching talent will come given the opportunity — again, provided Jimbo turns over play calling duties and let’s the new guy hire most of his offensive assistants.
No sinking ship. Just a really down year by one of the country’s youngest teams. And a lot of fans and media types who covet A&M players and recruits who spew out a false narrative because they want to steal those recruits and players. It’s what fans do in college football. This is a down year and come December big changes coming in A&M’s staff. Expect A&M to hire one of the finest offense minds in collegiate football as an OC. With what the Aggies are willing to pay non- playoff team’s OC will be safe from getting poached. Very soon proven top OC is going to get a big raise — either because it will come from A&M or because A&M is going to force some program to give its OC a mind blowing raise. That team’s fans better hope their program’s donor class has really really DEEP pockets.
Losing out would not be all bad for the Aggies. Fisher is a very proud man and that woukd really fracture his ego. It may take something like a catastrophic season to force Jimbo to finally make the needed changes.
Talent is a relative term. In terms of winning now, I’d rather have a 3-star veteran 21-22 year old upperclassman who has spent 3-4 years in a Power 5 S&C program any day over a 5-star 18 year old true freshman.
A&M is a total mess right now. 4-8 woukd not surprise me. Maybe they need a new S&C guy. They have a ridiculous number of injuries especially on the OL.
A&M really loaded up on defense. Wish they’d done the same on offense especially since they’ve really been hit by injuries and their depth is much less on offense than on defense. Gone are it’s left guard and center. It’s right guard is just limping along and not 109 per cent. Plus it’s best offensive weapon, Smith, is out.
Such offensive line trouble this year for the Aggies. That’s on the OL coach. However, I heard through the grapevine that their OL coach is only half way there as a coach because he’s been out sick a lot. Talk about bad luck. Hope he’s okay.
Jimbo runs a sophisticated NFL-style West Coast offense. It’s just too much for 18-20 year olds and requires a super elite QB to operate. What’s so hard to understand about that? Is his ego so gigantic that he can’t recognize something so obvious?
We’ve seen the photos. Thst defender had his arm around Stewart. Looked like his was hugging the Aggie receiver almost like they were a romantic item. Lol.
You guys know the rules. On a Saturday night in Tuscaloosa on the last play of the game with the contest still in doubt Alabama has been accorded the God-given right to drape their defenders all over the opposing team’s receivers. We all saw the video and the photos. Thems SEC football rules!
