Season on the brink, is it time to pull the plug on John Calipari?
LEXINGTON, Ky. — After Kentucky’s 71-68 loss to South Carolina, the only happy noise in Rupp Arena was the Gamecocks team whooping triumphantly into the locker room after a wire-to-wire win over the Wildcats. Certainly there was plenty of other noise on this night, but it was a very different kind. The grumbling kind. The “things have got to change” kind. The firing kind.
Before the SEC co-opted the slogan, college basketball at the University of Kentucky could be said to just mean more. More than in the rest of the SEC, certainly. Maybe more than in all but a handful of blue-blood programs in NCAA basketball. Which is why since the last 5 minutes of a Final Four game against Wisconsin in 2015, John Calipari’s tenure in Lexington has grown increasingly complicated.
Before Frank Kaminsky and his Badgers stole the mojo of Kentucky’s perfect season, Calipari and Kentucky looked like a match made in hoops heaven. In 6 seasons in Lexington, Calipari had delivered 4 Final Four teams, and the school’s 8th NCAA title. Yes, there had been hiccups. Like the John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins-led 2010 team getting knocked out in the NCAA Elite Eight. Or the 2014 team losing to an incredibly ho-hum UConn team after managing to sneak into the national championship game. But those were minor problems.
But sometime around the final minutes of that 2015 NCAA semifinal, a switch flipped. Since 2015, Calipari has still put together some quality teams. The 2017 Wildcats lost in the final seconds to North Carolina in the Elite Eight. UNC went on to win the NCAA title. The 2019 Wildcats went to overtime in the Elite Eight before falling to (gulp) Auburn and Bruce Pearl. But lately, the issues have been more substantive than a little bad luck and coming up a basket short.
The 2021 Wildcats went 9-16, the worst mark since 1989. The 2022 squad looked to rebound from that awkward COVID campaign, but one lackluster game in the NCAA Round of 64 against No. 15 seed St. Peter’s undid most of the goodwill of a 26-7 campaign up to that point.
Which made this season feel a little more important. With Big Blue Nation staring down the barrel of the “lifetime” contract which Calipari inked with UK in June 2019, National Player of the Year Oscar Tshiebwe elected to return to Lexington rather than pursue the NBA. Kentucky rolled through a summertime basketball trip to the Bahamas, showcasing depth, scoring punch, and plenty of talent. The Wildcats opened the season ranked No. 4 in the nation. Calipari had returned in force to the recruiting trail, eventually locking down what will be the No. 1 ranked recruiting class in the nation for next season.
But a funny thing happened in a season that seemed scripted to be a return to form. Kentucky has looked more like the hamstrung, punchless team that lost to St. Peter’s last March than the nation’s No. 4 squad. Losing to Michigan State in double overtime wasn’t shocking. Getting drubbed by 16 by Gonzaga might have been. But losing by 14 at Missouri? Ugly. Getting drilled by 26 at Alabama? Even worse. Then came Tuesday’s clunker — with South Carolina ending the Wildcats’ 28-game home winning streak.
Kentucky has struggled early in seasons before under Calipari. But those struggling teams were generally stocked with freshmen who were visibly adjusting to big-time college basketball. It’s a little different when veteran players are standing still or regressing.
Tshiebwe has showed flashes of last year’s form, but also had games like the matchup with Alabama, when he finished with 4 points on 1-for-7 shooting. Sahvir Wheeler always hustles but is inconsistent as a scorer. Jacob Toppin is another player who can score 20 points or 2 points on any given night. And Kentucky finds itself in mid-January without a Quad-1 NCAA win and with plenty of work to do, even to survive in SEC play.
Tuesday night, the Wildcats fell behind 7-8 South Carolina by a 13-2 score and were audibly booed by a less-than-impressed (and less than capacity) Rupp Arena crowd. It didn’t get much better, as the Wildcats never led and fell to 1-3 with a shocking 71-68 loss.
Afterward, Calipari said if fans wanted to be mad, they should be mad at him. Some fans didn’t wait that long to voice their opinion.
That didn’t last very long. pic.twitter.com/AZMJ6juoSE

Kentucky has significant offense limitations. The Wildcats are visibly searching for a power forward. UK struggles to compete without Wheeler and Tshiebwe both on the floor. Both of Kentucky’s starting guards entered Tuesday shooting below 60% at the free throw line.
