Darius Miles’ attorney releases statement following 'tragedy,' murder arrest
Darius Miles’ attorney has released a statement about the former Alabama basketball player’s involvement in what was described as a “tragedy.”
Miles is being represented by William White of Boles Holmes White LLC out of Birmingham.
Tuscaloosa Police Capt. Jack Kennedy said that the shooting happened early Sunday morning in the Strip in Tuscaloosa. He said Jamea Harris, 23, of the Birmingham area was shot and killed.
Miles, 21, from Washington, D.C. who was kicked off the team following the incident, and Michael Lynn Davis, 20, of Charles County, Maryland, were both charged with capital murder.
“At this time, it appears that the only motive was a minor altercation that these individuals had with the victim as they were out on The Strip,” Kennedy said in a news conference Sunday evening. They didn’t have a previous relationship, he said.
Miles’ attorney released this statement:
“Darius Miles and his family are heartbroken tonight over the death of Jamea Jonae Harris. While Darius has been accused of being involved with this tragedy, he maintains his innocence and looks forward to his day in court. Our firm’s own investigation is ongoing, and no further statement will be made at this time.”

This is such a tragic event. Just heard on the radio the deceased has a 4 year old child, and was just in Tuscaloosa to visit with friends who attend the university.
That is very tragic and is hopefully considered by the justice system. It’s also very preventable. Had she stayed home caring for her child and chosen better company, she’d be alive right now.
She’s 23 and well within her right to go out and have a good time without worrying about getting shot. Because you have a child doesn’t mean you are chained to the house.
We don’t have a right to be safe. We should have a privilege but we don’t. Stay home with your kids in the early morning hours and they won’t wake up without a parent. I’m sure this was her first time out partying though.
That is completely unfair oskie. She was on the strip in t-town. Not somewhere notorious for anything like what happened to her.
She was shot at approximately 1:45 am. While we should live in a world where we can safely enjoy the early morning hours, there’s an inherent risk in doing so. We don’t live in Main Street USA Disneyworld though. If she didn’t associate with folks who get in fights at 1:45 am and was at home, she’d be here.
What a dumb post Oskie. Like parents should never leave their house.
No where did I say parents should never leave their children. I’m happy to discuss if you can make an argument in good faith that isn’t a strawman fallacy
I read your comment. Own it.
I can’t help your lack of reading comprehension
Oskie is correct on one important point. It is not the fact that she was out at 1:45 that got her killed. It was the company she was keeping.
It has been a while since my kids were students but I can recall walking through the strip late at night and realizing the difference between students just out for a good time and those who appeared to be spoiling for a fight.
Most people never got into a fight if they were not inclined to do so. But it would be awfully easy to get in one if so inclined.
This is a murder. There is zero justification. Dude gets to wake up looking at other dudes for the best years of his life. No sympathy
Unfortunately he gets to wake up only looking at dudes. If again if, found guilty they need to be hanged
He better quit that crying, you want to tote a gun and act like a thug, bc 20 something’s packing “out on the strip” are thugs. He going into the big house and I don’t mean Ann Arbor and that crying, well I’ve seen movies. If he is guilty of course.
Everybody’s tough until they get the cuffs
Well, I believe only one person pulled the trigger. How are two guys charged with the same crime.
Alabama law
It is quite common in most states to charge everyone involved in a crime with murder if someone dies during the commission of a crime. Let the facts play out and we will eventually find out if he pulled the trigger, hit someone or just happened to be there when the other guy committed the crime. It is like that in other states not just Alabama.
Everyone in a vehicle that shots are fired from and kills someone is charged with Capital Murder. Doesn’t matter who fired the gun. Since Miles apparently did not fire the gun, it is very possible that his charges will be reduced after a complete investigation is finished. The fact that is was his gun doesn’t help him.
