Yes, it's fair to be concerned about the Georgia defense vs. TCU after consecutive poor showings
I thought the safest bet in the Peach Bowl was that Kirby Smart wouldn’t allow his team to have consecutive bad defensive games.
Kirby Smart talked about the adjustments that needed to be made after allowing 2 LSU quarterbacks to throw for 506 yards in the SEC Championship. Before that, the Dawgs hadn’t allowed anybody to throw for 300 yards all year and they had only allowed 5 quarterbacks to accomplish that feat since the start of 2017. The last time Georgia allowed 25 points in consecutive games was the 2018 SEC Championship and Sugar Bowl, where UGA surrendered 28 points to Texas in a non-Playoff bowl game (make of that what you will).
History suggested Ohio State would struggle to sustain scoring drives in the Peach Bowl. I mean, Smart had Georgia going back to “camp-style practices” and they emphasized conditioning following the SEC Championship. Smart was determined not to let the semifinal be shades of the SEC Championship.
Then a depleted Ohio State offense threw for 348 yards and averaged 10.2 yards per pass attempt in a 41-point effort that nearly sent the Dawgs packing. But a bend-but-don’t-break Georgia stand forced a 50-yard field goal attempt that ultimately never had a shot.
Is Georgia’s defense doomed against the high-octane TCU offense? No, but it’s absolutely fair to have some concern.
If you listened to Smart’s postgame press conference, you saw that he was at a bit of a loss for his team’s defensive game plan.
“A lot of credit goes to them. We tried man. We tried zone. We mixed it up,” Smart said after the Peach Bowl. “The most disappointing was the series before the half.”
The series before the half that Smart was referring to was when Ohio State went 4 plays for 75 yards in just 55 seconds to take a 28-24 lead going into the break. It was exactly the type of drive that UGA avoided throughout really the past 2 years. Georgia couldn’t get pressure on Stroud with a 4-man rush, and ultimately, he had enough time to drop a perfectly thrown ball into the arms of Xavier Johnson, who made a spin move to scamper in for the 37-yard touchdown:

Until Marvin Harrison Jr. went down after he took that hit in the end zone, it felt like Georgia was somewhat helpless defending the Ohio State passing attack. Stroud was either well protected and able to step into throws like we saw on the Johnson touchdown, or he was elusive and he bought time to find open Ohio State receivers.
Smart said afterward that they missed 4 sacks in the first half alone, and that was against Stroud, who isn’t know for his escapability by any means. Max Duggan, on the other hand, has shown that a bit more consistently. Not only does Duggan have the 461 rushing yards and 8 scores with his legs, but he’s only taken 2 total sacks in his past 4 games. Even though he wasn’t at his best against Michigan or against Kansas State, he kept the offense moving with his mobility.
Georgia’s relatively low sack numbers weren’t necessarily seen as a knock heading into the Ohio State game because the Dawgs showed they could generate pressure with 4 and the pass defense still only allowed just 11 passing touchdowns and 6 yards per attempt in the first 13 games. But more than half (8) of UGA’s 15 passing touchdowns allowed have come in the past 2 games. Those also are the only instances of allowing 300 passing yards all year. Receivers Malik Nabers, Kayshon Boutte, Harrison and Emeka Egbuka all passed the century mark against the Dawgs.
Is that a sign that offenses have figured Georgia out? Or was that just the byproduct of 2 elite group of pass-catchers playing at an extremely high level?
It might be a bit of both. Smart said that they mixed up coverages, but you know when you line up against Georgia that they’re going to play a whole lot of press-man coverage. Will they do that against the extremely talented Quentin Johnston?
Of those 4 receivers who torched Georgia the past 2 games, he shares the most similarities with the aforementioned Harrison. They both had exactly 20 catches of 20 yards apiece, though Johnston actually has more catches of 30 yards (13) than Harrison. If you look at where they typically line up, you see even more similarities between the 6-4 wideouts:
Both Harrison and Johnston could be the first receivers taken off the board in their respective draft classes (Harrison isn’t draft-eligible until 2024) because of how smooth they are in and out of their breaks.
Harrison could’ve had an even bigger day against Georgia but he suffered his second drop of the season on a pass over the middle that could’ve easily gone for 20 yards on a second quarter drive that halted Ohio State’s momentum. Who knows how Harrison would’ve impacted that game had he not been forced to the sideline late in the 3rd quarter. He certainly showed enough to suggest it could be a struggle to contain Johnston.
If Georgia’s adjustment is playing a bit more zone, the risk is that Johnston can make a play like this, wherein he gets a bit more room to operate underneath and make defenders miss in space:
QUENTIN JOHNSTON OH MY GOODNESS!!!

And if the argument is “well, Georgia won’t allow that to happen because it’s much more disciplined making open-field tackles,” I’d suggest rewatching the past 2 games. It was by no means a “clean” game from a coverage or tackling standpoint, which was why Georgia allowed a combined 7 passing plays of 30 yards against LSU and Ohio State (5 went for touchdowns). In the 12 previous games, Georgia allowed just 16 such plays, or 1.33 per contest.