And the remedy for this problem, unlike teams that waited for the Harrison brothers or Brandon Knight or Julius Randle to grow up on the court, isn’t obvious.
There is little doubt that Calipari is increasingly becoming an abrasive presence for many members of the Big Blue Nation. Some of the very media savvy self-promotion that made Cal a good fit in Lexington can also grow tiring during a multi-season run without an NCAA Tournament victory. Calipari’s on-court inability to adjust to a perimeter-centric world has been a significant part of UK’s struggles. And for all the talk of tweaks and adjustments, Kentucky seems to be playing checkers while SEC compatriots like Alabama, Arkansas, and Tennessee have started playing chess. South Carolina hit 11 3-pointers on Tuesday. Kentucky made 3.
Is it time to pull the plug?
Let’s acknowledge the sobering truth.
No matter how awful the past 3 years of basketball under Calipari have been– and much of the time, they have been genuinely awful — the rest of the basketball world won’t see that. They’ll see UK’s fan base overreacting, expecting annual championships and running a Hall of Fame coach out of town.
While most Big Blue backers seem to expect that Jay Wright or Brad Stevens will come running, there would be some real hesitancy within the coaching fraternity to dive into the eternal hot seat in Lexington. Sure, Kentucky can throw plenty of money at the problem. Sure, there’s fan support and historical prestige. But coaches — more than most fans would like to believe — are friends. If Cal gets squeezed out, it will have ramifications in the ensuing coaching search.
And there is this: Remember that top-ranked recruiting class Calipari has coming to Lexington? DJ Wagner, Aaron Bradshaw and Justin Edwards (3 of the top 6 players in the class per 247sports.com) aren’t planning to head to Lexington to check out racehorses or bourbon. Those guys committed to Calipari, not to Kentucky. Fire Cal and be careful of whiplash from watching those guys race out the same door they strolled through.
Calipari probably has another year in Lexington, no matter how many awful losses the Wildcats stumble through this season. He’d be wise to steer clear of trying to reshape his program with transfers from Rhode Island, Illinois State, or Iowa. He’ll go back to what he came to Lexington to do — grab the best players in the country and help them grow up on the fly. Maybe that’ll work.
But on the other hand, can Kentucky afford another wasted season following off one that looks more likely to end in the NIT than in any sort of NCAA Tournament run? South Carolina basically had one highly-regarded player and a team full of guys who wouldn’t sniff playing time in Lexington. Didn’t exactly seem to matter in the end on Tuesday, particularly in the joyful visiting locker room.
Memories are short. Fans are fickle, particularly the kind who write big checks for new facilities and massive NIL donations. Kentucky’s position is untenable, and as hard as it was only a few years ago to imagine Kentucky basketball without John Calipari, it might soon be harder to imagine it continuing with him.
The remainder of this ugly season may well tell the tale. It definitely means more for Calipari, and Kentucky fans would welcome a happier type of noise.
I live in the area. Diehard UGA fan surrounded by Wildcats. The statements I’ve heard lately have been to this effect, “UK basketball hasn’t been relevant since 2015.”
I wonder if UK fans ask you when UGa basketball has been relevant
UGA has a basketball team?
Yes, they’re 11-4 and recently beat Auburn. You may have been distracted by the football team going back-to-back.
Amazingly, they have improved dramatically with FLORIDA’S former coach lol
You know UGA been to a Final 4, UT been?
You know UT won the SEC Tourney last year and Uga owns the historically worst record in SEC basketball history…
It has been 8773 Days since Tennessee last won an NCAA Football Title.
It has been #ERROR Since Tennessee made a Final 4
It has been #ERROR Since Tennessee won a College World Series
That was one of the better tournaments in my lifetime.
Hillbillies trolling the Dawgs on a Kentucky BB article. 1998.
Rednecks trolling the Vols on a Kentucky BB article. 1-17
It has been 8773 Days since Tennessee last won an NCAA Football Title.
It has been #ERROR Since Tennessee made a Final 4
It has been #ERROR Since Tennessee won a College World Series
You guys trying everything to get rid of 1980 aren’t ya. lol
It has been 8773 Days since Tennessee last won an NCAA Football Title.
