Way-too-early Power 5 conference championship game predictions for 2023
Already wondering who will play in next year’s college football conference championship games?
Good. We’ve got you covered.
Until the transfer portal re-opens in May, we have a good idea of who every contender will have back next season. NFL Draft declarations have been made. The initial postseason wave of transfers is complete.
There will be some talented incoming freshmen signing in February, and another round of transfers from May 1-15. But unless something groundbreaking happens in those windows, the favorites are pretty well established.
There will be a significant adjustment in 2 conferences next season. Both the ACC and Pac-12 are doing away with divisional champions. In each conference, the 2 teams with the best records will meet for the title. The Big Ten and SEC, on the other hand, will continue with their East vs. West arrangements until each conference expands to 16 teams.
Here is who each of our columnists — Saturday Road’s Brett Friedlander, Saturday Tradition’s Alex Hickey, Saturday Out West’s Jon Gold and Saturday Down South’s Connor O’Gara and — expects to see in next year’s conference championship games. (We didn’t include the Big 12 because that league is adding 4 teams and won’t release its 2023 schedule until later in January.)
ACC: Clemson vs. Florida State
Clemson and Florida State are the clear-cut favorites in the ACC. There are others that could challenge, of course. But given Clemson’s hiring of Garrett Riley as OC to work with quarterback Cade Klubnik and the return of Florida State stars Jordan Travis, Jared Verse and others — along with the addition of Fentrell Cypress — the gap between the Tigers, Noles and the rest of the conference (at least at this point) seems pretty large.
In previous years, those 2 teams would have had to battle it out for the Atlantic Division title. Only one could have made the conference title game. But with the ACC doing away with divisions, it is now possible for them to meet again in Charlotte in the ACC Championship. (Clemson and FSU are permanent partners, by the way, in the ACC’s new 3-5-5 scheduling model.)
Other than those 2, the next most likely candidates are Drake Maye and the Tar Heels — provided they can play any defense at all — and Pitt because of Pat Narduzzi.

B1G: Michigan vs. Wisconsin
It’s the battle of which state should have possession of the Upper Peninsula, though the stakes will only be the Big Ten title and a College Football Playoff berth.
On paper, Michigan appears to be the most experienced national championship contender in the country next season. Led by running back Blake Corum, multiple draft-eligible Wolverines announced their return to Ann Arbor. JJ McCarthy didn’t have a draft decision to make, yet, but he’s also back to lead an offense that scored 566 points — the 3rd-highest total in program history and most since 1904.
There is a potential complication, however.
Ohio State and Penn State will be potential Playoff contenders next season. It’s possible, though unlikely, that all 3 teams could finish 11-1 with Michigan beating Penn State, Penn State beating Ohio State, and Ohio State beating Michigan. In that scenario, the division champ could be determined by the Big Ten’s 8th tiebreaker: a random draw.
Really, that’s a thing. And it could come into play next season.
As for the West, Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell looks poised to accomplish the same feat as USC’s Lincoln Riley and TCU’s Sonny Dykes in 2022: Get his team to the conference championship game in his first season.
Led by new offensive coordinator Phil Longo and SMU transfer quarterback Tanner Mordecai, these will be unlike any Badgers you’ve ever seen. And though the B1G West is home to several of the nation’s best defenses, not many of them are accustomed to facing the up-tempo attack Wisconsin will feature next season.
Wisconsin will have a chance to finish a couple of games in front of any other West contender. If you had to bet the Badgers vs. the field, Wisconsin would be the pick.

Pac-12: USC vs. Washington
A year after the Pac-12 did away with division champions, we’ll find ourselves with a traditional North-South matchup in the title game — which will also be USC’s final game in the conference it has called home for 100 years.
USC was on the doorstep of the Playoff last season but couldn’t get it done. With Heisman winner Caleb Williams back for a repeat performance, the Trojans are set up for another big year. But it will all be for nothing unless that putrid defense takes a big step forward.
The Huskies bring back a ton of talent aside from just their Heisman candidate quarterback, Michael Penix Jr. Had guys like Bralen Trice and Rome Odunze left for the NFL or transfer portal, the Huskies would be looking at a 2- or 3-game regression. As it stands, it’s Rose Bowl or bust for UDub. And yes, next year the Rose Bowl is a Playoff semifinal.
Oregon, Oregon State and 2-time defending Pac-12 champ Utah won’t go down without a fight, though.

SEC: Alabama vs. Georgia
I hate to be boring, but the answer is Alabama and Georgia.
