Stetson Bennett IV haters: Take a walk and realize this dude is a college football legend
I feel for you, Stetson Bennett IV haters. Monday night wasn’t for you.
In your ideal world, the final chapter of the Bennett story would’ve been a sad one. You would’ve fired off tweets about his height, brought up his Heisman Trophy credentials and cackled at the Georgia fans who defended No. 13 from Blackshear, Ga.
But of course, that’s not how it went.
Instead, Bennett’s story ended with him walking off the field at the 13:25 mark of the 4th quarter. With another national title under his belt, Bennett made his way over to Kirby Smart, who greeted him with a hug before he could reach the sideline. A curtain call with that much time left in a national championship wasn’t what the anti-Bennett crowd hoped for, and it’s safe to say the doubters had already turned on Netflix by the time he was greeted by Georgia fans at SoFi Stadium with literal bows.
You can’t make this up. You can simply step back and appreciate it.
Even you, Bennett haters.
The man closed his career as a college football legend. Six total touchdowns. In a national championship. He joined Joe Burrow as the only player in the BCS/Playoff era to account for 6 total touchdowns in a game.
No, Bennett haters. Drop your weapons. I’m not about to say that Bennett was a better college quarterback than Joe Burrow. This isn’t about that. This is about appreciating someone who, as Kirk Herbstreit said, might just be the most decorated quarterback of the Playoff era.
Even though Bennett won’t be eligible for the College Football Hall of Fame because he was never named an All-American, there’s no denying that he’s one of the most decorated quarterbacks we’ve seen in the 21st century. He joined Matt Leinart and AJ McCarron among the quarterbacks who repeated as a national champ.
Give me Bennett over both guys.
Why?
Cover your eyes, Bennett haters. You’re not gonna like this part.
This is the part where I point out the fact that Bennett played in 4 Playoff games and he earned Offensive MVP honors in all of them. Think that’s just handed out to the quarterback by default? OK.
Entering tonight, Bennett had a quarterback rating of 185.97 against teams that were currently in the AP Top 25, and it was at least 180.0 in 6 of those 7 games. That was the best in America and 6th in the Playoff era. And again, that was before the whole 304-yard, 4-touchdown pass day from Bennett, which didn’t even include the 2 rushing scores.
In the last 2 seasons, Bennett started against 11 teams that were ranked in the AP Top 25 at the time of the matchup. In those games, he:
- A) Had a 28-3 TD-INT ratio
- B) Averaged 10 yards/attempt
- C) 8 games w/ multiple TDs and no INTs
- D) 2 games with an INT
- E) All the above
It’s “E.” It’s always “E.”
I know, I know. “Anybody can look elite throwing to Brock Bowers,” Bennett haters would say. It’s fair to say that Bennett has weapons. Most elite teams do. It’s also fair to say that Bennett delivered darts to Bowers, Ladd McConkey and anybody else who was on the receiving end of one of his on-target passes.
Whatever Todd Monken dialed up, Bennett executed it to a T. The duo that Bennett admitted to the ESPN crew “was more a of a love-hate relationship” looked as in sync as one could’ve. There wasn’t a rough 30-minute stretch from Bennett like we saw in the Peach Bowl. There was just dominance.
It’s hard to fathom why there could still be Bennett skeptics. Fatigue? Heisman Trophy invite frustration? Limited NFL upside?
None of that matters. Bennett’s résumé will go down as one of the greatest we’ve ever seen in the sport. On a night in which he moved past Aaron Murray for the all-time single-season Georgia record for passing yards on a season, Bennett quieted the “game manager” narrative 1 final time. The only Playoff game in which Bennett failed to have a quarterback rating of at least 187.0 was last year’s championship, when he was perfect in the 4th quarter to come back against Nick Saban’s defense.
He made it look easy. The poise, the post-touchdown smirks to the sideline, the “aw shucks” postgame attitude. It’s not supposed to look this easy. “I was just trying to do my job and we ended up here,” Bennett told Rece Davis on the postgame podium.
Bennett did more than his job. His job was originally to be the scout team quarterback to simulate Baker Mayfield ahead of the Rose Bowl (in case you forgot). Then it was to dig Georgia out of an offensive rut when D’Wan Mathis struggled in the 2020 opener against Arkansas.
