SDS Mailbag: Best TV show set in an SEC town, most disappointing men’s hoops team, Lane Kiffin QB carousel
We’ve got a busy week in the SDS Mailbag, folks!
Let’s go ahead and dive right into your questions for this week:
Robert:
Last week, I asked what band formed in an SEC town was the best. This week, what TV show set in (or involving) an SEC town is the best?
Last week you got me in trouble. I didn’t realize so many people consider REM the greatest band ever formed. Silly me.
Oh well, let’s try it again. Here were some options that Robert laid out to me:
- Justified (Lexington)
- The Queen’s Gambit (Lexington)
- Ozark (Columbia, Missouri)
- The Walking Dead (Atlanta area/Athens-ish)
- Dukes of Hazzard (Atlanta area/Athens-ish)
- The Riches (Baton Rouge)
- Swamp People (Baton Rouge)
- True Detective Season 3 (Fayetteville)
If we were talking True Detective Season 1, I might be swayed. That season was set in Louisiana, but it was closer to Lafayette than Baton Rouge.
My favorite of the above options is The Walking Dead. I loved the first few seasons of that show, though the final few have dragged on a bit.
I honestly had no idea The Queen’s Gambit was set in Lexington. That’s pretty cool. My wife loved that show, and it got plenty of accolades. That’s perhaps the most popular show set in an SEC town, but I’m still going with The Walking Dead as my personal answer.
Tom:
Which SEC men’s basketball team has disappointed you the most so far?
It has to be Arkansas for me. I am a big fan of Eric Musselman and the job he’s done with the Hogs. His NCAA Tournament résumé speaks for itself.
I’m not pushing the panic button yet, as the Hogs started slowly last SEC season and we saw how that ended up when all was said and done.
But this year’s team is making too many mistakes and losing its cool way too often. Falling apart in the second half at Vanderbilt last weekend was inexcusable.
Now the Hogs basically face must-win SEC games in their next 4 league matchups – vs. Ole Miss, vs. LSU, vs. Texas A&M and at South Carolina. Those are 4 winnable games (even against the Aggies, who are currently 5-0 in SEC play), with 3 of them at home.
Go 4-0 there and I’ll start believing again. But the Hogs can’t afford to fall any further behind in the SEC standings.
Ryan:
What is Lane Kiffin doing with Ole Miss’s QB room?
I trust Lane Kiffin’s judgment when it comes to all things offense. If he’s adding Spencer Sanders to the mix, he probably feels as if he’s maxed out Jaxson Dart’s potential.
To me, the Walker Howard addition was a move for 2024 and 2025. Sanders is a move for 2023. I don’t expect Dart to still be on the Ole Miss roster in Week 1. But hey, maybe the added competition will bring out the best in Dart and it’ll be Sanders on another team for the start of the season.
Everybody complains that college football is becoming more like the NFL. Well, this is a very NFL move from Kiffin. He wants to find the best quarterback for his team, no matter whose feelings get hurt in the process. I respect that.
The Dart situation reminds me of the Daniel Jones situation with the New York Giants. People are saying the Giants “have to” re-sign Jones now that he’s led the team to the second round of the playoffs.
Why?
If a better option presents itself, the Giants would be stupid not to explore it. Same with Kiffin and Ole Miss.
@Dobbe8:
Would you rather have your favorite college team make the College Football Playoff 2 years in row and fail to advance to the title game (like Michigan) or have it win 2 straight New Year’s 6 bowl games?
Well, my favorite college team is obviously Mizzou, so I have plenty of time to think about this question while the Tigers work their way into CFP contention.
The Tigers won the Cotton Bowl before it was a New Year’s 6 bowl game (kicking Arkansas’s butt, I feel the need to mention). Other than that, no NY6 games in my lifetime. So picking the NY6 options is tempting, but I can’t do it.
Making the Playoff (in its current iteration of 4 teams) is like making the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament. Even if you don’t win the title, it’s an incredible achievement that only a handful of teams can boast.
