High upside LSU QB announces he will enter transfer portal
LSU is losing one of its quarterbacks, as Walker Howard has decided to enter the transfer portal.
Howard was a decorated 2022 recruit but will look for a quicker path to playing time elsewhere.
It was unlikely that he would have had much of a shot at seeing the field in 2023 with Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier returning.
QB Walker Howard @Walker_Howard4 departs #LSU after one season.

Howard was rated by the 247Sports Composite as the 5th-best quarterback in the 2022 class and the No. 40 overall prospect.
The 6-1, 195-pounder chose the Tigers over Florida and also had offers from the likes of Alabama, Arkansas, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M, among several others.
LSU finished 10-4 in Brian Kelly’s 1st season in Baton Rouge. The Tigers won the SEC West and whipped Purdue in the Citrus Bowl, 63-7.

Louisiana online sports betting is officially live in much of the state. Louisiana joined the handful of other SEC football states with legalized sports betting in January 2022.
Hate to see him go. Huge upside. I thought it might be Nuss. This must mean Nuss is staying. That’s at least some good news. I wish almost all the best for Howard as I obviously won’t be pulling for him if he goes up against LSU.
Don’t know much about Howard other than how highly touted he was during recruiting but if I were a Tigah fan I would think that is great news that it wasn’t Garrett, I think Nussmeier is going to be a stud…screams Joe Burrow’esque to me. Kid see’s the field well already.
He’s a gunslinger. His time will come, and I think he going to be ready. If he goes, we are in trouble.
I tend to agree. From what I’ve seen, Nussmeier looks better than Howard. The question is, can we keep him?
Florida could use a good QB!!!!! There now gator nation. Don’t say I never did anything for you!!!! That’s the up side!!!! LOL
The down side. Georgia still plays in the east. Could potentially be as good or better next season and they are zeroed in on even more history. As we go for the 3peat!!!!
The really bad news. I predict GEORGIA WILL 3PEAT!!!! I predicted the first 2 long before the 2017 season. I predicted a 3peat if we had a repeat!!!!!!
PS. People betting my predictions have really cleaned up!!!!!!
Go for 3 in 2023 Georgia!!!!!!

Oh noo! I think the only 2 of the 3 QBs we could have kept was JD and Howard. Nuss staying to compete with JD pushed Howard out. If Nuss loses out to JD I think he leaves too. Hope I’m wrong and Nuss is in for the long run.
I don’t think Howard would have left if he thought that. I think Nuss staying is why he left. He knew he had two more years as third string. I thought Nuss was the most likely to go. I’m fairly confident that he’s staying now.
I hope you’re right, but this does not look good. If Nuss leaves, we’re stuck with Collins in 2024.
We would have to go to the portal again.
Nobleman…….People tend to fall in love with running QBs. But Nuss is the best QB LSU has!!!!! Jaden Daniels did nothing against Georgia but Nuss made it respectable!!!!

Looks like Florida might get a decent QB after all.
Stricklan will find a way to screw it up.
Or Auburn.
Or TCU.
This really makes me sad. The receivers say he had the best arm of any of the 3 QBs. He was by far the best QB in Louisiana his senior year in high school. His dad also was a QB at LSU.
What receivers said that? He was mainly throwing to the scout team.
You don’t think third stringers get real reps in spring ball?
When Daniels missed practices due to injury, Walker probably moved up to the #2 spot and got some quality reps.
^
And I’m supposed to think that those receivers said Howard had the best arm? I’m not buying that, at all.
Ok. Entitled to your opinion. But your reasoning was stupid.
He threw to any receiver that would catch balls, 1s included. He threw all spring and summer to the receivers. He threw before during and after practice. Surely you don’t think the only time he throws a football is during practice.
And, I don’t care what you believe.
Yet, you said the receivers said it, but you didn’t name a single one. Not credible.

I could see that. Maybe MSU or Arkansas? I think is pretty thin after KJ. Maybe they convince him to come back up one year then its yours.
I think he may wind up reuniting with his former high school and Tiger teammate Jack Besh now at TCU. Sorry to lose him but the completion level in the Big 12 may be more appealing than the gauntlet in the SEC.
WRONG
Feels pretty late to be transferring for a walk in starting role. He is going to have to compete wherever he goes.
What? A top 50 player leaving this soon? He enrolled exactly one year ago yesterday. I don’t understand it. Best of luck to him.
I don’t know anything about the young man or LSU’s QB situation, but I sure did like the last sentence of the story: ‘The Tigers won the SEC West and whipped Purdue in the Citrus Bowl, 63-7.’
At the end of the day, the Tigers will be good at QB and I hope that young man finds a place where he is willing to really dig in and earn the starting position… even if he has to wait a couple of years.
It will be interesting to see who enters the transfer portal in the May window after spring football…Daniels or Nuss possibly based upon who is the presumed starter next year.
Jayden Daniels was always the double edged sword for LSU…smooths over concerns about the offensive line in 2022, but might muck up the future LSU QB succession by staying in 2023.
That’s odd logic. If he stays, we have the starter for 23 in Daniels and Nuss in 24. I’ll gladly accept that.
Do you really think either Nuss or Daniels wants to sit for the 2023 season?
Nuss has already been told that Daniels is the starter next season as Kelly announced that publicly. If he was going to transfer, he should have done it already so he could be enrolled for the spring semester. If Nuss was leaving, I think Howard would have stayed. Anything can still happen, but as of now, it looks like both are staying.
Glad Howard exited asap. Prolly go TCU w his prior HS teammate. LSU was always a bad choice since his Dad had an up & down career there. The name congers up the terrible AU pick 6 game under Curly puke Hallmann Good luck and much success outside the Sec W.
You’re the only LSU fan happy that he’s leaving. He has huge upside. We will miss him before all is said and done.
WRONG
Giving up Howard made the most sense in the long run. Nuss needs to be the backup next season cause we may need it with happy feet Daniels back there. Kelly knows it and chose Nuss over Howard.
Howard may have a bigger upside than Nuss (or he may not), but Howard has to a longer way to go to realize his than Nuss does. If all goes according to plan, Nuss starts 2 years after JD leaves giving us stability at QB for the next 3 years.
Now, Kelly’s challenge is finding someone to succeed Nuss in 3 years cause I doubt R. Collins sticks around. That general qb situation is going to be the name of the recruiting game for most teams moving forward.