Somewhere along the line, Bennett’s job changed, whether he acknowledged it or not. He had to be historically great in order for Georgia to be historically great.
He was.
Bennett is the unquestioned best quarterback in Georgia history. The question now is whether he deserves to be remembered as the best player in Georgia history. Time will tell.
As Bennett soaked in the scene during his postgame interview with Holly Rowe, he had a hard time finding the words to process what he did. One thing Bennett did realize? Smart doesn’t dial up curtain calls for everyone.
“That was special,” Bennett said. “I’ll remember that for the rest of my life.”
Even the Bennett haters should’ve been able to agree on 1 thing by night’s end.
That was special, alright.
The book is definitely coming out…stay tuned…even the great Buck Belue didn’t accomplish what Stets accomplished.
Thank you Stetson. More words fail me.
DGD that will be missed. Never understood the hate. Go Dawgs!
Never hated him, but I was very critical of him that Dwan Mathis year, and even so the first National Title year.
Never doubted him this year, and kind of sucks to see him go.
props for admitting. many either won’t or can’t admit that they were once very critical. i think a safe ratio would be no less than 2/3 of the fan base was critical of him up until the ob against mich. after the title last year, that # likely fell to ~10 – 15%…though to defend some, cks was clearly not sold on stet running it back in ’22 either.
as for your critique in ’20, outside of the bama and uk games, he had a very good year. yes, very good.
ark- 20/29 for 211 yds 2/0 td/int—big comeback in relief
aub- 17/28 for 240 yds 1/0
tn- 16/27 for 238 yds 2/0
bama- 18/40 for 269 yds 2/3
uk- 9/13 for 131 yds 0/2
uf- 5/16 for 78 yds 1/1—-but should have never gone back in the game after that shoulder injury…but mathis was so bad
he’s been around for six years! even that much time will make the below average quarterbacks average quarterbacks. ah la hendon hooker and jayden daniels.
So stet can never make the HOF cause he wants an All-American? I didn’t look up the rules but seems absurd if that’s the case…
Stetson is already in the UGA Hall of Fame. He’ll be in the CFB Hall of Fame too.
They can’t put him in cfb hall of fame. All American is a pre requisite. How he is not all American I have no idea.
Is he the GOAT to never be an All-American?
good ques. i think it’d be fair to say he’s likely the goat of qbs to have never been recognized as an all-american
They need to revisit that. Back to back MVPs in the national championship. It would be insane for him not to be in the HOF.
If you had told me 3 years ago that we would accomplish all this with Stetson as our qb I would’ve laughed. I’ve never been so happy to be so wrong. What a legend…he’s a DGD 4 life. Go dawgs!
you’re certainly not alone. incredible.
I think the author made a mistake. Didn’t he mean to write this about Hendon Hooker and how he should have been invited to NYC? I’m confused . . .
Should have been the Heisman winner. Build the statue!
There was an article yesterday on SDS rating the best ten players in the national championship game.
Stetson Bennett was not on it.
TCU’s right guard was #8.
Stetson Bennett was not on it.
Laughable. A complete joke.
Lol! What a great point 98!
That was a list of the 10 best players on the field when TCU has the ball. IE only TCU offense and UGA defense. He was in the list of the 10 best players when UGA is on offense tho
Can’t wait to see him drafted and fall a part.
He will….
But he won 2 nattys!
Stetson > Tebow
Naaa
Teblow didn’t win 2 natties. Chris Leak won the first one. Stetson > Teblow.
Yeah but Tebow isn’t an absolute pulsing as shole
But you are. A Tebow never went undefeated either. Stay Salty
2008
Yep. Tebow’s squeak show tires—like Lou Holtz on too much SweetnLow.
being drafted would be another feather in his cap!
Amazing, even your darkest wishes include incredible successes for UGA.
If….he does
Cry more, ‘turd.
Hey, maybe your team will finish above .500. At some point.
Yeah….
Stetson ain’t Tebow, or any other great Gator QB.
You’re right.
He’s better than Tim Tivo. He’s better than Wuerffel. He’s so much better than Spurrier that it’s not even close.
And the fact that deep down in your ‘turd heart you know that’s true makes it all the sweeter.
Stetson > Tebow and it’s not even a debate.
Also not debatable – Georgia owns Florida.