I say that because it wasn’t long ago that Georgia, on the heels of the Tennessee showing, looked somewhat immortal defensively. On that day, the nation’s top scoring offense was held without either a passing touchdown or a gain of 20 yards for the first 55 minutes. We wondered if Georgia’s style with limited blitzing and mostly press coverage would work against an elite passing attack. On that day, it did. In the 2 most recent instances, it didn’t.
This is no longer about whether Georgia can have a defensive individual like Jalen Carter or Kelee Ringo take over. UGA’s defensive performance against TCU won’t be determined by whether Malaki Starks makes a couple of freshman mistakes like he did against LSU.
Against Tennessee, it was a total group effort at each level. Against LSU and Ohio State, each level of Georgia’s defense played a part in surrendering big offensive days. Of course, in all 3 of those games, UGA got the defensive stops it needed to pull out a win.
Maybe this is just what we should expect in a championship game. Both semifinal games were shootouts and if you look at the national championship winners in the Playoff era, 7 of the 8 hit at least 33 points and the losing team averaged 25 points.
Georgia has now allowed 30 or more points in consecutive games. This is the first time since Georgia’s rise under Smart that the Dawgs suffered consecutive defensive letdowns in games with national title hopes on the line. Perhaps the buck stops with TCU. Or maybe we’ll get another reminder that last year’s defense was clearly on a different level than this year’s.
Whatever the case, there’s only 1 goal that matters now for Georgia’s defense.
Don’t make it 3 in a row.
The Ohio State offense played it’s best game in two(2) years and Stroud stood proud in the clean pocket to make his throws. Their receivers at OSU are also elite & would give any defense fits.
He was super clean because the oline was tackling defenders and not blocking. Our dlinemen looked like they had been sacked all day by the 4th quarter.
You’re suggesting the officiating was corrupt?
Nope, he is suggesting they missed a bunch of holds. Doesn’t make them corrupt.
Jalen Carter was tackled a lot. Most refs would call that. I don’t have a problem with the refs, as long as they call everything consistent. I thought overall the refs did a good job.
OSU also has a dramatically better OL than TCU! Duggan to Johnson will absolutely be something we see but all those plays were Stroud got to direct traffic until his receiver has got open aren’t things that will happen Monday night. A softer line, referees who were willing to call offensive penalties, and a soft defense that will let Georgia’s run game grind out rest time when needed will be huge differences
Georgia’s gonna be fine, just watch.
There are multiple factors figuring into the defensive results of the last two games. OS had 5-weeks to scheme for the GA offense. Stroud finally decided to (understood) that he would have to use his legs for OS to have a chance. Did the Dawgs really prepare for that?
There have been several injuries to starters that have taken away from the overall talent and depth of the defense.
I expect a better showing by the defense against TCU. TCU will have 9-days to prepare vs. the 5-weeks that OS got.
Just one more game. GOOODAWGS!
UGA shut down UT so it can be done. Everybody knows Stroud is a phenomenal passer in clean pocket. Befuddled why UGA left him alone most of the game. The announcers kept saying the UGA Dline were gassed. I know I had some extra ham over the holidays. But pressure the QB!
Bear hugs eliminate pressure
Barpig. I think it was an evenly called game by the officials. But the officials also “let them play” more than they should’ve, in my opinion. Looked like OS was getting away with a lot of O-line holding. I think that was a part of how they limited the pass rush.
I’d agree, but it was consistent at least. They didn’t seem to hammer one side with penalties and let the other get away with it. As they say in baseball, they called it both ways.
Wasn’t it just last year when you said Bama can’t use injuries as an excuse? NEXT MAN UP, remember? Oh, and you also complain about the refs, classic Dawg response. You mother f u ck e r s are the worst fans on the planet with your hypocrisy. I hope the f u c k i n g plane falls out of the sky with the whole god d a m n team on it, maybe you’ll appreciate what you have right now. F U C K ALL YOU MOTHER F U C K E R S! The rest of the SEC should just assassinate every dawg fan upon sight, that should help! LMAO
Georgia won. Excuses are for losers.
Connor, I have been known to type da m n but will you have your supervisor take a look at the above post by Kirby4Prez? He said he hopes the plane drops out of the sky with the Georgia team on it. Thanks for checking it out.
no problem f u c k face! Here’s wishing you were on it also! Don’t worry though, your kids can call me daddy just like your wife!
Troll. Nobody who ever lived ever said losing starters doesn’t have an effect.
At this point in the season every team has lost starters. Ladd McConkey (GA’s leading receiver) could barely run and played a very limited role against OS. GA also lost TE Washington early in the game. Those loses had a negative effect.
The excuse comes in – when a team loses, and then, some of their fan’s start saying, “We would’ve won if”. I’m sure that sounds familiar to you…
Georgia has delt with injuries all season. Georgia has overcome those injuries. That’s why Georgia is one of only two teams playing a game on 1-9-2023.
Get over it, if you can…
Ok Timmy boy, whatever you say!
“I’m sure that sounds familiar to you…”
I’m sure kids yelling “please don’t f u c k me” sounds just as familiar to you! Please stop m o l e s t i n g children you sick p e r v e r t .