Give me the Playoff berths and the ensuing pain that comes from losing in the semifinals. I’ll take that every time.
Have a question for next week’s Mailbag? Tweet at us using #SDSMailbag or email me at Adam.Spencer@XLMedia.com.
I believe True Blood was filmed in Baton Rouge. The first few seasons were pretty good.
I think UK has been more disappointing than Arkansas. Arkansas looked thin on paper and injuries have really exposed that. Tshiebwe carries Kentucky. Without him, the Cats would be lucky to win 2 SEC games.
Definitely agree with you on UK. Arkansas is frosh heavy, and injuries have decimated them. UK was ranked No. 4 and a popular title pick because they have several upperclassmen, including the rare sight of multiple seniors on the team.
The sample size of two games is a little small, but it looks like they may be figuring some things out. Hopefully this is a true turnaround we’re seeing.
Also, I hope Smith heals up and Arkansas gets back to somewhat full strength (obviously minus Brazile). There’s still plenty of season left.
Ozark was also filmed in north GA around Lakes Lanier and Allatoona. The Drug kingpin’s castle where his attorney took a bullet to her brain is Chateau Elan, a winery/hotel along Int 85 in NE GA.
The panoramic views between scenes were filmed around Osage Beach, MO, Lake of the Ozarks.
” I didn’t realize so many people consider REM the greatest band ever formed. Silly me.”
Greatest band ever formed? There were arguments made for greatest American band, but don’t recall anyone saying greatest ever.
They don’t proofread their own articles, can’t expect them to proofread the comments as well.
True.
I think what happened was Adam realized he completely forgot about REM or didn’t realize they were from an SEC town, then overcompensated at bit instead of just acknowledging he didn’t realize they were from an SEC town.
Booches, if you didn’t read the Mailbag last week, maybe don’t weigh in like you know what you’re talking about?
Just a suggestion.
I mentioned REM as the third-best band from an SEC town last week. So nothing you said makes sense.
Not that Tom Petty was a bad choice. None if it is really THAT big of a deal and I don’t recall anyone saying REM was the best band in the world, just in the SEC. But no, I didn’t go back and read last weeks article over again, so my apologies.
Me personally, Booches, I wouldn’t take that.
@volfanFL: LOL, well he does have a point (kind of). He’s totally wrong about me not reading the Mailbag last week, but I didn’t at all remember that he mentioned REM, and I haven’t gone back to read it again either. Meh.
This week, what TV show set in (or involving) an SEC town is the best?
Ozark.
And wait a minute, Ozark was shot in… Atlanta? More specifically in the Alpharetta and Roswell area? Was the majority shot in Missouri and just a few scenes or episodes shot in Atlanta? Google is telling me Atlanta and I have friends in ATL that said they watched them film it in Alpharetta so I don’t know where Missouri is coming from?
The aerial lake shots were the Ozarks. Most everything else was Georgia – Lanier and Allatoona areas to a great degree. My wife and I once got the “Ozark” booth at Williamson Bros. BBQ Marietta.
Ahhhh got it. Thanks!
Ozark was also filmed at Adventure Outdoors in Smyrna.
I almost didn’t watch the series, but my wife kept going on about it. After finishing it – one of the 5 best I’ve ever seen – I read a few articles on the actual filming locations, and that led me to the YouTube pieces. So many different places around metro ATL.
The cartel mansion exteriors were the mausoleum at Westview cemetery, where half my family is. The mansion interiors were done at one of my favorite golf resorts, Chateau Elan. One scene was filmed directly outside a Marietta Cuban restaurant we frequent. The casino boat was the Stone Mountain riverboat, very near where I grew up.
These fans that take a vacation to visit Atlanta and videotour the filming locations can’t squeeze it all in in a week.
It takes place in the Ozarks. It doesn’t matter where things were physically filmed, it’s about the setting of the show. Thus Missouri. One of the characters talks about going to Mizzou.
Totally get that, Adam. He asked about filming location.