What Heisman did your little bf win? No one liked him, he was an assh ole
15-0. Name the Gator Greats that went undefeated. I’ll wait chump
Delusional, at best. You must’ve been playing with your stuffed gator when the game was on.
Don’t tell him what he can’t do. He will prove you wrong!
“Can’t wait to see him drafted and fall a part.”
He’s not Tim Tebow or Danny Wuerfful.
Dang dude, can’t you just recognize a tremendous college career and move on. He owned both the teams we pull for and the FBS. Get over your Tebow crush and acknowledge what is right in front of your face.
If you want to see such a thing keep up with AR.
Most folks don’t understand that pro football is a different game than college football. I don’t care about pro football. My heroes are Tim Tebow, AJ McCarron, Brock Bowers, Stetson Bennett and that QB guy from TN that threw the ball lights out before he got hurt. He might play pro ball, he might not. He may become a great coach or a great business man. He is a winner with nothing left on the field to prove.
I can’t wait to hear what Erik Ainge has to say now haha
“He’s a national champion punk.”
I think we should ask him…everyday!
Can’t argue the stats.
Bennett over Matt Leinart and AJ McCarron? That’s a bridge too far.
Stenquavious will live in immortality
He’s the jawja Tebow… yet he’s a twa t. Tebow wasn’t ever a twa t. Grats jawja
Your tears are delicious! Yes! Mmmmmmm! Yummy! So salty and delicious! Mmmm!
Article is about the cun-t QB for jawja….
Lol…little envious turd fan…
Why? He’s an as shole
You mad bro?
“Article is about the cun-t QB for jawja….”
You should cry like Tebow did.
“The Florida Gators WILL win a National Championship with Anthony Richardson at Quarterback”
Your Coach is Billy Napier. You just had an embarrassing losing season. You lost to all of your rivals. Half your team left for the transfer portal like rats on a sinking ship. Florida recruiting is non-existent compared to their rivals.
Let all of that sink in.
Georgia owns Florida.
“He’s the jawja Tebow”
Tebow never went undefeated. Bennett never cried on live tv twice.
Tebow is his own brand of annoying. Great college QB, annoying analyst with the voice of a prepubescent 11 year old.
Tebow was a crybaby.
Did he shoot anyone? Last I heard that was the Gator Standard lol
You’re not a great QB unless you shoot someone – FU standards.
or steal a laptop
“or steal a laptop”
FU should have given him one in the first place.
Where is this hate coming from? I’ve seen no examples of Bennett being a punk, ever.
He’s not. Can be cocky. But so what. Get over yourself boltraytor
He’s earned the right to a little cockiness, I’d say.
Why does Bennett ALWAYS get dinged for having Bowers and Washington to throw to, but Bryce Young and CJ Stroud and Tua and every other title winning QB ever is NEVER dinged for throwing to much better WRs? WHY?
Did any of you morons know McConkey and Mitchell were 3-star recruits? No? Did you know Washington is the ONLY major contributor on the Georgia offense that’s a 5-star outside of the o-line? No?
All y’all’s excuses can be stuck where the sun don’t shine, where your heads already are.
Why is he a tw@t?
Why are you a dips***?
gainesville is full of em, that’s why!
I’ve literally never seen him criticized anywhere for having other players to throw to. Every QB has to throw to somebody. Tbh, his receiving corps has stars but isn’t quite elite as a group.
I really don’t get Dawg Nation’s absolute *obsession* with made-up slights. It’s bizarre.
It’s literally talked about in the article above. Did you read it before you came down here to be negative?
That’s O’Gara’s own made up straw man of quote, not referencing a source, you dolt.
I see. So people responding to what is in the article is bad. And pointing that out makes me a dolt.
I’ll leave you to your sad little bucket of bitterness.
What’s in the article is exactly what I said it was … made up.
All thongs Georgia have gotten nothing but love in sports media for a year and counting.
You’re the bitter one, and on the best night in Georgia history too.
Now that’s effing sad.
Naa. They were ranked behind Tennessee in the first playoff poll and most of the media crowned “Saban’s best team ever” as the champs in the preseason
Stetson had absolutely been dinged for the talent around him. Just because you’ve been under a rock and haven’t read it, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.