It’s not that serious man.
This^^^
Hard to envision UGA having a third straight underwhelming defensive performance.
Is it?
This is a bad narrative. George’s defense went into the second half of the SECCG up 35 to 10. Everything after that was garbage time. It was a bad performance against Ohio State, but they were also the most complete offense we’ve played by a lot. It’s like the narrative early in the season that we had a bad game against Kent State because we treated them like a cupcake game. The defense against LSU did everything that was expected of them
I’m stunned. I can’t believe any of this for UGA the past two games. I mean in Athens after the TN game Kirby was asked how he stopped TN’s offesnse, especially in teh first half and he said, “We practiced running to the WR’s faster, and specifically for this game in the offseason”. LOL WTH? That was BS when he said than and why we are seeing what we are seeing now in the last two games for UGA. Kirby had no clue why the TN WR’s weren’t getting open or even making the attempt. But he had to say something to give his D credit, even if it was BS LOL.
So why isn’t, “Running to the WR’s faster”, not working now? Because it was bs. lol. UGA’s secondary has always been the reason it has lost games and had it not been for a mercy missed FG, this would have been another. But in all three of those games, LSU, OSU and TN. TN was a home game and the other two mise well have been for UGA. IF these were away games for UGA, well…
This buffoon makes Dawgs2021 look normal.
hardly
salty
What exact strategy is it called when a coach says, “We just ran faster to the WR’s and practiced it all offseason specifically for this game. Your an idiot sir and FL on the end of your screen name confirms it lol. Stay in FL moron..
Imagine making fun of someone for living in a state.
I guess that’s better than your “we didn’t scheme to win” and “heupel lost on purpose”.
gwhite, don’t you get it. Kirby said that just to mess with your head. Not anybody else, just you…
strancharm If you know what offensive scheme your team runs, than you’d know the difference. I doubt you know any of UGA schemes and typical game plans. When you grow up, you’ll start to learn more about these and at what times and games your coach runs them and why. All I’m saying is TN didn’t scheme nor run the same game play that won them 11 games this season. The only other time they ran a scheme like this was against Ball State. A game you intend or hope to win and sacrifice that outcome in order not to reveal your playbook. All the while, you have no since of urgency about the game in coaching, nor in adjustments. It is what it is. It was a sure they hoped to win but not risking anything to win it. Hence Conservative game plan, in a game TN had to give. I know you like to think UGA is just that good on D, especially the secondary but that just isn’t reality and the last few games for UGA have proved it, along with a few others in the regular season. It’s not a slight toward UGA, it just is what it is.
Tim Rupert LOL OK. No, the guy was serious. I can recall the days when he was a youngster playing and he’d say dumb things like that back than too..lol He’s a likeable guy because he said tarded things like this. But Saban would be glad to pull him aside and say, “You didn’t get the same offensive scheme and game plan we did”. lol.
Grow up? You serious? Guarantee you’re younger. Cause you definitely act like it. That’s coming from ga, Florida, Alabama, and VOL fanbases.
“you’re”
My favorite, and I mean ABSOLUTE FAVORITE internet comment is when someone says “Your stupid”.
It says so very much about the writer in only two small words.
It is never a good thing to call someone an idiot when you as a grown, whatever, do not know the difference between you’re and your, even when it is point out to you multiple times.
Winning @GWhite…It is called winning. Real coaches play to win, not to avoid tough games down the road. Guess thats the difference in going to LA or the Orange Bowl lol lol
You can go back to being a FL gator fan next season lol.
Been a vol fan all my life so no need to.
volfanFL Can’t be true.. lol NO one knee pads for a Kirby statement like that.. lol
Well, the missed FG and Ryan Day not getting correct calls to get the ball closer than having a 50-yard FG at the end. From 40 it might have been a Bucknut celebration. We’ll never know.
Well, LSU and Ohio State have really good offenses and so does TCU. I expect a high scoring game. GA needs to stop the penalties, especially pass interference calls.
To me TCU seems a more physical team than UF and OSU a little faster on the offense. Hard to see how this effect this game but I somehow think TCU’s physicality comes into play. Their nifty enough though I think to throw on the secondary of UGA was saw the other night.
Yeah, that would help. For a while there, I thought Bama had made the playoffs and no one had told me.
I hate to say it because I’d love for TCU to pull out the victory, but I think Georgia is going to rip them a new one. I don’t think it’ll be particularly close.
I have said this in the past and will continue to say it: In today’s college football, a truly elite offense will beat a truly elite defense just about every time. The game has changed to benefit offenses more so than defenses.
When Kirby was at Bama, he also struggled when he had to go up against elite QBs and offensive schemes.
Not always. Georgia completely shut down Tennessee this year and their defense and QB were definitely elite.
TN didn’t scheme to throw the ball nor run tempo offense. That is why you got clowned the last two games. TN also outscored you in the final two quarters 10-3. And that was playing to run out the clock..lol. Sorry but the TN game had to do more with TN and their desire to go conservative much more than anything UGA did. The last two games for UGA prove that and the last two games for TN prove it also imo.
