Spencer Sanders to Ole Miss: College football fans, media share reactions
Spencer Sanders announced his decision to transfer to Ole Miss on Thursday morning, giving the Rebels’ QB room yet another shakeup.
Earlier in the week, Ole Miss received a commitment from LSU transfer quarterback Walker Howard. The Rebels also still have a returning QB in Jaxson Dart, who finished 7th in the SEC in passer efficiency rating last season.
Sanders is a veteran who has led Oklahoma State for the past 4 seasons. He leaves Stillwater as one of the most decorated QB’s in program history. He’s second all-time in passing yards and third in passing touchdowns.
Howard, meanwhile, is much less experienced but has impressive pedigree as a prospect. He was a 4-star recruit in the class of 2022 and just finished his true freshman season at LSU.
Dart has been relatively efficient at both USC and Ole Miss in his career, but stumbled at times last season for the Rebels. Still, his experience in this offense shouldn’t be completely ignored as he prepares to fight 2 newcomers for the starting job.
If all 3 of those quarterbacks remain on the roster until the fall, that creates a crowded situation in Oxford.
Here’s some of the reaction to Sanders’ decision — and the potential fall-out:
So Lane Kiffin added Spencer Sanders and Walker Howard in the portal.
Yeah, he needed depth desperately, but if you think Lane is sold on Jaxson Dart, I think you’re mistaken.

I'm sure having 3 QBs on the roster that are all expecting to start will go really well. https://t.co/fCQcL7AMig

Wait…Spencer Sanders, Dart, and Howard? Who is transferring out? https://t.co/Qso8vraVgp

Ole Miss has been heavily in the mix with Spencer Sanders from the beginning of his process, and eventually the Rebels get their guy.
This creates, arguably, the most fascinating QB room in the country. Sanders, Jaxson Dart and Walker Howard all in the same place. https://t.co/kOpjZQY8Lg

Recruiting over your starting quarterback is one thing.
Recruiting over the guy who you recruited over your starting quarterback is a WILD move. https://t.co/JgJOCaakTc

You could tell this season they didn’t have much confidence in Jaxson Dart. Now he’d have to beat out Sanders. https://t.co/fEqE0SwlYi

“They say if you have two quarterbacks you really have none.”
Lane Kiffin: “Get me three then.” https://t.co/AnWbgPJNFY

The @OleMissFB QB room is STACKED after @Lane_Kiffin added Oklahoma State Star @SpenceSanders!
Beating out Hugh Freeze & Auburn makes it that much sweeter too. The Portal King strikes again! #HYDR #TransferToTheSip pic.twitter.com/AZtov8HjCd

Insert “what’s he building in there” TikTok sound for Ole Miss’ QB room https://t.co/626wvsaVkZ

Holy cow, poor Jaxson Dart if this situation makes him transfer again.
Started at USC, new coach and Caleb Williams comes in. Goes to Ole Miss and starts, then a handful of experienced QBs transfer in. What a weird situation for him. https://t.co/vGwcKqFCJ6

This move is puzzling for a number of reasons. https://t.co/qRD36HdLnP pic.twitter.com/8oU8dUaaZ6

Someone explain to me how this move makes sense for Spencer Sanders or Ole Miss
Because… I ain't seein' it

Jaxson Dart, Walker Howard, and Spencer Sanders is a heck of a QB room https://t.co/Br66QjzmwS

I do not understand this. Why leave OSU where you’re already a legend on campus and are the guaranteed starter?
Now you’re going to an Ole Miss QB room that already has Jaxson Dart and Walker Howard. https://t.co/oT3gnmobEZ

Spencer Sanders just going the Baker Mayfield route in the portal. Screw those quarterbacks. https://t.co/u3uUvGU8yk