It will be fun to watch jawja fans defends this guy when he hits the nfl
It’s fun watching clowns like you put down a guy who just won back to back nc’s…just because your gators suck and you have nothing better to do…how many of those great gator qb’s done anything in the NFL?
Time to put the shine down and totter off to bed, Sparky. It’s Kirby’s world right now and you’re just a tenant.
You must have a pathetic life.
I don’t give a rip what he does in the NFL. Did Tim Tebow’s or Danny Weurfel’s NFL performance take away from their time in Gainesville?
I’m the same way. I hope he goes and gets a shot, but for me as a Dawg fan that would be icing on the cake. So, he goes to the league and gets 6 figures for holding a clip board. He’s still got two Nattys in his pocket and will never have to buy a beer or a meal in the state of GA ever again!
“It will be fun to watch jawja fans defends this guy when he hits the nfl”
I’m not a UGA fan and I’ll def cheer the guy on.
Wasn’t that Tebow hawking vacuums during the Big Stet Show last night?
The only doubters Stet ever had were on staff. He’s been universally lauded by the media for over a year. His play shows he deserves the props.
Exactly, I think the hate comes from the extensive repetition of his long journey by the media. I’m pretty sure by now everyone who owns a tv knows he was a walk on, wasn’t wanted, came back, dug a tunnel to practice field to work on drills at night etc…. I think the question that should be asked is “ how many qb’s would have lead these 2 UGA teams to a title”, think Bryce Young or Stroud could have done it……. Bennett deserves the love, but it’s the same “Tebow Love” we have seen before.
Nah, 100% of the hate towards Georgia stems directly from the obnoxious behavior of the overwhelming majority of their fans.
Just go read any post by the big UGA fans here like jay.cardea, Dawgs2021, gwhite, Corch, or LegHumper … constant, slavering, belligerent, blind, Georgia-homer nonsense.
It’s who their fanbase is …
Did you really just list gwhite as a UGA homer???
credibility…lost
If you can’t get the list right just go away!
Gabe is having a hard time keeping all the characters straight…bless his heart. Sure hope Bama shows up next year so MLC0808 can retire and he can come out of hiding.
What say ya…..Erik Ainge? Hahahaha
Hey…He is the Outback Bowl MVP…Show some Respect!
What’s to hate? Bennet’s story is amazing. He believed in himself, kept fighting and getting better and achieved things on a legendary scale. He had nothing handed to him and earned it all.
You can despise the team and still respect the game and the players. Classy. Kudos.
Agreed, Hate Tebow, Weurfel and many others on the field, but I certainly respect what they did.
Respect
Good post truth. I hate the gators but respect and like Tebow for his college career and what he stands for.
Feel the same way about the Ol’ Bourbon coach, hate and mad respect
All Bennett needed was a chance and his coaches to believe in him.
As soon as they made him the starter, he won every game save one, was voted OMVP of 4 playoff games as well as an SEC Championship with another OMVP and back-to-back National Championships.
Stetson Bennett belongs on the Mount Rushmore of SEC Quarterbacks.
What a two-year run for Bennett, Georgia and Kirby’s program!
oh, man. you’re inviting an endless debate as to any potential consensus of a ‘mount rushmore’ accolade. i’d question whether you could even get a 90% agreement on two members.
If SBIV is not great, College Football should be very, very afraid next year.
Back-to-Back-to-Beck
I wasn’t a “hater,” but definitely a doubter. I was clamoring for JT Daniels to return ASAP last fall so we’d have a better chance down the stretch. Stetson proved me wrong 100% and I absolutely admit my take was freezing cold.
He may not be the most talented QB. But he earned MVP in two National Championship games. Can any of those “better” QBs say that?
Again, why isn’t he the “most talented’? IMO, he certainly is.
The guy just delivered a game ANY QB would die for and you still throw shade?! You don’t deserve a piece of the Natty pie they’re dishing out.
Not throwing shade. My point was we won more than pretty much any of the guys you can argue are better. Anybody else someone can name as more talented or skilled didn’t do what SBIV did.
Excellent team run by an excellent QB.
One simple sentence….
He won’t be a star in the pros.
Who cares? Most college QBs aren’t stars in the pros.
simple sentence from a simpleton
So dumb.