Check out some YouTube videos on the subject. Amazing number of folks travel to Atlanta from all over just to visit all the filming locations.
Will do!
As far as that goes, the vast majority of Justified was shot in Southern California.
Great point. I love the show, and I love where it’s supposed to be located (Lexington and Harlan). But there are many scenes where they are driving and the mountains behind them are obviously California mountains, not Appalachian. Hollywood Magic!
Ozark was “set” mostly at Lake of the Ozarks in MO. The writer spent his summers at Alhonna resort there as a kid (they actually have the Blue Cat sign from the series there now). The show was mostly shot in Georgia, I think lake Lanier? Regardless, it was not in an SEC “town”, although Mizzou was mentioned a few times and pretty sure a t-shirt or sweatshirt was worn at some point, LOTO is a short 100 miles from Columbia.
The question was “set” in com I’m not actually “shot” in. I can have a movie set in Afghanistan, but totally shoot it in the mountains of Arizona.
Good Will Hunting, set in Boston, shot in Toronto. Canada.
My first crush was Daisy Duke. My first car crush was the General Lee.
So I’m going with the Dukes for old time’s sake.
Easily the Duke boys were the best show and it’s not even close.
And sadly political correctness stopped the show from airing re-runs. I’m sure WillyBoob will show up to tell us all how white people used the show to oppress black people.
100%. That rambling buffoon will be here before you know it blabbering about LBJ.
I feel like he’s trying to virtue signal somehow, because he said that HE’S white.
But yet he was being r acist to black people too.
I don’t understand him.
Living in ur head RENT FREE!!!!??!!!!!! FEELS SOOO GOOD TO COME BACK FROM THE CARRIBEAN AND REALIZE THE SH!T I TOOK IN YOUR MOUTH IS STILL THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unless you can now pay for a vacation with food stamps, nobody believes for a second somebody this retarded could possibly get enough for a vacation.
On the other hand, we do have that brussel sprout as president so maybe there is a chance.
I’m no Arky fan but considering they lost their 2 best players I don’t see how you could be disappointed with them. Name another team that could lose (clearly) their 2 best players and play to their potential.
Sure, that is tough to overcome, but they have been out for awhile now and NSJ barely played to begin with. Arky still has one of the more talented rosters in the SEC, so Muss should be able to figure it out and get his team back in the top half of the SEC. We shall see.
Beavis and Butthead, err Ron and Corch.
RuPaul’s Drag Race err Booches.
Lol. Settle down Beavis, it was just a joke.
I know. I wanted to make you laugh.
“This week, what TV show set in (or involving) an SEC town is the best?”
Stranger Things.
Come on now, Adam. Don’t lie to make friends. I said R.E.M. was the greatest American rock band, and I backed that up with solid evidence. It’s still a subjective argument, though.
You got dragged over coals, rightly, because you put HOOTIE AND THE BLOWFISH in front of R.E.M.
R.E.M. has eleven… ELEVEN legitimately great albums. Hootie has one fun, pop rock album. ONE.
You got into trouble because you told on yourself that 1. You don’t know anything about music and 2. Your taste in music is objectively awful.
He didn’t actually read the comments.
R.E.M. is a great band, probably in the Top 10, but nowhere near the greatest American rock band. Better than Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Aerosmith, Eagles, CCR, the Doors, Van Halen? Very questionable. More of a college rock/alternative band.
The Eagles are garbage. Van Halen had two lead singers and remade old Beach Boys songs. CCR was great. Aerosmith is pop garbage.
REM had 11 amazing albums, influenced alt music for over a decade and had number one selling albums. Tom Petty was great no doubt.
1970s Lynyrd synyrd followed by Eagles
Anyone who thinks the Eagles are great is not worth listening to, at all.
They’re a radio singles band. Their albums are objectively garbage filler music with 1 to 2 radio singles, and that’s it. That’s why their two Greatest Hits albums were such big sellers.
“Anyone who thinks the Eagles are great is not worth listening to, at all.”
The Dude agrees with this statement. Well said.