Right on cue ^^^^^^^^
clownery.
YOU are the EXACT reason why georgia fans are obsessed with us.
volfanfl, I’m actually a lot more “obsessed” with TCU at the moment.
Poor gwhite…..
volfanFL LOL Says the closet vol fan living in FL lol. I hope it riles them up. UGA fans are the worst. And that pink sound they make in teh crowd when they get a shout out against the cupcakes they play lol. Eric Ainge summed it up well with SB. Last year, it was a feel good story and we were glad for him. Now he’s cocky and insufferable. Hilarious for a guy that will never play in the NFL LOL. And here you have fans like you that carry their *iss buckets. LOL Stop..closet Vol fan living in FL, your embarrassing us..lol
Class of 98 How sad, one UGA fan, obsessed with one team, in one season, in the only sport they are decent in? LOL. Yeah, dude, we’ll let you have that.. LOL
Football is the only thing that matters, and you know it.
And Tennessee doesn’t win championships in the other sports either.
Lol loser
Nothing you ever say is true. You don’t know ANYTHING about the game of football. Only what you can google.
You’re also a habitual liar. Last year you told us you were a kid living in Colorado. Now you’re an old man? What is it?
Only so many teams can schedule Pitt. Didn’t Georgia Tech beat them?
“Also Tennessee outscored you in the final 2 quarters..”
Tell me you know nothing about football without telling me you know nothing about football..
Dude, uga ran the ball every play in the second half to chew clock and keep Tennessee offense off the field. Tennessee got a garbage time td. The game was a complete beat down. The reason is Tennessee is soft af, no physicality at all, just finesse gimmicky scheme. And an o line that should be in hs. Osu and lsu are physical teams who play defense, unlike Tennessee. If you’d ever had the balls to pad up, you’d understand football.
Georgia led at halftime, why would Tennessee go conservative on play calling while losing?
I disagree that Tennessee’s QB is elite. He’s vastly overrated.
Georgia saw an elite QB five days ago. November 5th… not so much.
Stetson Bennett is overrated and garbage tbh.
How’d you like that garbage run he made to the pylon on November 5th? But hey, congrats on beating Missouri and Kentucky or whoever. Great season for Tennessee! Best in decades! Only two embarrassing losses this year! Not bad!
Look man, lets be real. You all have to be impressed with any QB that isn’t SB. I mean if you put even Milton behind your offense, you’ll actually have a decent or good passing scoring offense.. What did you all have, 15 passing TD’s on the regular season? LOL Pathetic. It’s also a good think you have no brain for evaluating talent. You probably think SB is a better QB than Milton. LOL If SB played for TN, he’d be benched by game 2. Data stats are data stats. I might have agreed with you last year about Joe but the beginning of the 21 season was a long time ago. But hey, you can tell us how much JOe is overrated when he’s playing in the NFL and SB is at home watching him. lol
Lol. Joe Milton will not finish next season as the vol starter.
“This just in….Milton’s first thrown pass of the 21 season has just landed. Too bad it was a 10 yard out.”
Tennessee sucks. Just had their best season in over two decades, and it included two embarrassing, humiliating losses.
Tennessee is the minor leagues. Has beens. Living in the past.
But hey, congrats on hanging 60 on Missouri or whatever.
Have fun Monday night.
I am very impressed with many Quarterbacks that aren’t Stetson Bennett. CJ Stroud comes to mind. I am also quite impressed with SBIV however. That OSU game is just the sort of game that the gWhite’s of the world said he could never win. Yet there he was, throw for throw with a first rounder.
You nailed it … it’s so much easier to be a QB and a receiver in today’s game. It’s more like 7 on 7 than what college football used to be. QB’s might as well have flags on their belts and receivers are no longer afraid to go across the middle. That used to be what limited a few great receivers standing out from the rest. Crossing patterns in the past often result in de-cleating events that caused receivers to short arm attempted catches or slow down their route or duck. You rarely if ever see that today. College football has become basketball on grass and that’s not a good thing in my opinion. The days of great defenses winning championships is over. All that being said, UGA has way too much talent to lose to TCU. The only way TCU wins is if Smart gets out coached even worse than he did against LSU and OSU.
Reality check.
Ohio State played lights out.
You have a 1st Rd QB and 2x 1st Rd wide receivers on an elite level team that LOST THEIR LAST GAME and was called SOFT FOR A MONTH BY NATL MEDIA.
Yet LOST AGAIN after playing their hearts out.
How often does that happen?
On a missed game winning FG that would have sent all you mother f u c k e r s running for cover, too often! But go ahead and like you “won” that game, bahahahahahaha!
It was a 50 yard kick. Anyway, nice job against Kansas State in your big NY6 bowl!
Bahahaha, nice job on m o l e s t i n g children this weekend perv! Please stop f u c k i n g little kids, i hope you don’t have any at home.