I certainly had times where I doubted Stetson. I was always proven wrong. SB has more than earned his spot on UGA’s Mount Rushmore of all-time greats.
Also, there are some vile losers in this comment section who think their sh*tty opinions about Stetson matter enough to be shared.
agree as to bennett’s place in uga history. i’m very intrigued to see what else he sets his sights on too.
Some of the NFL’s greatest quarterbacks are/were not physically gifted. Bart Star and Bob Griese come to mind. That said, I’m not sure how they would fare against today’s NFL DBs.
Stetson Bennett executed at a very high level during his last two seasons… his fifth and sixth as a college football player. You can respect his accomplishments but still admit that he enjoyed a completely unique situation.
While many college quarterbacks have been on great teams, Stetson is unique in being on great rosters AND being able to practice his craft for six years. Even Chris Weinke, another highly successful 25-year-old college quarterback, only played four years of college football.
So the objective question is, would Stafford and Murray (and dozens of other college quarterbacks, for that matter) have performed as well as Stetson in fifth and sixth seasons as college quarterbacks? Or, put another way, how did Stetson perform during his third and fourth seasons of college eligibility?
If you’re ranking college quarterbacks, these are reasonable questions.
it’s actually an easy question. they wouldn’t have fared as well. there’s been some comparison stats shared concerning the three and how they fared against top 25 teams, big games, etc. bennett was clearly in his own grouping.
there was even a comparison to mccarron…another recent sec qb to have won back to back titles with an elite roster of teammates. bennett’s performances in the big games overshadowed him too.
i get that you’re presenting the age angle, but i think a better gauge to compare is actual game experience…particularly in meaninful games. bennett actually started less than all of the qbs you noted, as well as mccarron, which i tossed in there.
Give it up already.
Hey now…don’t be coming into this comment section with fair and sound logic.
That doesn’t tend to go over very well.
Logic. Let me tell you how the “logic” has been on this site. Bennett is too small. Bennett has a noodle arm. Bennett is turnover prone. In fact, they bet he would have three turnovers in the SECCG. All that was the logic.
Now, since all that was wrong. The new logic is Bennett is only good because he is older.
Bennett’s arm strength seemed improved in the last two years. He was indeed turnover-prone against better pass rushes through 2020. He was very well protected — and didn’t face as much elite pass rush pressure — in 2021 and 2022.
He is athletic and gets the most out of his abilities. But yes, his ability to run the offense, see the field and make decisions has benefited immensely from his two extra years of eligibility.
Just opinions, not logic.
Nash, your angle seems one sided, yes? SB4 was also going against players that had extra years also…this point seems lost on many, including yourself.
When you see mee palley Cojones, please have him imagine how all this would have played out if the Jamie Newman saga had played out differently? Really happy for SB4 no matter how hard you try to undermine his accomplishments, go Dawgs!
No, not one-sided at all. Playing quarterback is one of the most difficult tasks in all of sports. It benefits far more from experience than any other position on the field.
Stetson executed at a very high level during his fifth and sixth years of college football, and was exposed to very little physical punishment during those years because of exceptional offensive lines.
Frankly, to my point, the same argument can be made about Kyle Trask during his fifth year (2020) of college football.
Stetson is a Georgia legend and nothing is going to change that. But the article begged comparison to “college” legends, and this is a section for people to express their opinions. The walk-on thing is a great story, but his 2021-2022 circumstances were very unique.
If it makes you feel any better, I believe Kirby has unambiguously established himself as the best currently active head coach in college football. Saban is still the GOAT, but Kirby is the best right now, today.
Not a Stetson hater, but I think most people don’t respect him as much as other QBs because he’s surrounded by so much talent. People are still waiting to see the first grass stain on his jersey. Last night cemented that sentiment for most. It looked too easy. I’ll give him credit for making his way on to the field and that was an impressive 4th quarter against OSU, but the OC and OL also get and deserve a lot of credit.
No, they disrespect him because he’s a walk-on and not a 5 star. I’ve talked to MANY UGA fans over the last two years, and that’s the number one complaint.
The number of stars a player has was never been a big concern of mine. Those evaluations don’t seem to include the intangibles that matter so much: heart, moxie, determination, and the will to win.
Interesting. There’s a poster above ridiculing people for discussing all that talent around Stetson – as in, no one is using that as a ding against him. And yet, here you are.
