Tell the Truth Monday: Brian Kelly has LSU ahead of schedule
It’s the first Monday of 2023.
And the last Tell the Truth Monday of the 2022 season.
LSU finished its 2022 season and started 2023 with a dominant 63-7 victory against Purdue in the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla.
The truth is that the Boilermakers didn’t belong on the same field as the Tigers.
It’s also true that – because of opt-outs – the Purdue team playing Monday wasn’t the same team as the one that played in the Big Ten Championship Game.
And it’s true that the 2022 LSU team isn’t as good as the final score against the Boilermakers might suggest.
The Tigers were missing key players, too, but they had clearly superior depth to Purdue even though the depth isn’t yet to where head coach Brian Kelly expects it to be or where it needs to be for LSU to be consistent contenders for SEC and CFP titles.
It was a nearly flawless performance by the Tigers and an exhilarating end to Kelly’s debut season.
But it doesn’t mean LSU has arrived.
The final performance by the 2022 Tigers bears many of the same characteristics as their entire season.

Louisiana sports betting is officially live in much of the state. Whether it is betting on SEC football or LSU football games or the Heisman race each year, if you live in Louisiana, you can now do it from your mobile phone.
It’s eye-opening because it exceeded realistic expectations.
It shows that Kelly and his staff have this group primed to perform about as well as it’s capable of performing.
It’s encouraging because it demonstrates that the program is ahead of schedule, considering the rebuilding that was necessary when Kelly succeeded Ed Orgeron.
But the key to keeping the win and the season in perspective is to realize that being ahead of schedule doesn’t mean the same thing as mission accomplished.
Kelly’s mission is to make LSU a perennial contender to win the SEC West, a program capable of winning the SEC title any season and periodically winning national championships. The same thing Alabama has been and Georgia has become.
During the regular season, the Tigers showed that already they were able to beat Alabama – albeit at home, by 1 point, in overtime.
That’s a significant accomplishment in a single game but not necessarily evidence of programs on equal footing.
The Tigers also showed that they weren’t yet able to beat Georgia, or even come terribly close, in a 50-30 loss in the SEC title game.
The season also featured a sloppy, last-second loss to Florida State in the opener, a punch-in-the mouth blowout loss at home against Tennessee and a head-scratching performance in a double-digit loss to a 5-win Texas A&M team in the regular-season finale with a Playoff berth still potentially within grasp.
The body of work leading into the Citrus Bowl showed that LSU was a good team, one capable of playing like a top-5 team on occasion and one also capable of playing like an unranked team on occasion.
The dominance of a Big Ten team in one of the most prestigious non-New Year’s 6 bowls isn’t as indicative of where the program is as the numbers might make it seem.
The Tigers still have a lot of work to in developing championship-caliber depth and they seem well on their way to doing that. No offense to Purdue, especially amid significant opt-outs, but being deeper than the Boilermakers isn’t the target Kelly has in his sights.
There’s one more truth – a significant one – that has to be acknowledged.
Evaluating where the LSU program is on the first couple of days of 2023 requires assessing more than just the won-lost record, the statistics and the most recent performance.
It requires looking at the foundation.
Kelly and his staff inherited a dysfunctional program. They not only needed to bring in a bunch of really good players, but they had to demonstrate that they had a program in which elite college players can maximize their development as NFL prospects, mature with like-minded, dependable teammates and be nurtured by coaches they can trust.
The Tigers, like the Boilermakers, were missing players because of NFL opt-outs and the transfer portal. But LSU wasn’t hampered nearly as much as it was a year earlier and the return of quarterback Jayden Daniels shows progress in player retention.
More than that, though, the way Kelly’s team prepared, performed and celebrated Monday demonstrated that a championship culture is being established. And that will positively impact the ability to attract and retain more and more elite players.
The Tigers have not arrived.
But they look like they’re going to arrive earlier than projected.
If Kelly can beat Alabama in back to back seasons, I’ll be a believer. But not until then..
Dumbest take ever. So in order for a coach to be taken seriously they have to beat Saban back to back??? Using your stupid logic, no coach in CFB is any good.
He’ll beat Billy for sure. Beat him like a drum at a rock concert.
“The dominance of a Big Ten team in one of the most prestigious non-New Year’s 6 bowls isn’t as indicative of where the program is as the numbers might make it seem.”
I didn’t see much “dominance” by Purdue in this bowl. I assume the author meant “dominance over” a Big Ten team…
I believe you misread what he said. He was speaking of LSU’s dominance over a B1G team.
Don’t know what they teach in journalism school, but English doesn’t seem to be a subject. He should have said “The dominance over a Big Ten team…”
It is such a good feeling knowing that the LSU football program finally has a competent head coach leading the program. Coach Oh-no! was a bumbling fool who was in waaaaay over his head. Kelly is definitely laying the foundation for gridiron success.
Competent?
Care to explain that to billy?
He’s sorta lost in the wilderness of self pity.
I think Orgeron just got lazy after the 2019 season and let the program go to sh!t. I agree about Kelly. Considering the state of the program when he took over, he’s way ahead of schedule.
Agree with Bayou Tiger. I do give O great credit for changing the offensive system and bringing in Burrow. He simply took his hands off the wheel. But by just about every metric, BK is an upgrade at HC. He just won the West with an incomplete roster and what will likely be the worst tm he’ll have in BR.
He didn’t take his hand off the wheel, the coach that asst OC left for the NFL and there was nobody that could replace him.
