John Calipari tries to explain loss to South Carolina, sends message to fans
John Calipari lamented Kentucky’s loss to South Carolina on Tuesday night, which snapped a 28-game winning streak in Rupp Arena.
South Carolina won 71-68 after it came in as a 19.5-point underdog, and had lost 85-42 at home to Tennessee on Saturday.
“I imagine our fans are mad, I expect them to be, we lost at home,” Calipari said, and added that he has to figure out the issues that led to the loss. … Going nuts on people is not the answer. Now can I be tougher on them in practice? Yeah I can. I just look at things today and say, ‘We’re better than that.”
“Fans should be mad (after this game),” he said. “We don’t lose at home. … I’m just asking you now to be with these kids. They need you now. Stick with these kids. If you want to get on me, that’s fine. I’m the coach.”
Calipari identified one problem.
“I thought we would be a helluva defensive team, and we’ve got to shore that up, because that’s the basis of what we do,” he said. ”
Calipari also explained that Cason Wallace had back spasms, and Jacob Toppin suffered a right shoulder injury.
H/T Ryan Black.
His starting lineup guaranteed this start to the game.
Sad…. Yall not even worth making fun of anymore
Great thing about your comment is that it comes from a UT fan, in UT’s basketball history UT has been to 1 elite 8, no final 4’s, more less even sniffing a championship, ever! Never in the building or even at is doorstep! 1 elite 8 in school history!!! If you were a UNC, Duke, or KU fan it would make sense and be fairly appropriate, but a UT fan commenting on mens basketball, so far out of your lane. Let’s break this down, UT 1 elite 8 vs UK 38 elite 8’s(had to go plural, UT hasn’t reached that phase), that’s 14 more times than UT has even made the tourney! You brought up sad… here is real example.
Yeah and I remember when gas was 10 cents a gallon and milk was a nickel. Don’t worry daddy will spank that behind this weekend.
Don’t be pushing that East Tennessee subculture weirdo stuff on everyone. Seems like every sarcastic comment involves a family member doing something to another family member. I guess it’s new times, y’all used to keep that stuff behind closed doors.
Yeah, and how many of those elite 8s did UK buy and then spend a few years on probation? UK has a great basketball tradition, but that does not mean you don’t $uck this season. So, try breaking it down for me as to why the UK basketball past has anything to do with this season and why it keeps you from $ucking this season.
If you don’t think tradition and that a championship culture matters to a program every season, then you aren’t a Tide fan.
From your logic, Bama is the 4th rated football program in the SEC behind UGA, LSU, and UT? You know, since the past doesn’t count for anything, right?
UT has no basketball history nor will they EVER have a national championship! That being said. Ky needs to move on from Cal and get a vibrant coach that actually has offensive and defensive schemes that work. Bama showed what modern offense and defense can do. This KY is done! They have zero confidence and zero confidence in their coach! Cal can’t coach I’ve been saying this for 5 years now. He is a great recruiter though.
UT’s basketball history has nothing to do with whether UK $ucks this season. All it does is give some UK fans something to come back with to deflect attention from their terrible season and the downward trajectory of the last couple of seasons. The only problem is that it doesn’t work and makes the UK fans that do it look like idiots.
No UK fans are deflecting from how bad this season has been, let alone the downward trajectory of Cal.
Did you even read the post I responded to? Where did it refer to this season? It was a negative comment in general, so responded back about UT’s “1 elite 8 appearance”. So maybe that triggered a Bama fan since they also only have “1 elite 8 appearance”?? Bama taking UT leftovers, that’s a first!
TN chokes every tournament and I mean every tournament. Funny how a Tenn fan talks smack when they have zero history in basketball worth noting
Uh atlas who won the sec tourney last? I get it. You should be mad. Ky losing in basketball is akin to bama losing in football. Everyone wants to beat ky and see them lose. It’s just the reality of being tge long time 800 pound gorilla of the conference that is used to walking over most everyone in the sec. We will be looking forward to seeing Ky in TB arena Saturday but they r still a team with a lot of talent and if they put it together can beat anyone. Should be fun.
Good job of trying to deflect from previous UT fan comment by responding to “atlas”, the only problem is it was UT who poked the bear and you can’t delete the original posters comment. UT won something in basketball last year, and that’s a big deal for UT basketball since it has only happened 5 times in UT history, we get it! Considering UK has won the SEC tournament 31 times the relevance of UT’s 5th can only be timely, we get that too. As far as basketball, UT fans need to stay in their lane, bc there absolutely no history past or present that suggests you know or experienced anything dealing with championship level basketball period. Hang that 1 elite 8 banner in good place! Pick your spots better next time and it won’t be so obvious as 8 titles to 0!
Ok little brother calm down. I’m sure we won’t beat you as bad as we did in football. Maybe
And you ain’t no bear
And that has what to do with how bad UK is playing right now? So, you are saying that because UK has a long history of sucking at football, they cannot recognize when other teams also suck?
UK Football doesn’t hang the equivalent of NIT banners.
Maybe Cal going to Texas wouldn’t be a bad thing for either party. UK can go after some new blood like Holtmann or Drew.
Cal can’t leave until the NCAA starts some sort of investigation. That’s his shtick.
Even if Texas was willing to pay Calimari enough to make the move, it would be a major step down. I just don’t see him leaving UK unless forced to.
I don’t see him leaving unless he’s forced to either, but any job that is NOT considered a step down i.e. UNC, Duke, Kansas, ect is not ever going to hire Calipari. Texas has a ton of talent, a Top 10 team who needs a coach, and easy to recruit to, it’s a dam good job.
There is no program that is not a step down. UK is the top of the food chain but Calipari is doing everything possible to ruin the legacy.
I’ve moved past anger, unfortunately. I’m more and more finding myself drifting towards apathy.
Hmmmmm….
Denial, Anger, Bargaining….you’re at Bargaining. Strap in, however, Depression sets in next before Acceptance.
When Mizzou walloped KY by 26 or whatever I honestly thought that was just a perfect storm if you will. Mizzou was probably not THAT good and KY was probably not THAT bad. KY might be losing confidence, losing morale due to getting knocked around and spiraling down toward actually being THAT bad. They’re not a great team, but sometimes it only takes one big win for a good team to get back on track and regain the desire to play harder.