Maybe, just maybe, it looked so easy because Bennett, and the whole team, were performing at a very high level.
No doubt Monken deserves a HUGE amount of credit for coaching up Bennett and for one heck of a game plan.
It’s the same ding used against Greg McElroy, AJ McCrron, and Jake Coker. It’s none of their faults that their teams didn’t rely on them for putting up monster numbers in order to win.
That Bennett was respected by most UGA fans is a false narrative driven by journalist and a small, but vocal group of whiners.
obviously, I meant disrespected.
Can I get an AMEN!
Stetson has football acumen mentally that NFL teams like. He’ll get a chance, may never start, but you can make a career out of being a journeyman backup.
Best comparison I can make is Shane Matthews. Not necessarily the most gifted physical specimen, but had the football mind and won a bunch of games at UF, alot of folks forget Shane played in at least part of 14 NFL seasons. Not shabby.
Congrats to UGA and their fans. At least I was able to get my old @ss in bed at a reasonable time. Game was over long before it ended.
Can’t take anything away from Bennet, at least as far as last night is concerned. He’ll get invited to the combine, raise some eyebrows and be a career back-up much like Chase Daniel, McCoy, Hoyer, and Gabbert who have all had nice, long, profitable careers as such.
You do not have to like him but man he earned the respect. Well done! This dude is a world beater!
Incredible run. And SBlll deserves all the props coming his way. But anyone trying to make the argument that anyone other than Herschel is the greatest player in UGA history (as some have), is an idiot. And Connor almost went there.
Exactly. 34 is their GOAT. Period.
Gino Torretta was a GOAT for about a year. Can’t take that away from him but then the NFL happened. I’d imagine about the same for Bennett. He’ll be a decent back-up and could have a fine career doing that, which is just fine.
Articles like this, as well as the people in the comment section (looking at you bias-driven UGA fans), are just annoying.
Guys…it’s okay to acknowledge that he had a great college career and also admit that he’s not a GOAT in any form or fashion.
Is he a good college QB? Sure, but is he one of the best to ever do it or most talented? No, he’s not close.
Georgia had an astoundingly good football team over the last few years and he benefitted heavily from it, but so would any other good college QB; much less a great one.
There’s a reason that this guy isn’t high on NFL draft boards, and that is about as plain and simple as it gets.
A more fair argument may be as to whether or not he had an astounding college career, but that in no way means that he’s an astounding player or talent. He had a few of the best teams that college football has ever seen surrounding…a system that played to his strengths really well…and most importantly…a coaching staff that is one of the best that we have seen in quite some time in terms of developing talent and game-planning for opponents. You don’t just get to ignore those things.
None of this is hate, either; it’s just reality. Fun story and a great career, and if he can turn down the insufferableness a bit, he may have a decent career in television.
Fun stuff and congrats Dawgs on the most boring and predictable national title in over a decade.
I hear what you’re saying, but when Stetson left for JUCO, he led that team to a 10-2 record and played for the JUCO championship as well. It seems he wins wherever he goes? Also, in last years NC, when Bryce’s receiver went down he struggled and many said that if his great receiver(s) where playing then Bama wins … so, these things don’t square. You play the game in front of you and you either win or you don’t. Stetson seems to win.
Maybe someone could teach SB4 not to be so arrogant and cocky. No more mic drops…finger gun shooting and all the other theatrics.
That was his last game, you won’t have to worry about that anymore. For what it’s worth I don’t completely disagree with your point, however.
Why does that matter?
There will continue to be a lot of people believing he is too small for the pros – my answer is Chase Daniel. He is in his 13th professional year, never been the golden boy (starter), and has become extremely wealthy playing sparingly, and smart.
So Bryce Young is expected to go overall #1; Stetson may or may not be drafted.
Aside from that, I don’t see any difference in the two. About the same size, same speed, same stats. They’re practically the same player; it’s just bizarre.
it is truely an insult to all the great quarterbacks in all of history that played college football but not on a great team!
put Stetson Bennett on any other team in the country and what do you have? i don’t believe he is anywhere nearly humble enough in that he is not what won Georgia two natties in a row. he comes off as a total jerk!
you could have literally taken half the high school quarterbacks in the country and won natties with these Georgia teams.