Tom Petty was a great story teller. His lyrics were like reading a good book. Who remembers the video of Last Dance With Mary Jane ? And the video of The Story of Eddie ? Great music & Greater stories.
“Everybody complains that college football is becoming more like the NFL.”
Everybody? I think it’s great. Get rid of all the pointless bowl games. Pay players. Win win.
Hard to argue with REM for consistency over several years, since the question was best band from an SEC town. I don’t watch TV, and all those TV shows y’all mentioned are utterly foreign to me. I don’t watch basketball, so I have no clue which SEC team is the most disappointing. I don’t know what Kiffin is doing with his QB room, but it’s good to have three if you can keep them on the roster. As for the last question, I’ll take the two straight NY6 wins. It’s a thin line between making the playoff and playing in a NY6 game.
I hear about the argument that Arkansas is down two players. But, it’s the second half in the Vandy game that’s should be more worrisome than just the losing streak. 63 second half points. I can’t even remember the last time that happened in college BB. But I’m sure someone will find it. Speaking of the Dukes of Hazard, Arky could use a Boss Hog right now on the court.
As far as best band from a SEC town, you can’t go wrong with either R.E.M. (Athens) or Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (Gainesville). I also really like CBDB from Tuscaloosa but they are way newer.
Best show would be Ozark even though most of that was filmed in the ATL area and north Georgia.
Playoffs would be my choice. Sadly, in the winner take all society we live in. making a NY6 means little. A year from now, now one will remember who played in the Cotton or Orange Bowl in Jan 2023.
Walking dead is in Senoi….near Newnan which is about 45min south of Atl. Nowhere near Athens.
It is a stretch to include Athens in the Atlanta metro area. They aren’t and are 70+ miles away from Atlanta.
He did say Athen ish whatever that means
Senoia is much closer to Auburn than Athens, even Tuscaloosa might be closer than Athens
I did not read last week’s mailbag. But my heart goes out to anyone whose life experiences have led them to the belief that REM is the greatest American “rock” band. I am sorry. They have some good stuff, been very successful, and have arguably the greatest breakup/have a good cry song ever. But no, just, my prayers are with you.
Then you obviously don’t know jack-s–t about music, so now we know not care what you have to say about the subject matter at all.
Get back to me with any American rock band who had eleven straight amazing albums from their EP Chronic Town through to their last LP with Bill Berry in New Adventures in Hi-Fi.
Get back to me with any American rock band who had the outsized influence over rock music in the 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s like R.E.M. did. When Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley and Thom Yorke are calling them a major influence.
I bet you don’t even know who 2 of the 3 people I just named are without using Google, and that’s a pretty basic piece of trivia.
It’s amazing to me that people open their mouths and offer opinions on subjects of which they so obviously know little. Yet here you are, bulldogbuck55.
Again, it’s not your fault, but bitterness only marinades the pain. Open up a window, or get outside of that basement at least. On a serious note, Metallica, Alice cooper, and I would argue even blink182 had more profound and certainly more positive influence on music in that span. And two of them weren’t even active (one not overly so) for much of that span. Glen buxton alone has impacted and influenced rock more than REM. Not everybody licks the ground where Dave grohl walks. This is not a knock on rem or nirvana, though I personally disliked Cobain, just true. Van Halen, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Skynyrd, Allman brothers, the crickets, the outlaws, Motley Crue, the eagles, RHCP, even Green Day all easy to rank ahead of REM. And lest we forget the frickin Everly brothers, the Experience, asleep at the wheel, and on and on, journey, foreigner. Your name drops are interesting, as stayleys vocals are not very reflective of REM and Cantrell was largely responsible for the direction of the lyrics and music, particularly on their two biggest albums. Yorke is English, but that doesn’t negate that all three are labeled as grunge, one took his own life, another nearly destroyed his band before over dosing. Not the accolades you might think, though I guess yorke is highly regarded (I’m not a big Radiohead fan). Alice In Chains is definitely on my playlist, and they definitely made a splash, but still, Stayley was mostly lauded for his vocals, though angry chair was his creation (I could be wrong there). REM was extremely successful over a long span, we’re influencing other musicians, but that alone does not support a GOAT label. Just because you love them and they had far reaching appeal doesn’t automatically make that so. There are bigger, longer standing, and more influential bands from this country. Also, influential and great are not the same.