Sanders will be the starter. But there’s no way Lane will name a starter until late fall practice so the others won’t transfer. Dart probably goes to portal first.
dude would need a waiver to be able to play in ’23 since 2nd transfer. Is that correct?
Seems like they give waivers out pretty easily these days. I mean look at JT Daniels.
Who the hell knows. They seem to make an exception for every player. There are some players that are on their 4th team in 5 years. If the transfer rules were adhered to, they would have had to sit out a year for every transfer but the first, unless they were a graduate transfer. That would mean at least 2 years of sitting the bench.
Well someone has to be the designated QB for 4th and 8 on the old piss 37. Analytics right? The others can hold clipboard and signal in plays.
Competition is great for everyone! Hope the best player starts.
I guess if players of any position think they are so great that they are going to walk into any major program and have zero competition, and just be handed the job, they need this wake up call. If you are not good enough to beat out just 2 players, you aren’t good enough to start. Maybe you should have stayed with the school you were with.
Probably the smartest pick for Sanders. Highly doubt he’d be able to beat out a healthy Ashford and seems like he knows that with this move. He would have made a serviceable backup for us at best.
Really don’t understand the backlash on Lane bringing in competition in the QB room tho. Dart could be the guy, but I wasn’t impressed this past year. Howard was a great get but he’s inexperienced. Smart move by Lane to not settle and make sure he had some starting experience at QB from the portal.
Really hope you’re joking on that one. You think he can beat out Dart but not Ashford? I don’t get that logic at all….
Because they is no logic to get. Sanders is leaps and bounds better than Ashdod. The kid can play. If Okie State had any resemblance of an oline he would’ve had a great year.
Do NOT like Lane but he can coach QB’s as good or better than anyone in the country
Actually watch the players and games you comment on before you comment. Sanders is SEC backup caliber at best.
Clearly you have smoked one…. Sanders is MUCH better.
I’m not joking. Dart is the joke here.
Why would a guy transfer somewhere he’d be less likely to win the starting job with what amounts to be his last chance? Short answer, he wouldn’t, hence his commitment to Ole Miss. come to terms with it.
Lol. Love the loyalty to a QB who led you to a Egg Bowl loss. I think a lotta guys could beat out (inaccurate)Dart
Don’t know why Auburn fans are upset.Eventually one of them will transfer, and when he does…Auburn can have our leftovers again.
Got news for you there bud, Auburn only wanted the guy for depth. No one is disappointed we didn’t get a backup QB. Maybe you need to ask yourself why a 4-year starter would transfer to a program that already has a starter returning. Simple answer is he thinks he can beat out that starter. He chose between OM and Auburn. Be happy you got him because he’s clearly a smart cookie knowing he could beat out Dart over Ashford, because he’s right.
Here we go again with the Auburn fans, please please come to Auburn. Players, coaches, etc turn them down and all of a sudden Auburn claims they weren’t interested or offered, HYSTERICAL. i solved the puzzle as they taught Freeze how to use a bruner phone so there would be no record to deny…
What’s hysterical is that the very mention of Auburn made you guys pay a guy on a 5-game losing streak $10mil/yr, and it’s a guy YOU ALREADY HAD. Meanwhile, we strike a bargain and pull ahead of OM in recruiting in 1 month.
I find it ironic that you people actually think you’re in our heads. Maybe it’s because we don’t ignore you all like we do Mizzou and Vandy fans. Probably need to change that.
Here’s the facts for you bc you’re obviously having trouble comprehending everything…
– you want Kiffin. You don’t get him
– you pick up a 2nd rate Kiffin for a “bargain” that’s driven by his past call girl issues
– you want sanders. You don’t get him
– you are still holding your program up as a national power based on past success
– your program is still the dumpster fire it was last year
The end.
I’m just a dumb old Kentucky hillbilly, not a mathemetician, but from what I see there are 18 comments on this article not including mine. Seven of the 18 are from Auburn fans, five of the seven from you alone. That means without any help at all you personally are responsible for over 1/4 of all the comments on the article.
There are more comments from Auburn fans than Ole Miss fans. Maybe that’s why there’s the perception that Ole Miss is in your heads?
Agreed BillB. I am however absolutely shocked that the ultimate asshat Auburn fan, Ron “I live in my mom’s basement” Mexico hasn’t commented yet.