It has been #ERROR Since Tennessee made a Final 4
It has been #ERROR Since Tennessee won a College World Series
And yet UGa is the worst men’s basketball program in SEC history
When I was a student at UGA they made it to the Final Four. The Vols ever make it to the Final Four?
Didn’t think so.
Still glad we don’t own the worst Mens Basketball team in SEC history.
“Still glad we don’t own the worst Mens Basketball team in SEC history.”
and neither does uga. but, you keep being you and post false statements in trying to lift up your own spirits.
1-17 last year in the SEC is the worst record in SEC history. Sorry to bother you…
Fans have short memories. Were pretty relevant in 2020 but the tournament was cancelled. Last year we boat raced the National champs at their gym, but had ankle and lisfranc injuries to our top guards at the worst time, and couldn’t get back to championship form.
To clarify: I don’t pay attention to college basketball for any team/school, but folks around me do. I don’t razz the UK folks; they talk down about their own team enough that I wouldn’t have to if I wanted.
I’m sure Vol fans would want a better product coming to Knoxville on Saturday, but this is all Kentucky can offer I guess. The team as a whole is just awful. They might win some one on one tournaments, but they are not a team. Cal is ultimately to blame, but his biggest liability is who he recruits. You’re now looking at what entitlement looks like in its worst form.
It’s interesting to see how the Saban’s and Calipari’s of sports are having to adapt. Kirby Smart and the coaches at Virginia and Houston seem to be masterful at getting the right kids into their programs.
Sorry, mixed football and basketball – same point, but confusing since I didn’t specify Houston and Virginia basketball.
UK fans knew what you meant. NIL definitely leveling the playing field.
This will probably be the worse KY loss in history to TN. A 30 point loss in 2013 I think is the previous worse basketball finish.
Wrong – we are enjoying your misery. Cats fans have obnoxiously lorded their success over the rest of us forEVER. Same with Bama fans (and now OOGLY fans too.)
I get it. It’s just where we are right now.
I’d like to know the basis for kicking out the guy with the sign. Wasnt anything offensive to anyone but coach Cal. Are we really at a point where fans get kicked out of games because they don’t like the coach?
Because the Karen’s of the sports world got upset.
True. Is it a little lacking in class? Sure. I’m still a fan of the for sale signs in the front yard. Cal lives on a main thoroughfare in Lexington leading into downtown. That would be a pretty funny morning commute.
Local news said this: Signs are limited to a certain size so as not to block the view of other patrons. Guy was asked repeatedly to keep the sign displayed in his lap, and not above his head where it blocked others’ lines of sight. He was then told he could forfeit the sign or leave. When he would do neither, he was escorted from premises and banned from future events.
Thanks. If that is the case then it is understandable. Not a good look though.
It’s a great look, the writing was on the wall after 9-16 then loss to St Peter. UK been going south and Cal is the captain. Will say the same about Saban, when a coach says it was a rebuilding year and it’s the same coach a program has had for a decade in any sport, it’s not good! You do not rebuild a program under the same coach after you hit bottom, 9-16 was bottom!
The problem is selective enforcement. If the sign was pro-Calipari or pro-Kentucky it likely would not have been an issue. Plenty of empty seats…just move over a bit.
Thanks for …”The rest of the story.” lol
The world we live in now AU
“is it time to pull the plug on John Calipari?”
UK can figure out it’s own problems.
I think Mark Stoops is having a bit of a giggle with this.
“Kentucky’s a basketball school” could not have been less timely. Hopefully Stoops is too busy worrying about his offensive line and recruiting to worry much about what’s happening to Cal, but human nature simply can’t avoid a moment of appreciation for this….
Huge buyout. He’s not going anywhere unless he wants to.
Kirby Smart’s comments about his team’s willingness to eat off the floor and avoiding entitlement/complacency to creep into the locker room seem to fit the moment for Kentucky basketball. It seems this team is so far removed from that and there does not seem to be any indication that the locker room can be turned around this year. And if nothing changes, the same will happen next season and so on… My gut tells me Cal sticks around through next season with the hopes that he can manage some type of deep run in the tournament with likely the most talented team he’s coached and then leave on his own terms. I just think he’s too stubborn/competitive/arrogant to walk away right now without being able to give Kentucky fans the redneck salute on his way out the door.
This right here. It also doesn’t help that his whole pitch is getting guys paid/to the league is now diminished due to NIL. Not enough attention around losing John Robic for Xs and Os.
