Rapid Reaction: LSU dominates Purdue in short-handed Citrus Bowl wipeout
LSU was missing several key players.
It didn’t matter.
The Tigers still had more good players than Purdue, which suffered even more opt-outs than LSU did prior to the Citrus Bowl on Monday in Orlando, Fla.
The disparity in depth showed early and throughout as No. 17 LSU routed the Boilermakers (8-6) 63-7. The bowl point total matched the program record set by Joe Burrow and the 2019 national champions, who blasted Oklahoma 63-28 in the Peach Bowl Playoff semifinal.
The Tigers, who won the SEC West before losing to No. 1 Georgia 50-30 in the SEC Championship Game, finished 10-4 in head coach Brian Kelly’s first season.
Jayden Daniels looked the healthiest that he has been since suffering an ankle injury in the regular-season finale against Texas A&M and aggravating it against Georgia, and Garrett Nussmeier made good use of his time spelling Daniels. Nussmeier capped his day by throwing a 75-yard TD pass to Malik Nabers.
Both LSU lines dominated as Daniels, Noah Cain and John Emery Jr. took advantage of big holes to run through and the defense took advantage of a Purdue offense missing its starting quarterback, top wide receiver and top tight end.

Sports betting in Louisiana is officially live in the great state of Louisiana. Whether it is betting on who will win the SEC this year or the next New Orleans Saints football game... if you live in Louisiana, you can now do it from your mobile phone.
After scoring touchdowns on touchdowns on 5 consecutive first-half possessions, the Tigers added another on their opening drive of the third quarter as Nabers threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Daniels for a 42-0 lead.
So, yes, 3 LSU “quarterbacks” threw TD passes Monday. Four Tigers completed a pass.
The absence of several key Tigers due to opt-outs and the transfer portal created opportunities for seldom-used players in some areas, but the offense leaned on familiar names to take control early.
After both teams punted on their first possession, Daniels went to work. He threw a 19-yard completion to Mason Taylor and added completions of 12 and 14 yards to Nabers and had a pair of 6-yard runs.
The Tigers mixed in the run game with others as well, Cain gaining 2 yards on 2 runs and Emery gaining 5, 3 and 1 yard with the last one producing a touchdown.
Nussmeier replaced Daniels on the next possession and overcame a pair of incompletions with completions of 2 yards to Cain, 14 to Nabers, 6 to Brian Thomas Jr. and 17 to Taylor.
Cain took over for Emery and had a 14-yard run before his 9-yard touchdown run extended the lead to 14-0, which stood at the end of the first quarter.
Daniels returned on the next possession and LSU rode the passing game almost exclusively to keep rolling. Emery gained 6 yards on the only run of the drive and Daniels had completions of 3 yards to Emery, 4 and 17 to Nabers and 32 to Taylor for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead 4 plays into the second quarter.
LSU’s win probability never dipped below 99% from that point on.
On the next possession Daniels threw 2 completions for a total of 19 yards and ran 37 yards to set up Cain’s 9-yard touchdown run and a 28-0 lead.
The Boilermakers had their best possession of the first half when they drove to a first down at the Tigers 30, but Jarrick Bernard-Converse intercepted Austin Burton at the 2.
That was followed by LSU’s last and longest touchdown drive of the first half – an 87-yarder on which all the yards came through the air.
Nussmeier threw a 5-yard completion to Taylor, and 12-yarder to Kyren Lacy and a 15-yarder to Nabers. Then Nabers threw a 45-yarder to Lacy before Nussmeier tossed a 10-yarder to Thomas for a touchdown and a 35-0 halftime lead.
Wow. That’s all I can say. Wow. LSU playing like a team POSSESSED. Congrats to the Tigers on one of the most impressive bowl dominations I’ve ever seen!
Pretty sure this makes the SEC 6-5 in bowls. Good stuff, LSU, that was some scary good execution.
Congrats to State. Nice win.
That was a crazy finish for the M St game! Way to go St!
Folks forget that LSU put up 500 yards of passing on UGA and never gave up in that game. Brian Kelly has done a tremendous job in Baton Rouge this year. The future sure looks bright for LSU.
Like taking candy from a baby. Geaux Tigers! And Roll Wave!
Geaux Green Wave, 46-45 final
Yeah, that was beautiful.
LOVE that the green wave took care of the trojans.
Now that Cotton Bowl win by Tulane was a very satisfying bowl game…….especially after all the hype we heard about USC from the media.
As a Tennessee fan, I loved every minute of that. Give it to ’em.
Impressive win tigers! Congrats on doing what we failed to do last season LOL
Poor B1G.
USC just lost to Tulane.
Tulane would have have put up more of a fight against LSU than the B1G.