Roll tears roll
Shut up already
Go fnck yourself chump
^^This^^
(Reality doesn’t really matter here a whole lot on SDS)
All three teams tcu, osu, and lsu are all top 10 teams with great quarterbacks and lights out receivers and great defenses. We’ve been hearing all year about how hard it is to repeat from the opposing fanbases because Georgia would get everyone’s best shot. So when those two teams play lights out and keep it close, now those fan bases act surprised?? I expect tcu to come to play. We all know georgia’s defense is not last years. What we do know, is they have done enough to keep us 14-0. Pretty good.
Reasonable take. But when UGA starts playing harder schedules is when you will get more fans pulling for them to win, this game included. The new nickname for UGA is Clemson of the SEC. Not all your fans are delusional but man you got some on SDS and Uncle Lou’s site..lol. But let’s be real, more than 15 teams could have gone undefeated with your schedule, including TN in the regular season. I think the playoff expansion will help and I know it’s not your fault who you play. But still, people see that schedule of yours this season and next season and shake their heads. Anything less than 12-0 next season would be a fail for UGA. Your hardest game by far is the Vols in Knoxville.
So, you admit there are more than 15 teams better than Tennessee? Duly noted.
gwhite, Georgia played highly ranked teams on their schedule.
Georgia played the best from the West, and they destroyed the No.2 from the East. Alabama wouldn’t have gotten it done. That leaves nobody else in the SEC.
Georgia just beat OS – who has more talent than every CFB team not named Georgia and Alabama. Throw 1-2 more good teams on the schedule, and nothing was going to change.
Time to face the facts. Dawgs are on top, and no amount of wishing is going to change that.
DUDE!! Georgia and Tennessee both played at South Carolina this year! So there might be 14 other teams but TN wasn’t one of them! lmao
BTW Georgia is 14-0 and played the two top offenses in the Nation. In the last two years has wins against Clemson, Oregon, Alabama, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Tennessee!!
And considering Alabama played lsu and tenn and lost (albeit close) and ga won those we can take them outta that 15 as well.
No hate Alabama fans. I actually believe Alabama was top 5. And better than tenn. But the games were played.
They played Oregon, South Carolina, miss state, tenn, lsu, and Ohio state. They deserve being in the championship game over anyone else you could come up with and they have played the best overall this year.
I mean, they beat number 1 pretty convincingly in November and managed to win the SEC.
Lets see here…They had Oklahome next year. Not their doing that isn’t happening though. Clemson is a recurring team on the schedule (you guys seemed pretty happy to beat them). Of course Notre Dame recently in the home and home, Oregon is a solid OOC game, Clemson is back in 24, UCLA in 25 and 26 (home and home). FSU in 27, Texas and FSU in 28, Texas and Clemson in 29 and Clemson and Ohio State in 30. Bama of course will make a few appearances in there however the SEC shakes out. Additionally those Texas games are likely to drop of course but that isn’t because Georgia ducked them like the Vols did Army lol.
Now for the Vols. 2023, Virginia. 2024 Kent? UTEP?, 2025, Syracuse. 2026 Nebraska. 2027, Nebraska. 2028, West Virginia. 2029, Washington (potentially not bad), and 2030 Washington.
Now how many playoff teams are in each of those groups? I see Washington for UT. A few more for the Dawgs. And Clemson and Ohio State in the same season? Meanwhile the Vols hide from the Service Academies lol.
I will never understand why the AD keeps ducking from better teams then what we have currently smh.
So Tennessee “could have” gone undefeated playing Georgia’s schedule — even though they actually lost (badly) to a team on Georgia’s schedule?
Real games count. Hypotheticals don’t.
Well if they played Georgia’s schedule they wouldn’t have to play Georgia, so I guess that erases an annual loss.
UGA has gone 14-0 with a schedule the included Oregon, at South Carolina, at Mississippi St, Tennessee, LSU, and Ohio St.
They only had one game which they really struggled in during the regular season (at Missouri), but they were able to come back and win it.
It’s not Georgia’s fault UK and UF couldn’t hold up their side of the bargain this year, but both of those were bowl eligible teams. And of course they won all the games they were supposed to win with little trouble.
What more do you want?
Ohio State scored a touchdown with 12 minutes left in the 3rd quarter to make it 35-24. For the last 27 minutes of the game, they scored six points.
Yes, Georgia needs to tighten up. But it looks like that process started in the 2nd half of the Peach Bowl.
Yep, at that time, you should have got a targeting call. The refs missed two of them that would have gone against UGA and in any other game, would have went that way. They get the ball after the targeting call and its 42-24 game over for UGA.
Even the rules expert/analyst for the broadcast stated that the hit on Harrison wasn’t targeting. The refs got it right when they picked up the flag.
Not targeting. Shoulder to shoulder.
After the shoulder hit his shoulder the head rebounded away and back into the Georgia defensive back. Not targeting.
I love the imaginary world you live in. Even the replay officials AND Harrison said it was a clean hit. Based on your standards this will be flag football in the next few years. The weak need the rules changed to better suit their inability to keep up.
You’re back to your old self! Welcome, hater, the water is warm.
Interesting that that was around the time Marvin Harrison Jr went down, not that he was doing anything of importance before that…
OSU had by far the best offense UGA faced this year. TCU will be a test, but nothing like OSU.