It may not be all Calipari’s fault, the rest of the SEC is very talented. It is hard to dominate the way they once did. That said, he needs to inspire more and complain less.
Squarely on Cal. The game has changed and it’s not just the SEC that’s changed with it.
It’s really Cal’s arrogance and ego. He bemoans bad shooting and bad free throws but continues to run dribble drive kick outs instead of screens and ghost screen plays to open up shooters. Sure, players need to also hit open shots, but don’t say ‘you can blame me’ and then keep digging in. That arrogance and ego rubs off on the players instead of when he used to be hungry and a motivator.
Tough times for the ‘Cats! Time to pull plug on Calamari and Stoops.
Lifetime contract… yikes!
Cal yes. Stoops no. By the way Palmetto Pig is my favorite bbq in Columbia. Good eats there.
Calipari didn’t get stupid overnight, it’s the product on the floor that’s to blame. Sometimes players don’t develop into their potential, Calipari will be just fine with next years recruits coming in.
Getting to the top is not the hard part, STAYING at the top is.
For some programs, getting to the top IS the hard part.
Please give him a lifetime contract
Barnhardt would never give a lifetime contract. That would be insane, stupid and irresponsible. hold on, checking my notes….
Folks here in Austin think he’s all but a done deal for them. Their general opinion is, if we want him, he’s ours.
That’s because Austin is pretty entitled. Cats Fan in the Ville is right from above. Cal will stick around at least until next year so he can say I told you so to validate his ego. He’ll continue to dig in and give the same placating answers all while playing his same style of being amongst the lowest 3pt volume in the country. Meanwhile he’ll condescend the fans about cherry picked stats about a high 3pt shooting percentage.
By Austin, I mean UT.
He’ll be the toast of the town in Austin but basketball fans will learn to hate him.
UK will gift wrap Cal for them, this era has run its course. Cal lost focus of what basketball tradition is to UK and hijacked it for his own agenda and Barnhart gave him the keys to do it. By the way, where is lifetime Mitch? Time for him to go also! Clean house and start over! Cal had a nice run just like others before, but don’t get confused UK had 7 titles before Cal!
Pull the plug. More excuses same results
“Or the 2014 team losing to an incredibly ho-hum UConn team after managing to sneak into the national championship game.”
That team also beat UF who went undefeated in SEC play that year (including the tourney). To call that UConn team ho-hum is inaccurate. UF beat UK 3 times that year and UConn beat UF and UK in the final 4. I don’t understand why the SDS writers make stuff up to include as additional “evidence” in their stories. It’s just not true in this instance.
Yeah, agreed on that. UConn caught fire at the end of that season- ran through the Big East tournament and got even hotter in the NCAA’s… And it wasn’t like Florida or Kentucky played bad in the final four. Bad memory on the part of the author on that take.
This is why you never give someone a lifetime contract!!!! Cal is not a great coach and u can see it on the players face and the way they play. They have no confidence in their coach and would do better with a vibrant coach that actually has aggressive offensive and defensive schemes. Bama showed how to play and Tenn has a great style too. Ky is just so outdated and to be honest very boring to watch. It’s time for Cal to go and get KY relevant again! It’s not going to happen with Cal. He’s had many -#1 recruiting classes and has done nothing with them. If Saban did that he would be gone actually any coach for that matter. Love to see KY back in the spotlight for the right reasons. You all that support other SEC teams talking nonsense. Remember if I’m not mistaken KY, Florida and Arkansas are the only ones with a national title in the SEC. If KY can’t win the national championship I always support any SEC team cause I’m loyal to all the sec teams. SEC team s always the best in my eyes
Notice how the old man security guard was content to let the fan with the sign walk up the steps on his own until he held up the sign again at which point the old man high-stepped it up the steps to escort the fan out of the arena.
I was watching SEC network a few years ago and they interviewed Calapari. In describing his coaching methods he said if the players didn’t feel like working hard in practice, he was fine with that and just let the players reap the outcome of their lack of effort.
The irony with Cal is, he is the worst screamer and yeller of all time on the sidelines, supposedly holding the players ” accountable” thinking they respond to that to perform. Now a smattering of boos, empty seats and a sign and they guy is apoplectic about people yelling at him to hold him accountable and trying to “encourage” him to do better. He is reaping what he sowed here. I’ve been at games since 1975. Gave up my seats 4 years ago due to him and don’t miss it at all. I will NEVER give up my football seats though. Stoops is night and day next to Cal and for Cal, its lights out, exit stage left.
