Greg McElroy discusses Stetson Bennett's place on Georgia's Mount Rushmore
Stetson Bennett is the ultimate underdog “Dawg” story in college football after winning back-to-back national titles at Georgia. With only a handful of passers garnering the title of “double champ” where does Bennett list all-time on Georgia’s Mount Rushmore?
ESPN’s Greg McElroy believes that Bennett is currently No. 2 on the Dawgs’ top 4 rankings following his success with the program. During a segment on the “Always College Football” podcast, McElroy said that only former Heisman Trophy running back Hershel Walker carries a bigger stick in Athens.
“There’s a bunch of great all-time Georgia Bulldogs that I grew up with from 1998 until now in 2023,” McElroy said. “There’s a bunch. I don’t think any of them can be in front of Stetson Bennett.
Bennett took over in 2020 as a part-time starter following his run at Jones County Community College before being replaced by JT Daniels midway through the season. Daniels would end up suffering an oblique injury in 2021, opening the door for Bennett to return to the starting role.
After winning back-to-back national championships, is Stetson Bennett the Georgia GOAT?
If you look at the accolades, the argument may be closer than you think…#AlwaysCFB | #GoDawgs pic.twitter.com/q5YhbJacr9

In 2 seasons, Bennett threw for 6,989 yards, 56 touchdowns and 14 interceptions en route to wins over Alabama and TCU in the national championship. In his final game against the Horned Frogs, Bennett threw for 304 yards and scored 6 touchdowns on the way to a 65-7 victory.
“When you really look at the accolades and accomplishments, it might be closer than you think,” McElroy said when comparing the success of Walker and Bennett.
Walker was a once in a generation talent, like Bo and Tebow were. A clear #1 GOAT at UGA.
Bennett is definitely top four without question.
Mid
1998.
Good luck with 9-3
Okay, gwhite.
When I say have fun with 7-5 or 8-4, that’s actually a prediction that is possible. How does it feel that what you say is only powered by your bitter, salty envy and has absolutely no chance to happen?
1998, chump.
It has been 8773 Days since Tennessee last won an NCAA Football Title.
Corch 9-3
1998.
Herschel will always carry a big stick at UGA…. And I think Bennet is right there beside him and I think Kirby does as well since he played there and now what he’s done as a coach there. GO DAWGS
Definitely a great trio to start the discussion on who are the all-time greats in the program.
Georgia Football Mount Rushmore (Players Only):
Frank Sinkwich
Charly Trippi
Herschel Walker
Stetson Bennett
Herschel is and always will be the GOAT. Stetson won MVP in all 4 of his playoff games and split the MVP award with Bryce Young in two SEC Championship games leading to two National Championships.
No player in Georgia history has produced at a higher level than Stetson Bennett.
Walker’s off the field nonsense ought to carry some weight. The dude has serious issues.
Your mom has serious issues. But she’s still your mom.
Same thing applies.
That’s a pretty pathetic response, but you do you. I’m not sure how anyone could think talking nonsense about an 86 year old woman is clever, but then again, you do you.
He doesn’t have issues. He is what 60 yrs old now? He’s been hit and beat up during football and boxing/wrestling career bouts. He still speaks with Truth and intelligence. If you don’t know the man personally, please don’t make comments like that. Keep them to yourself. Fair enough?
You’ve got to be kidding me. The dude choked his wife and deserted his family. His own son has come out against him. He goes on ridiculous rants that are completely incoherent. You thinking this clown speaks with any sort of intelligence really just speaks to your lack of intelligence. Good luck with that.
The alternative was a man who wants to make killing babies as easy as buying aspirin.
All speculation and never proved in a court of law. Get your facts right before speaking such rubbish.
Proven in a court of law? That’s good stuff. Two different women said he tried to get them to have abortions. I guess you think they were lying. His own son refused to vote for him. He’s talking about vampires on the campaign trail. But, he was a good football player, so vote for him. He was also a Texan until just recently, and is probably already back there. If that’s the best Georgia can do, I’m glad I’m in Florida.
Imagine being 60 years old yet still acts like an 12 year old.
1998.
You are 60.
1998
And of course you have PROOF of his alleged “serious issues”, right?
Or did you learn of his, again, alleged issues from your social media accounts?
I mean, if it’s on Twitter or Instagram it must be true, right?
You guys are sheep. How sad.
If we are naming the top 4, I would include David Pollack. 3 time All-American game changer is hard to top.
Bennett was a chess piece in a team build.
He performed well enough to not screw it up.
He was great at that.