How can you pick against Georgia knowing that the majority of that defense is set to return and whoever becomes the starting quarterback is going to be absolutely loaded with pass-catching options?
Everyone has already penciled Georgia in for 12-0, but even 11-1 should be good enough to get to Atlanta once again.
As tempting as it is to say a team like Tennessee or South Carolina could enter the fray, I’m reminded that Georgia’s last East loss came in the middle of 2020. Oh, and a UGA team that lost 15 players to the NFL Draft after the 2021 season dominated both of those teams in 2022.
Kirby Smart fought against complacency in a historic way in 2022, and I’d expect that to be the case again in 2023. Somehow, the Dawgs will feel disrespected that I mentioned 11-1 is a possibility.
Go figure that Alabama is a bit more debatable of a pick coming off a year in which LSU beat the Tide and won the SEC West and ultimately, the Tide spent December saying “what if?”
Yes, Bryce Young and Will Anderson are generational players to replace. But this is usually when Alabama is most dangerous.
People don’t talk about the fact that the Tide only won it all once after starting as a preseason No. 1 under Nick Saban. Those other 5 rings came after offseasons like this one.
While I don’t think it’s fair to assume that Young’s successor will turn into a bona fide star, I also don’t know how one can predict LSU to go at least 11-1 with a win in Tuscaloosa. Why 11-1? Saban has never had consecutive seasons with multiple regular season losses. I don’t expect that to change in 2023.

Boring
He left our the Big 12.
big Ten writers take of the SEC always make me smile in a haha look at you kind of way.
the need for lsu to go at least 11-1 is a critical piece to note, considering that bama has never gone consecutive seasons with 2-conf losses. that said, the cubboard of proven talent on the roster returning in ’23 is a far stretch from where it was in ’20 in following-up the last 2-loss season. outstanding recruiting class, maybe the best ever coming into tuscaloosa this offseason, but a lot of inexperience and unknowns…and no identifiable leaders. i think the odds are well in favor of more than 1 conf loss for bama. give me lsu.
as for the east, i’d expect some fun back and forth as to who all everyone expects will finish 2nd. uga could certainly lose a conf game in ’23, but there’s no one else in the div that i could see losing less than 2. shocking prediction, but uga will take the div again.
considering that bama has never gone consecutive seasons with 2-conf losses. (maybe in the Saban years, or the CFP years, but NEVER?)
2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007
Was about to say, really wasn’t that long ago
You are listing the seasons before Saban, which was still Alabama, but not Saban at Alabama, when the article mentioned Saban at Alabama not Alabama without Saban.
Why 11-1? Saban has never had consecutive seasons with multiple regular season losses. I don’t expect that to change in 2023.
I think it’s all about whether they develop. The talent is always there, and Saban will ensure the culture gets back to more disciplined football. Less penalties and they beat Tennessee. They showed up i their bowl, and outstanding the alphas played out their last game with their teammates and friends then getting full of themselves. I’m as hard core a Dawg as there is, but I appreciate what Brice and Will did to end their college careers.
geez. “considering that [bama] has never gone consecutive seasons with 2-conf losses.”
– change-out saban for bama and you should get what i was saying. clearly a typo.
Oregon vs USC in Pac 12 game. If Michigan and Wisconsin play in Big 10 game it will prove the wisdom of eliminating divisions. Although doing so might mean Mich vs Ohio State playing two weeks in a row for the foreseeable future.
Maybe. How OSU lost to Michigan is beyond me after seeing them play us. I have more faith in Day than Harbaugh to sustain their programs. Harbaugh is an NFL coach trying to bend into a college mode. Day is a CFB coach and will stay as long as OSU will have him, analogous to Kirby at UGA.
Bama is going to be replacing its best players on both sides of the ball…looks like the West could be a jump ball next year between LSU, Bama and A&M if they ever get some coaching.
As long as A&M keeps Jimbo, not gonna happen in the SEC. All about culture. Kelly will instill it at LSU and with their recruiting will be a juggernaut. Bama will fix its discipline issues and be perhaps less explosive on offense but their defense may actually be better overall. Gotta include an RIP to the other Bulldogs in the SEC. I could listen to Leach talk about anything.
I’ll have to disagree. The big knock on Jimbo has been his anemic offense. He went out and picked an OC that can sure nuff coach offense despite his own personal shortcomings. Granted it may all blow up on A&M, but they have a decent defense and plenty of talent. Petrino will set them on fire one way or the other.
Possibly the last year of Divisions in the SEC.