By ranking, no. TN is and its not even close between OSU and TN. You just got the most aggressive passing schemed game of the season and it was from an offense that was just outside the top ten. lol TCU can throw on par with Ohio State..
Tennessee is nowhere near as difficult to defend as Ohio State bec ause the scheme is simpkified. For whatever reason (talent, choice), the Vols don’t run a complex pro style offense and an elite defense can learn the routes and defend them. This is much harder with a team like Ohio State that has the talent to run a complex NFL style offense. This is why teams that play Tennessee’s style offense never win championships and drop a game or 2.
Every
Single
Year
I think SEC fans tend to shrug off OSU because they are in the Big 10 but the reality is they are the 3rd most talented team in the country who are capable of lighting up any defense when playing well. TCU only played two teams with top 10 talent. Those are Texas and OU and those two grossly underperformed relative to their talent. The rest of the Big 12 are 40th or worse. Michigan is ranked 13th in composite talent which is not remotely close to UGA. History has shown that you need at least top 10 talent to win it all. This doesn’t mean that TCU doesn’t have a shot but they would be a huge outlier.
This could be true of talent but talent only means something when it’s tallied in, “production in scheme”, as a unit. A&M has so many 5 star and talent but without the right schemes. Ryan Day was just out-coached the other day by Kirby. One 7 yard completion on the last drive would have the FG a chip shot. OSU had a great game plan and for all intent purposes won the game from a player’s aspect but conservative play calling on that last drive was just a game defining thing that went against them. Any team that is undefeated has a shot. Any team that only won a game by a team missing a last second FG can lose. I don’t think UGA sleep walked at all this season. They have been consistent in their down play and up plays. 16-6 over UK, 4 point winners over Mizzou and some others things. Games and stats that UGA has had, makes me thing one can’t assume anything about this game.
I think they will. They are different than OSU. TCU is going to run the UGA defensive line ragged, and Jalen Carter is going to be taking a lot of breaks. That is TCU’s game, speed and quickness, they also run a lot to the boundaries that make the D-line pursue. UGA needs to pound them hard to take that speed and quickness away in the second half. In other words, make them want to quit.
Just my opinions of the UGA Defense:
– the LSU game is a bit of an outlier. The game was 35-10 at half. I don’t care how much you preach intensity and what not, when you have a 25 point lead with 2 quarts to go and the playoff ahead. Players and coaches are gonna coast a little. Not saying they don’t want to keep the margin, but play calls and effort tend to be more lax.
– Ohio State has recruited at a top 5 level consistently and is always considered a top 5 team. They have talent for sure. They also did a great job of moving the pocket all night, the other part was Stroud. He reminded me of BY that game. He made something out of nothing multiple times. He was inches away from sacks multiple times and made big throws (also while saying this, you can’t cover for that long. No matter how good the CB is. This is the reason 7on7 competitions have 4 seconds to throw without OL/DL). If he gets sacked on those magician escape plays its a 14 point UGA win. Hats off to him. He earned himself a couple higher draft picks and more money IMO.
-I think UGA will have a plan for Duggan scrambling. Most times these type QB’s you don’t try to sack because it can hurt you on the backend. (That’s why I think Ohio Sate did so well, escaping sacks and UGA didn’t expect Stroud to do that) Also I’m not sure the OL/DL play of TCU is on the level of Ohio State.
Good points. Most of the big gains by LSU were due, in my opinion, to Malachi Starks “cheating” and trying to bait the QB into throwing an interception to him. He could afford to do this due to the big lead. The stats from that game are a bit misleading.
Ohio State simply has some of the best offensive weapons in college football, had a month to prepare, and a huge chip on their shoulder. It happens.
Georgia also held them to six points over the last 27 minutes of game clock.
I think both is true but no one is ever prepared for a guy like Nuss coming in. By all accounts this should have been a nightmare scenario for him to come into a game like that.. But he couldn’t do that to your secondary unless you have sophomores and underclassman running around all over it out there for UGA. OH, wait, that is the case so.. OSU played a very similar game plan as LSU did for the second half. Duggan though is a way more physical runner than Stroud or Daniels. Won’t be sliding much. But TCU will scheme to figure out very early what they will have the most success doing on offense. They remind me of those big physical Nebraska teams of the 90’s. Stroud like Young is very good at Hero ball. This when plays break down and they run for their lives but are very good at finding WR’s last second down field and hit them. Duggan can do this as well. SB does a good bit of this too.
Wow, you should be making millions as a head coach and not spending your time on these boards. You are truly a genius.
The score may have had a little to do with the LSU game but it wasn’t the main factor. Daniels had over 200 yds in the first half and moved it consistently beginning with the opening possession. He was on pace to have a 400 yd game before the score got out of hand.
They won that game by 20 you know.
The point was made is that LSU threw for so many yards because it was a blow out. It was a 14 pt game until 2:48 left in the first half and Daniels threw for 208 in the first half so LSU’s first half passing yards had nothing to do with the score. They threw it well from the opening possession not just when the game was out of hand. You can argue that the second half yards had something to do with the score but I don’t know how you are explaining the first half.