Lynyrd Skynyrd was formed in Jacksonville Florida.
As was The Allman Bros band.
Ron…Were the Allman Bros band not formed in Macon, Georgia ?
If Jacksonville qualifies, then I might choose the Allman Brothers. I think REM tops Skynyrd.
Cause your an idiot. Or too young to know
I think “Free Bird” and “Curtis Lowe” are great, two of my favorites. But I don’t have much use for the rest of it.
Dude, you’re the idiot here.
It has nothing to do with being a Dawg and everything to do with not knowing what the f–k you’re talking about, so let me tell you:
YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT THE F–K YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT.
And I’m someone who enjoys Lynyrd Skynyrd, but Lynyrd Skynyrd died in 1977. They had 5 studio albums, and of the 5 are legitimately great albums.
R.E.M. has 11 straight amazing releases, and their final two albums are arguably as good.
I don’t know if you’re just some dude in his late 50’s who stopped listening to music in the 70’s or 80’s or you just legitimately don’t know anything about the history of rock (personally, I’d bet on both those things), but no serious person would rank Skynyrd over R.E.M.
Maybe you like them better, and if that’s the case, like who you want, but that’s not the same thing as an objective ranking.
Corch, if that’s the case, then the Allman Brothers don’t top REM, either. They had only four great albums (including “Fillmore East”). I like them at least as much as REM, but I can agree that REM has the greater overall output.
I’d argue there that before Duane died, The Allman Brothers Band had far more influence in rock music than Skynyrd ever could, and that’s not to say Skynyrd is bad. They’re not. They’re just not Top-5 and probably not Top-10.
I don’t have The Allman Brothers Band in my Top-5, but I have them in my Top-10 for sure.
To me, you have to balance popularity with influence. I think that’s the key to trying to be as objective as possible.
For instance, UsmcDawg’s purient interests were obviously driven by listening to the radio of his youth. It’s why he laughably thinks Eagles are great. That’s a radio band. However, their popularity on radio doesn’t translate to influence.
” I think REM tops Skynyrd.”
Two completely different bands…
I learned something new. I watched Dukes of Hazzard growing up, and assumed it was the county in KY, not GA. I guess the person asking the question came up with the shows, but no Evening Shade (set in Arkansas) or Designing Women (Atlanta)?
Also, I would pick REM for best band from an SEC town, but I think the B-52’s at least belong in the conversation. Athens overall has had the best music scene, as far as bands that got national airplay goes.
What about Honey Boo Boo Child? That paints the perfect picture of Ga and Athens
1998.
Yeah, stay away from music if you didn’t include R.E.M, Black Crowes, or Allman Brothers in your list. I’m guessing you went with some cheesy band like Hootie because you’re not a true music afficianado.
Walking Dead seasons 1-3 are solid.
Ozark season 1 solid
True Detective 1 and 3 are epic and show each state very well in a Southern Noir way.
For those who care, this is as objective a list as I can come up with, trying to take in account musical influence as much as popularity, of the Top-5 American Rock Bands.
And no, for those with truly awful taste in music, you won’t find the f–king Eagles on this list.
The Top-5 American Rock Bands
1. R.E.M.
2. Nirvana
3. The Beach Boys
4. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
5. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
*And please, notice I said I tried to balance influence with popularity.
That is why Velvet Underground, Talking Heads, Devo, or Pixies couldn’t make the cut. The Ramones are punk, and would definitely make a Top-5 list of all time Punk Bands (regardless of country).
Corch Irvin Meyers 2.0
I’d put Metallica in there.
Heavy metal. Keeping it to the rock genre only. Like punk, metal is a step too far outside of rock / hard rock. Same with The Beastie Boys, are a legitimately great with an amazing influence on music, but they’re mostly hip hop with some rock influence.
