Bill O'Brien leaving Alabama for another job, per reports
Bill O’Brien is leaving Alabama to return to the New England Patriots as the offensive coordinator, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Low.
O’Brien has been Nick Saban’s offensive coordinator over the last 2 seasons, and he’s set to make a return to the NFL in New England. Alabama fans have been frustrated at times with O’Brien as the team’s offensive coordinator during his tenure.
This offseason, Saban has now lost both coordinators. Former defensive coordinator Pete Golding left Alabama for the same job at Ole Miss to coach alongside Lane Kiffin. Now, O’Brien is also leaving.
Saban and Bill Belichick are close friends, and O’Brien returning to the Patriots has been speculated for some time. O’Brien was the Patriots offensive coordinator during the 2011 season before leaving for the Penn State head coaching job.
For Saban, O’Brien leaving marks the 6th different offensive coordinator Alabama will have in the last 8 seasons.
So who replaces him? Dan Mullen is who I believe would be a good fit. But we all know he isn’t into that recruiting thing so idk.
Joe Brady is another although he seems to like the NFL better.
Who else?
HALLELUJAH, HALLELUJAH, HALLEEEEEEEEEEEEEELUJAH!
Now who will Saban replace him with?
Urban Meyer is available (ducking)
Heard a lot chatter about Jeff Lebby. Former Ole Miss OC and now at OU.
Maybe Alabama can get Kliff Kingsbury or Joe Brady, Bill o Brien was to predictable, bad play calling and no creativity, I hope Alabama can get back to Running the ball more
With Justice Haynes coming in and Roydell Williams and Jase McClellen staying, we might have a monster ground game this year.
I hope so maybe they will go back to the power run game and play action
I just never understood why Bama fans didn’t like BoB. Led a top 5 offense. Don’t be surprised if they take a step back.
Mainly because of his predictably, didn’t call him Bubble Screen o’Brian for nothing.
He always wanted to pass on the goal line every single play , we got away from the run game way to much the past couple seasons
Especially with Gibbs it was even more annoying because he was a workhorse and and insane freak and we just throw three straight incompletions when Gibbs can sucker punch right through.
I think he also led the nation in calling 1st down pass plays that led to incompletions.
57 of 64 redzone scores, 44 of them TDs. The actual stats don’t seem to support yours.
38 sacks…that’s a more telling stat. Fire the OLine coach now…
O-Line has been shaky for a while now but for me, its the receiving corps that needs to step up the game because dropped balls were soooo often in clutch situations and it got infuriating real quick.
Overall, BOB’s offenses graded out well. But the feeling was that Bama was constantly in 2nd and long situations that Bryce had to overcome and that Bama depended on explosive plays way too much instead of stringing together successful plays.
I neither happy nor concerned about his departure. I’m more of a “let’s wait and see what we get to replace him” type of mindset.
This^^^
Bama might take a step back on offense but that wont because we lost BoB. It will be because we lost Bryce.
so, with the loss of bryce and understood high praise on him, of which i certainly agree with…..and the loss of the OC (needing to potentially learn a new system), questions surrounding the skillset of the current grp of wrs, needing to replace maybe the most underrated rb in the country, etc.
what’s the floor, record wise that you see for 2023? personally, i think there’s more reason for uncertainty and doubt heading into ’23 than any season under saban.
The floor? 10-2.
You have to watch the games to understand. A lot of Alabama’s offensive gains was Bryce Young improvising; complete failure to develop a WR in 2 years; 3rd or 4th and short situations, especially big ones, were stopped more often than they succeeded.
One could argue Bryce Young’s shoulder injury was the result of unconsciously knowing that he had to make a play because the guy calling plays wasn’t going to help.
BoB was not responsible for the coaching of the receivers, or the OLine. He was the QB coach that taught Bryce how to improvise.
O’Brien was the offensive coordinator. He was responsible for the offense.
I mean if he had to do all that no wonder he’s so mid ?
If you were a Houston Texans fan during his years as head coach and GM, you understand and wouldn’t have had to ask that question. He’s only as good as the talent on the team he’s coaching. That talent overcomes his pattern of being predictable and lacking the vision of how to run the RPO offense.
Milroe piloting whatever offense Coastal Carolina was running would be dope with all the talent stacked in the backfield at Bama
That’s a scary thought, just stop!
Florida hasn’t had an offensive coordinator in years and look how good we’re doing……oh wait. We ain’t doing.
Ok, but no big deal. It seems Saban has to replace coordinators every year, and it never seems to slow down the elephants.
I disagree…1 Natty in 5 seasons appears to be a slow down to me…
Nobody saw that coming.
It seemed like Saban was cashing in a lot chips to try and get him a job.
Where did BOB rank in yards per attempt?
7 yards per play.
Just like Nikki hoped he’d get Glenn Schumann he’s not getting Todd monken. It’s a hard pass from both of them. Bama is not the new Georgia.
Take Jimbo please!!!!
Oh no…jumbo is your gift that will keep on giving, aTm fans…
Nothing New though Alabama replaces coaches every year I’m surprised bill made it as long as he did, This is the end of Alabama though buried and gone, Some other people hope so anyway, lol it’s sad to see I mean every time a new article comes up here they come hating