I’m sorry, but didn’t TCU’s defense just give up 45 points to an offense that isn’t as good as Georgia’s led by a QB who couldn’t hold Stetson’s jock?
Y’all are so dumb here at SDS.
Stetson is mid as hell. If you think he is even the best QB TCU has faced this year you’re wrong. UGA will roll all over TCU but thinking Stetson is anything but a mid QB with weapons is a joke. Think Tua with Waddle/Reek.
Facts
Agreed.
When you look at the physical metrics, arm strength, speed, height, etc., I would tend to agree that he is mid-level at best.
But he does have a better than average ability to read the field and coverages. And he has top-tier moxie. Duggan has that too. It’s an underrated trait.
There is, however, only one QB in college football I would take over SB going into this game: Young.
Say what you will about Bennett, he is a proven winner that doesn’t fold.
Hahaha. Cry, cry, cry, you dumb Gump.
If you go by quarterback rating, Bennett is the best TCU has faced.
If you want to debate whether you think Bennett is any good or not fine. But against tcu’s schedule, Bennett leads.
Is Washington going to play? IF not, how does that changes things. TCU is a team that just plays to level of competition. Many teams are this way. UGA included in several games this season. Duggan will play in the NFL, SB will not. Simple as that. Now, if this game gets to a point where its QB against QB and this game has to be won by next level skills, Duggan has an advantage. Stroud vs SB and it was Stroud at the end of the day but a miss FG lost it for OSU. If your in a game that close with OSU and considering what TCU did to Michigan, we can’t assume much about this game. TCU’s only natty was in 1938.
It was not stroud at the end of the day. Stetson was getting td’s, stroud settling for 3!!! field goals at the end of the game and they missed 1. Stroud was a beast! Stet was better.
Hey O’Gara, how many catches did Harrison have after the first quarter?
How many? Bet you don’t know the answer is ZERO.
It’s obvious the Dawgs’ game plan was predicated on the fact that Stroud was not just a reluctant runner, he didn’t hardly run at all over two years as a starting QB. Give Ryan Day credit, they rope-a-doped Georgia by making the QB run a heavy feature in the Peach Bowl.
Guess who does run a lot? Guess how the Dawgs’ defense will be prepared differently for the National Title Game?
Good Lord. So dumb.
I’m not so sure TCU won’t have success running on you. Especially if they get their passing game going. One thing we all underestimated about TCU was their physicality and size and is a big reason why they have defied all the predictions thus far.
Habitual liar says what?
What are you today? Young kid in Colorado or old man who doesn’t know how to use his iPhone?
Osu got their passing game going. But not rushing. Osu and Tcu statistically the same in rushing.
So why will they have success?
Jayden at lsu didn’t. Neither did will rodgers or rattler or Bo pix.
One the new SEC Shorts, UGA is dating Hope again! LOL Yay Hope, for UGA! lol
I’ll take dating Hope vs gwhite dating the Allstate mayhem guy wishing uga wouldn’t win so he could spout more drive-l.
I mean yeah…I hope they are able to win back to back championships. It would be a real accomplishment. Beats the days of hoping the Dawgs could get over the hump. Hope and the Vols seem like a solid fit lol.
Lol, hope gor something TN has never done – back to back nattys.
UGA’s defense doesn’t have to be great. It just needs to get a few turnovers. At the end of the day, TCU is not going to be able to stop UGA. They aren’t going to see UGA fumble on the goal line, nor throw 2 pick 6’s. The worst thing that could have happened to TCU was OSU almost beating UGA. Now they are dialed in and TCU as great of a team as they are doesn’t have the athletes to compete.
Buckeyes had the 5 star talent to hang in until the end against UGA. TCU doesn’t.
UGA by 21+, and I hate saying that for obvious reasons.
It wasn’t 5 star talent that made this game close. It was the difference in offense scheme of OSU vs UGA’s very young secondary. UGA’s secondary for a second game in a row got a little exposed and this would have happened sooner in the season if UGA had a stronger schedule. Always like to know where issues are as early as you can in a season. I could see either team winning this game by 7 or 10. If TCU can run the ball effectively on UGA for 4 yards per carry or more, UGA loses this game. Likewise for UGA if they can.
The complexities of that scheme is why Ohio State gave them all they could handle while Tennessee couldn’t do a darned thing. It is a High School offense…meant to simplify things for the QB. Cool, it does. But that also simplifies things for the defense and Georgia was good enough to capitalize. This is why schools that run Tennessee’s scheme never win championships and always run into someone that shuts them down. It is as constant as the North Star.
Possible intangible factor for TCU. UGA subs a lot. Players get less reps per game. TCU not as deep, has more developed players per game as per game in playing time. If they were to run tempo, it’s a factor. This is what TN did to Bama and has success doing it. So injuries for either team imo will be a huge factor in this game. Rotation guys have only seen so much playing time. This was also why Will Anderson wasn’t a factor for Bama in the TN game. That’s why I think this game is going to be very physical.