I think you overrate Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but to each is own. I’m sure I overrate the Allman Brothers. I would put the Velvet Underground higher than Tom Petty.
They’re Top-10 based on influence alone, but Velvet Underground didn’t have the popularity or longevity for Top-5.
The Allman Brothers Band or The Cars would be my No. 6 on the list.
The talking heads were a better band than REM.
Oh, and hey, USMCDawg, this list is for you (and it’s probably not complete):

METALLICA!!!!!!
Heavy metal.
Trying to keep it to rock bands. Why no Metallica, Anthrax, The Ramones, The Beastie Boys, and other bands outside the rock genre.
S M H
And some heavy metal purists would even have them outside a Top-5 list of Heavy Metal bands because they started as a Thrash Metal band.
I will say, and I know I’m doing it here, but speaking with music fans can be pedantic.
“And some heavy metal purists would even have them outside a Top-5 list of Heavy Metal bands because they started as a Thrash Metal band.”
LOL sure.
They did. Their first three albums are pure Thrash.
… And Justice for All began a change in them, even though it’s still a Thrash album.
Then of course, with Metallica (The Black Album) they crossed the line into more mainstream Heavy Metal.

You left off Prince.
W T H
Are you drunk, RonMexico?
“ELVIS IS A PERSON, AND NOT A BAND.”
James Burton (lead guitar), Jerry Scheff (bass), John Wilkinson (rhythm guitar), Larry Muhoberac (keyboards) and Ron Tutt (drums).
Band members.
Dude, if you don’t understand the difference between a solo act who has a backing band and a band, there’s no reason to continue this line of discussion.
“Dude, if you don’t understand the difference between a solo act who has a backing band and a band, there’s no reason to continue this line of discussion.”
I understand music.
Obviously, if you’re making this argument, you don’t.
Elvis isn’t a band. Elvis has a band.
R.E.M. is a band.
It’s a distinction and a difference. Sorry you don’t understand. That must be the Barner in you.
Corch Irvin Meyers 2.0
STEVE
MILLER
BAND.
You continue to ignore it.
You also have to include the Jimi Hendrix Experience, which was technically a band. Or do you consider them heavy metal?
I would consider them psychedelic and proto-heavy metal, like Iron Butterfly.
They’re a tough one. Are they American because of Jimi, or are they English because of Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell?
It’s like with CSN(Y). Are they American because of Stephen Stills and David Crosby? English because of Graham Nash? Canadian because of Neil Young?
Why did you leave out Steve Miller Band? John Mellencamp? Red Hot Chili Peppers? Elvis?
Come on man.
First of all, Elvis is a person not a band.
Red Hot Chili Peppers is on the list.
Steve Miller Band… I dunno.
Mellancamp, same as Elvis, but also, h–l no. Midwestern Bruce Springsteen rip-off wannabe ;-)
“Mellancamp, same as Elvis, but also, h–l no.”
Dude Elvis influenced the Beatles. They even said so.
ELVIS IS A PERSON, AND NOT A BAND.
Are you drunk?
“ELVIS IS A PERSON, AND NOT A BAND.”
He had a band.
That’s not a band. Elvis and the Memphis Trio and Prince and the Revolution are two solo acts with a backing band. The named guy makes all the decisions and makes the most money.
That’s not like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. In those bands, the voices and the pay are roughly equal. It’s one of the reason why both Tom and Bruce have or had solo careers outside of their bands.
“That’s not a band.”
STEVE
MILLER
BAND.
“Hall & Oates”
Rock???? Yacht Rock…
“Mötley Crüe”
Uh…they’re categorized as heavy metal.
Are they? When I was growing up we always considered them a hair band, like Bon Jovi or White Snake.
The RRHOF classifies them as heavy metal. You made the claim to not include Metallica because…heavy metal. Metallica has put out some EXCELLENT albums.
Bon Jovi is pop rock. White Snake….all over the map.