SEC basketball is really good right and Kentucky has not kept up. Let’s be honest and admit Cal has lost his recruiting touch and KY will be lucky to finish in the middle of the SEC standings. I hope fans wake up and stop attending games because empty seats will lead to Cal leaving one way or another.
2 SEC teams in the top 5 but all sds can write about is Kentucky…. predictable
Because, despite the present, we matter and UT doesn’t. Chokes ev very single year in NCAA with absolutely no tradition of championships or banners. Beat us this Saturdays for sure and you are still irrelevant in basketball. Now and forever
You hang NIT banners for crying out loud. Never have and never will hang a NCAA banner. Ever. Irrelevant. Always
Lol Blue Man. I don’t care who the write about as long as it’s about any other sec teams than the bottom dwelling cats. Write about Nate Oats and bama maybe
It’s big news whatever UK does in basketball, it comes with being a national blue blood program. Same with Bama and football, now with UGA winning back to back titles. Winning titles and having a winning tradition creates acknowledgment wide spread where it can’t be ignored. Then you have schools like UT who are “basically legends in their own mind”.
We drilled your ugly Vols with our “bottom” dwelling Cats. UT= Irrelevant. Like I said earlier. UT has no tradition and will always be our whipping boys.
Pressure to win all the time has taken the fun away from Kentucky. Kentucky has always recruited the best but they have not played as a team. SEC is such a tough league so give them time and things will get better. Then again talk is cheap and everyone wants to be a couch coach.
Does firing him make UK any better? I tend to think no. He would have no shortage of top-tier suitors scrambling to fire their head coach if he showed the slightest interest in their program. Maybe as a UGA fan I have a much lower standard than what UK expects.
LOL Kentucky basketball is not John Calipari. We’ve have 5 coaches who have won championships, which is 2 more than any other program. We can attract any number of coaches that can bring energy and a modern offensive philosophy and be better.
We’ve NEVER had a situation, outside of being on probation for 2 years in the late 80s, where we’ve missed 2 out of 3 NCAA Tournaments. So yes, Kentucky can do a lot better than that.
But is Calipari the problem? Because if he’s not the problem, it doesn’t matter who you bring in.
Again, just a UGA fan so I haven’t seen quality basketball in my lifetime.
Yes he’s the problem, offense is 2 decades outdated and has no spacing, bad shot selection, and in no way fits the current personnel (or even the last several years’ players). Every college basketball writer and NBA scout rips his offensive system endlessly. And he won’t adjust.
He’s lost this team as far as having positive relationships with the players it seems.
Uncharacteristically, he’s got a bad defense this year, and refuses to alter his strategy to shore any of that up. Maybe go to a zone? Never, ever.
A report today seems to have confirmed: he doesn’t have his staff do in depth scouting. It looks like when we play a game the other team has a strategy and a plan to exploit our weaknesses, while we just keep going out and doing the same stuff that doesn’t work over and over.
And worst for us, he’s lost the fans. He doesn’t seem to like us anymore, and we are pretty much tired of him.
There’s not really anything inherent about the program other than Cal that could be the problem. Facilities? Passionate fans? Top 15 at least talent this year? NIL money? Check, check, check, check.
Yeah sounds like a Calipari problem.
Did firing Crean make UGA better?
Yes but to be fair when you are at rock bottom, there’s no where else to go. Recruiting and player retention was an issue and at the level he was failing, you or I could have gone in there and replicated everything he did.
9-16 2 years ago, worst season in 100 years at UK.. Getting knocked out by a 15 seed last year.. losing record last 5 years against power 5 non conference opponents… example- Kirby hasn’t been to CFP in 4 years after this year, only 1 real good competitive team in this span, then drops the worst record in UGA history last 100 years, then gets beat by Vandy to keep UGA from going to CFP, then comes out next year and is preseason ranked top 5 and is getting beat by 20 by good teams, then loses at home against worst team in conference. To boot, Cal has never won back to back titles! Kirby also asks UGA fans to be patient!
Doesn’t UK always struggle until January and February? A byproduct of the 1-and-dones…