Lincoln Riley can’t even make it work against former SEC schools.
Impressive win. That was the best bowl-prepared Tiger team I’ve seen in a long time. Congrats to the players, coaches and analysts on a completely “aligned” game.
Hey, 2019 was not that long ago!
True, but it feels like it lol
Been a roller coaster ride at LSU to be sure since 2019, but I think they’re on the right track know with Brian Kelly at the helm.
Dominant performance. The QBs looked sharp and the WR group showed why they are top 1 or 2 in the nation along with OSU.
Big decision ahead on the QB that starts next yr. Either JD or Nuss is gone. I favor Nuss as he’s a better passer but if JD improves on reading defs and being decisive with the ball I’d be ok with him as well. I guess it’s a good problem to have.
Let them share the snaps. Use them as situational QBs. There doesn’t seem to be any big drop off of production between the two.
It could work but the concern is you split your locker room with guys taking sides. Then there’s us fans who have our own strong opinions on either guy. Lol
It’s possible that Nuss will stick around and wait until 2024. Looking at Howard today, it looks like he’s not ready. I know it would be bucking the tendency among QBs these days, but is it possible these guys would sit and wait their turn?
I hope you’re right. But Nuss had a front row seat to what happened to Brennan regarding sitting and waiting your turn. Walker is a higher rated QB than both JD and Nuss. Sure, right now today Nuss is ahead of Walker development wise, will that be the case as Walker gets more time in the system? Talent could get him ahead of Nuss. These are great problems to have. I just want the one that gives the Tigers the best chance to win big. I’ll let the coaches lose sleep over it. Lol
Impressive win, Tigers. Dominating!
Isn’t Purdue’s former coach, the one who developed this team, now going to be UofL’s coach? Wonder how Card fans are feeling about their prospects now.
Congrats on a very decisive win!
Purdue needs to pass if they get a bowl game and it’s against the SEC. Auburn beats them by 40 something a few years back. Not worth looking up but I’m thinking another SEC team hung 40 on them in the last 10 years.
Did Purdue KNOW they were playing in a bowl game today! What a beatdown! Geaux Tigers!
LSU sure did.
Geaux wrong Tigers. Impressive.
I expected LSU to win big but not that big. I think Purdue offense relied heavily on Charlie Jones. Did he even play?
Not a good resume builder for Purdue interim HC!
Congrats Tigahs. I guess #7 was replaceable.
SEC has done well in the marquee bowls but not so much for the lower tier games.
I honestly believe as I said before. That LSU should absolutely be favored to win the west again in 2023!!! I do not believe it was any fluke this time either!!! I believe the LSU record would have been waaaaay more impressive if it wasn’t Brian Kelly’s first season!!!!! Heck Kirby was 8-5 in his first season!!!
Alabama has another elite class coming in, but unless something happens. They lose Bryce Young, Will Anderson and Gibbs as well!!! I’m pretty sure they will have a few more that will declare!!! Counting A Hall and Billingsly alone from last season. Along with Bryce Young, Will Anderson and Gibbs. Then I believe 19 other high level transfers including 5 stars and even starters!!!
To my count that is 24 high level starters, 5 stars and blue chip RECRUITS and BIG-TIME STARTERS that will be missing. On top of your usual yearly turnover!!!!! It’s like losing a top 5 to 7 recruiting class that would normally be there developing with this top class and now they won’t be!!!!! It’s actually a bit worse that what is happening at A&M right now!!!! Milroe just didn’t inspire me. Now I’m not saying he can’t develop to be a good solid QB, because he can!!!
It’s just that Bryce Young is waaaaaaaay more than a good solid QB! Alabama has had the BEST at QB and receiver! And if Milroe is the plan. I’m afraid Alabama fans will be disappointed badly!!! Because yes they lost 2 games each of the last 2 seasons, but……
They were nearly carbon copy years except for GETTING PROGRESSIVELY WORSE!!!! Both years they SHOULD HAVE LOST 3 GAMES MINIMUM!!! Auburn beat themselves last season by not staying IN BOUNDS!!! And this season the OFFICIALS just simply did not call a VERY CLEAR SAFETY VS TEXAS!!!! That call or that tiny chip-shot field goal Texas shanked would have beaten Alabama!!!! They could have easily lost to A&M or Ole miss as well!!!!
OTHER THAN THEIR 2 LOSSES. I’M PRETTY CERTAIN THE COMMITTEE ALSO CONSIDERED THESE FACTS AS WELL. I BELIEVE THE #5 RANKING THEY WERE ” GIFTED, ” WAS WAY TOO HIGH!!!!! I BELIEVE IT WAS THE COMMITTEE’S WAY OF ATTEMPTING TO SATISFY SABAN!!!!!!