The coach “who left” that you are talking about got a lot of credit for that 2019 Tiger offense has bounced around a bit after leaving and, as far as I know may still be looking for a job equivalent to the one he left at LSU. Despite no longer being able to take credit for Steve Ensminger’s play calling, he would certainly be an upgrade at Florida and might contribute to its downward trajectory. P.S. Mullen and 0 are is still counting their buyout money and laughing.
I agree with you. A high school coach could have won the Natty in ‘19 with the talent Coach O had on that team!
Coach O was foolish and got a big head after the Natty. But “over his head”? What a stupid take.
The man assembled the best team, arguably, ever and won a NC in DOMINANT fashion.
He got Burrow. He got the players. He got his OC. He took some superstars and some overlooked players and made magic.
His last year plus was embarrassing but you can’t deny what he did.
Get lost troll
He and Kirby and Nick know how to get a program to apex level. He still has titles to contend for and win – both SEC and playoff – but he will have better talent there than at his previous place. It will be nothing but absurd if LSU isn’t voted the SEC west favorite going into next season, considering all that nick has to replace.
Hey!!!!
Billy can write letters!!
Does that count for anything?
Kelly is a good coach and will have LSU competitive every season.
Both Kelly and Heupel overachieved this season. Next season should be exciting for both teams. Glad to see the SEC developing team depth, making any SEC team dangerous on any given Saturday.
I disagree. I don’t think either team over achieved. Both are really good coaches and know how to get the best out of the players they have on the teams, unlike a certain other nameless coach in the SEC that coaches the western most SEC team.
Kelley and Heupel are both highly competent coaches who didn’t overachieve their respective abilities. What they both did was exceed fan and sports show Talking Heads’ prognostications. You are correct however in thinking about a new level of competition in both divisions. And, things are improving at USCe, maybe Kentucky and even Vanderbilt so Georgia will no longer be playing in a mini-ACC. There is a big shake-up looming in Fall 2023.
I don’t understand “isn’t as good as the score”. Today they were. Maybe 56-7. That last 99.5 yard pick six by a player that hasn’t played a down all year long might be something that they wouldn’t do again if they played tomorrow.
The players that lined up against Purdue today were just a lot better. And the players that are going to the NFL from LSU are a lot better than the ones from Purdue that are going to the NFL or some other school.
How many of the “writers” actually READ what they write?? “Dominance of a Bee One Gee (correct spelling)”! At LEAST just read what you wrote BEFORE you hit “send” or whatever you “writers” do! I’m guessing there are no editors on this site – too many grammatical and spelling errors! No need to get into the proliferation of pathetic analysis, but I do find SOME of the articles entertaining and SOME comments are fun too! So I guess weighing all that vs the COST it’s not such a bad deal!
None of them do. That is why their articles constantly look like they have been written by a 5th grader.
That’s what they said about Mullen in Gainesville, but he didn’t fix the locker room. Miles and coach O we’re both fired for off the field issues. So far, Kelly doesn’t appear any different.
You clearly aren’t paying attention. Why comment then?
You know very little about LSU. One of the most important things Kelly has done is fix the locker room. Miles was not fired from LSU for off field issues. He was fired because he refused to change from 3 yards and a cloud of dust football. He was fired from Kansas for off field issues. The downward trajectory of almost every on field measurable for O was what got him fired.
Glad Tennessee got them early. I think that win at LSU that took the VOLS season to another level of BELIEVE.
The football scheduling gods definitely lined up 4 the Vols w the early kickoff in Tigerland. Just ask Saban lol. The Vols were on fire 4 sure but maybe at night the Tigers could have made it a little closer. Coach O just caught lightening in a bottle w asst OC Brady, Burrow, Chase and Jefferson. The Tiger Nation will forever be indebted to him for 2019. But he could not evaluate coordinators and it cost him time as the HC. So when Lsu offered him 17+ million $ to go on vacation from the Sec + college grind naturally he split.
Luckily Lsu missed out on L. Riley who went to USC and BK was ready for SEC primetime, lots of $$$, a fanbase hungry for success and of course one of the hottest recruiting areas in the country. Plus he has the experience to appreciate all the above while rebuilding LSU’s foundation and appeal while chasing the elusive Natty. Geaux Tigers!
I hear this lighting in a bottle comment all the time. O flamed out spectacularly because he reached the mountaintop and didn’t have the drive to keep it going. But he needs to be given credit for 2019. The thought behind hiring him in the first place was you need a top 5 roster to compete with Bama and you can pay for assistants. The 2019 roster wasn’t luck it was his recruiting and talent evaluation. He hired Brady who was an unknown Saints assistant. Most of the success in CFB is due to recruiting so he needs to get credit for doing a great job on the most important aspect of his job.
The record got better each year from the time he took over and culminated in 2019. When Saban has the best players, 5 star quarterbacks, and the best assistants money can buy nobody says a peep but when a guy like O recruits an incredibly talented team, has a great qb, and a very good staff he is just lucky.
Saban is wired different he is 100% focused on football and is never satisfied. O isn’t wired that way and couldn’t keep it going but stop the lightning in a bottle stuff. He built that team and staff over several years it wasn’t given to him.
I’d say yes and no. Extremely embarrassing losses to UT at home and A&M. Positive signs are beating Bama and pummeling Purdue in the bowl game. don’t hold the UGA performance against them.