All I can tell you, the Crüe were in that entire collection of hair bands in the 80’s and 90’s that disappeared for the most part after grunge hit.
Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeath, Pantera, Sepultura (not American, I know)… that was heavy metal to me.
Corch Irvin Meyers 2.0
Steve Miller Band
Prince
Come on man.
Prince is a PERSON. He has a band. He is not a band.
When I’m talking about a band, I mean equal members and equal shares.
Elvis had a band. They did not have the same juice or make the same money as Elvis.
It’s not a tough concept, man.
“It’s not a tough concept, man.”
Yet, you ignore STEVE MILLER…..BAND.
Anyway, you’re getting in the weeds here.
The point is… there are SO MANY ROCK BANDS better than Eagles. Hah.
The Eagles are garbage.
You left out Steve Miller Band.
“Prince is a PERSON. He has a band. He is not a band.”
The Revolution is an American band formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1979 by Prince, serving as his live band and later as his studio band. The band’s sound incorporated rock, pop, R&B, funk, new wave and psychedelic elements. Along with Prince’s other projects, the Revolution helped create the Minneapolis sound. By the time of their 1986 breakup, the Revolution had backed Prince on two studio albums, two soundtracks and two videos.
Why you single me out? Just because I like bands I grew up listening to? I’m not reading your stupid list because I don’t care what you think.
Semper Fi.
How bout this. I don’t care
No Ramones?
I agree with some, but the inclusion of the white stripes as band who is supposed to better than the eagles is mind blowing, and they are divorced. The were like a new sonny and Cher, only it was the guy with all the talent. Just know, that has destroyed my ability to respect any opinion you offer. Can’t believe I didn’t include Springsteen and the e street band above, it’s not a complete list or anything but that was a big omission. Back on that note, possible argument that the Grateful Dead, Tool, widespread panic, painters and even phish could be placed over rem, though with a lot of such groups a lack of radio play and international success in some cases cuts the other way. In no world is nirvana a “greater band” than the eagles.
That’s supposed to be Pantera.
Nothing compares to the Breaking Away tv show starring teen heartthrob Shaun Cassidy that was filmed in Athens in the late 70’s. Everything else is a fight for second best.
The best band there ever was, and ever will be featuring the very best of musicians, the best vocalists, and funkiest melodies: “”Earth Wind & Fire”, 2nd best band: Motown’s “Funk Bros.”
I, too, am disappointed in Arkansas. I suspect Muss is disappointed in his team’s performance to date too.
But I still believe in Muss (and hope he is not poached by Texas).
Reports are that NSJ has returned to practice. That’s some reason for optimism.
If we can just make the Dance, I won’t bet against Muss guiding us into the second weekend,
I rfor
Atlanta is not Athens . Dozens of movies and shows are filmed in Atl every year. Has nothing to do with Athens.
There have been about 15 movies filmed at least partially in Athens this century and about a dozen TV shows. Ill bet that no SEC town has more (excluding Nashville which isn’t a college town)
Also Adam, REM is from Athens. Hootie and the Blowfish couldn’t even get a gig in Athens. Comparing REM to that one album abomination of a band is like comparing a Benz to a 1970 Pinto
Great discussion concerning rock music ! Keep up the good work posters. How about the best live concert you’ve ever seen ? Mine was Bruce Springsteen, about 20 years ago.
Probably the Eagles.
Close would be Andre Bocelli.
Rolling Stones at the Fox Theatre in 1978 was great. Also Meat Loaf at Symphony Hall in1978.
As a 15 year old in 1972 I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd in Macon when I had no idea who they were. The dad of friend of mine worked for Capricorn Records and got us tickets.
Nobody remembers him now but the best concert I ever saw at UGA was Harry Chapin in the concert hall across from Park Hall. He was huge at the time. After the concert he invited people up to the stage to talk. Very cool.
Uriah Heep at Alex Cooleys Electric Ballroom on Chri stmas night in 1978 or1979 was also great because venue was so small