Has to be, it’s awkward having 2 Bama teams and two Texas teams on one side but by that same measure I guess it’s FSU fault there aint two FL teams in the East
UF would have to approve FSU being in the SEC. I know Bowden never wanted to be in the SEC because he had an easier path in the ACC, but it was UF that always quashed any discussion of an FSU move.
Nothing of what I see from Bama tells me they’re going to be better than LSU next season with a returning Jayden Daniels.
It’s just typical and lazy to pick Bama, so that’s what was done.
LSU and Georgia, and I’d honestly give the Tiguhs a good shot to beat my Dawgs who will sleepwalk through that schedule thanks to the SEC forcing us to drop OU.
It hurts us to not play competitive games early. Wouldn’t be surprised if Kirby has been beating bushes to buy out one of the early sacrificial lambs since we lost OU game, which to this day makes no sense to me.
Bama
Bama
Bama
Every year, it’s the same guess. Crazy to think with everything LSU has coming back. I think LSU challenges Georgia for the title.
Bama isn’t losing to LSU two years in a row, especially with the game being in Bryant-Denny. If you want to pick another team, then go with TAMU. They have the talent and maybe the coaching will get better. Additionally, they’ll get Bama at home.
2010 and 2011 is the last time it happened. It’s due to happen again.
why on gods green earth would anyone pick aTm to be the favorite to win the west – what are the vegas odds they’re even bowl elegible?
Yeah I chuckled at that. Jimbo is running an asylum over there. NILs don’t mean championships or pro potential. That comes from hard work and film study.
I don’t think they are the favorite. I think Bama is. I was implying that LSU shouldn’t be considered because Bama isnt losing to them twice in a row, especially at home. TAMU at least gets Bama at home.
The only problem with aTm is they still have Jimbo
How we go through an SEC slate without facing Bama or LSU is beyond me. Divisions gotta go, and probably should put in NFL style schedule rotations. Best teams get the most challenging schedule. Really don’t need championship if we do that, whomever has best record is champion. Given expanded playoff, really doesn’t matter as much as the SEC will have two or more bids to the playoff for the foreseeable future.
When the article is titled Power 5 conference championship game predictions and only lists 4… Hmmmm… (insert head scratching emoji)
Checked again, found the parenthetic note, carry on.
UGA v. LSU. The taking hair-dos want to give all the benefits of doubt with Bama but they are as depleted and void as they’ve been under nick. They will lose 2 or 3 games this season. It’s a true rebuild at Bama and nick is running out of time.
Talking
Ask me in July. This day and age of craziness, i.e transfer portal, 13 million dollar feshman , etc. I will wait until the end of summer and hope for the best.
It’s gonna be LSU.
Bama is gonna lose 3-4 regular season games.
Set the crack pipe down.
Writers are in a hard spot here. On the one hand, if you make the “lazy” pick of Alabama vs Georgia, you get slammed for being boring and lazy. On the other hand, if you make a bold prediction, say predicting Tennessee vs LSU, you get various vicious fanatics of certain favored teams boldy declaring that there’s absolutely no way that their mighty, invincible team could possibly lose, and that it’s disrespectful, degrading, etc. etc.
Rock, meet hard place.
Personally, I would love to see the latter matchup mentioned above, but I will have to see what the final shape of the teams before I make any predictions.
The battle for the east will come down to Vandy versus Missouri.
In lacrosse perhaps
I can see why he didn’t pick LSU. And I’m ok with it. We are one year away from stinkin up the place.
Saw finally someone put a change.org petition to fix rules so non 1st team all Americans may be selected. Other guys than Stetson deserve consideration as well.
Yawn……GA vs Bama. Hard to pick against those two. But same ol same ol. Hope the Noles topple Clemsux in the A She She. ACC is pathetic as a football conference.
UNC vs Florida State
Texas vs OU
Oregon vs Washington
Penn State vs Wisconsin
Bama vs UGA
“I’m reminded that Georgia’s last East loss came in the middle of 2020”
Yep, we’ve lost a grand total of ONE GAME against everyone else in the country since that loss to Florida in 2020.
33-1
Upper Michigan? The Yoopers?
They are all (all 50,000 of them) ersatz Canadiens only interested in ice hockey.
Anyhow, I hope Tennessee and Ole Miss are good next year because having to hear, “Georgia ain’t played nobody,” for half a season will have a ring of truth for a change.
Hopefully putting them down, I look forward to the best the West has to offer in Atlanta.
If things go as easily as one may predict right now, that would be epic.