While I am happy Alabama won the sugar bowl. I still call it as I see it. If any 2 loss team should have been considered. It should have been TENNESSEE!!!!! Because even though they lost to south Carolina. THEY STILL BEAT ALABAMA AND THE OTHER TEAM THAT BEAT ALABAMA, NAMELY LSU!!! TENNESSEE ALSO PLAYED A WAAAAAY TOUGHER SCHEDULE THAN ALABAMA!!!!!
So Alabama fans and NICK SABAN himself, should be the first to admit. That if anyone was robbed of a playoff spot with 2 losses. IT WAS TENNESSEE, NOT ALABAMA PERIOD!!!!! Still I don’t see him admitting it. Because he is SICK!!!! He has been respected a little too much, to the point of mental IDOLATRY nearly!!!! As Jimbo said, he kinda does have a god complex!!!!!
With Hooker injured I can understand the committee not putting Tennessee in, but I can’t justify Alabama above them at #5!!!! Yea, Tennessee lost badly twice! Alabama did have all close losses, but as I said. Alabama should have 3 losses!!! And regardless Alabama did lose to both LSU AND TENNESSEE!!!! It so happens that Tennessee beat Alabama and the SEC WEST CHAMPIONS LSU!!!!
AT THE END OF THE DAY. A LOSS IS A LOSS AND TENNESSEE BEAT ALABAMA!!!!!!
PS. LSU LOOKED AWESOME AND THIS POST IS TOO LONG!!!! LOL

Based on the results from the two games Saturday, I think the committee had it exactly right.
Congrats on the dominant win!
Great win LSU. This has been a great weekend all around for the SEC and a bad weekend for the BIG and their two new members ( USC and UCLA). My “expert” analysis is the top of the SEC really played well and up to potential. Florida, Kentucky, Ole Miss were disappointing. Happy New Year everyone.
Florida disappointing??? Try Florida embarrassing and then throw that wannabe coach out. Maybe he can go to a food stamp program and write beg letters for them
If we win next year, will you post just as much as now? Just wondering…
Largest margin of victory in a bowl in program history. Well done, Tigers! Way to represent the conference!
Okay, Bowl season is over. We can get back to hating one another now!
Eh Ive never hated on Bama, well I have slightly but not like some other teams we play. 90% of the time we play its a good one
It’s not real hate. I don’t wish bad things on the LSU program or fan base. I used to be so wrapped up in Bama that I would throw up before every game. I ended up in the ER with chest pain after Bama lost to UCF on homecoming. I realized that it was ridiculous. Now it’s all in good fun. I still want Bama to win but have a much better perspective about it. Seriously, congratulations on a great season and a dominating bowl win.
Other fans love to bash the SEC on their bowl record but the SEC loses more players due to opt outs because they have more NFL prospects. They often play teams that don’t have many or no opt outs and are more motivated. This game was between two teams with a bunch of opt outs and it showed how much deeper LSU is.
Agree.
It would not surprise me if Saban retires. Just a feeling…probably wrong but just a gut feeling.
Is hope a feeling?
According to SEC Shorts, Hope is woman… and a good looking one at that.
Nicely done.
My wife says “Yes”.
I like it.
Hey billy…..you paying attention??
This is what REAL football coaches do
Notice he didn’t go writing pity me letters to fans begging them to have patience??
You get that whiny man ??
Real coaches stand up and get to work while wannabes sit around writing letters and doing nothing.
Three years dude….three years and you’re gone and that can be said because of your actions to date. Losing to teams you got no business losing too and supporting a you win some you lose some quarterback joke.
Congratulations to LSU, Miss State, and Tulane!!
It’d be great if CBK let’s Daniels and Nuss switch up in 2023.
Geaux Tigers!! Thanks for spanking those B1G butts! Loved it!
Congratulations Tigers! It will be fun to watch how the west plays out next season.
Hope our team was watching this methodical demolition. THIS is how it’s done. May not have been the bowl you hoped for, but you dominate the one you’re in. Congrats to the Tigers, and for that matter, the Crimson Tide, Vols and State. Well done.
Purdue almost lost by more points to LSU than their entire total combined loss margin for the season leading up to that game.
About like UGA DOMINATING Vandy.
That’s what it felt like. Shows how bad the Big10 West is if they made it to their conference championship
Congratulations LSU!! Great game, we got to go in person. We loved it when the defensive guys and the Cheez-it mascot celebrated and piled on after one of the interceptions. :D
And the Big 10 will be just as overrated in 2023-4
It was the most impressive ever until Georgia beat TCU in the national championship 65-7!!!!!! Which is now officially the most dominant national championship win or bowl win in HISTORY!!!!
PS. ITS OFFICIAL!!!!!!