Georgia ends TCU’s Cinderella run.
I learned a lot this season.
Tennessee had the scheme…for everyone but Georgia.
Ohio State had the scheme and the players and it showed.
TCU: we’ll see.
But I think Georgia’s best defense against these prolific offenses is that they have one themselves. Long gone is the narrative that Kirby can’t win a shootout. Buckle up, y’all. Go Dawgs!
GWhite said the Peach Bowl wasn’t a shooutout.
Everyone but UGA? Then kindly explain that Carolina boat race?
Wasn’t much of a race. More of a good old smackdown.
Tenn didn’t need to win that game. And they didn’t scheme for it. They were in the playoffs regardless. Right gwhite?
LOL
TCU is not going to be a pushover. They are used to playing from behind so psychologically they will not panic if they do fall behind. I think UGA needs to be a little old school against a quicker team that may be faster overall than UGA. They need to pound the he11 out of them for the first half of the game, to make sure they get a little slower at the end of the game and to make them wish the game was over. I do not think this game is going to be a blowout, I think it is going to be closer than UGA fans want it to be or think it will be. I am pulling for UGA to keep the prize in the SEC, just be a little more humble. Go Dawgs.
That’s a great take on the game. It’s going to be competitive. Michigan got cute early in the game and made the decision to air it out, counter to their identity as a team that pounds the ball down their opponents’ throats. If UGA plays bully football in the run game, they should pull away in the second half. It’s going to take a lot of discipline to do that, though, because TCU’s play against Michigan shows that when they’re well-rested, TCU’s tougher against the run than most people thought, and their offense is tougher to stop than most people thought.
I can’t wait to watch this game.
Michigan wasn’t able to run against the 3-3-5 like they said they’d be able to. I predict Georgia will try. They may very well find success. Furthermore the offense UGA played all season prior to the OSU game (short passes to the Tight Ends, dump offs to the RB’s) match up well. I don’t think you are going to see Georgia play the sort of game they did vs. OSU. OSU forced their hand and fortunately they were up to the task, but I think you are going to see a more traditional Georgia offense vs. TCU and I think it is a good match up.
Bottom Line…I don’t believe that just because Michigan couldn’t do domething vs. TCU tells us much about weather or not Georgia will be able to do those same things. Georgia is better than Michigan.
Agree dawgs2021
Before the semifinal games, I would have bet lunch that UGA and Michigan would both run away with their games and be able to virtually sleepwalk their way to the title game. That didn’t age well.
You never know for sure what you’re going to get from week to week with these teams, and that makes it hard to predict the outcome of a specific game. One thing we’ve seen recently, though, is that TCU’s been able to play a lot tougher than I’d given them credit for, and UGA’s pass defense hasn’t performed nearly as well as I’d been giving them credit for.
I still think UGA has the better team and will pull out a win, but the Dawgs need to tighten things up to make that happen. TCU didn’t get to the title game on a fluke. UGA’s in for a fight.
It will absolutely be a fight. I haven’t seen any quit all year from TCU in the games I saw. They certainly will come ready to put it all on the field on Monday.
It should be a great game. I hope the Dawgs come to play and pull off the win.
Probably. Is it fair to be concerned about the TCU defense based on their last 2 games? Probably.
Exactly!
For perspective, in the last 2 games which seems to be giving everyone fits, TCU is 1-1 and gave up 76 points to Michigan and Kansas State. Georgia is 2-0 and gave up 71 to LSU and Ohio State.
Additionally, Georgia scored 92 while TCU scored 79. Some of you are acting like TCU has been 2019 LSU on Offense and the 1985 Chicago Bears on defense in the postseason.
Georgia defense is running on fumes with injuries and fatigue from the year. But I think they’ll be good enough on Monday night.
TCU does not match up well against the Georgia D. I predict all concerns about the defense wil evaporate by halftime.
Pretty sure that GWhite is actually ChatGPT. Some coder with a sense of humor fed every Tennessee troll message board comment over the last 10 years into it…and here we are. Only a machine could could have absolutely zero humility after the ass spanking that Tennessee took from UGA and USCe.
i wish the posts were about real facts and real opinions instead of trying to denegrate the other teams some of which are not even playing in this next game monday
it is obvious that the dogs are not the chicago bears of 85 defense but the real question is why all of the sudden they look less than great in the back end
i do think that the osu line held carter and it was not called but i cannot make excuses for ringo losing containtment too often
the tsu is centainly not the chicago bears defense of 85 so seems that smart must play milton a lot more since he is far away the best running back and mac should be there for swing passes and start the game throwing short to bowers to see is tsu can really tackle which i am not sure they can
michigan seemed to lose concentration but still threw deep and make long gains so i think the dogs can do this especially if number 11 is used correctly
stetson has a 4 leaf clover and i hope it stays with him for one more game but i will have a lot less fear next year with a QB who can see over the line
this wr quenten johntson seems like a real problem to guard but i doubt he is = to harrison so dogs will win if they play with guts which i think they have now they have seen the risk of not being up to speed
one other item as a dog fan we have zero interest in tennessee at this time
why do you keep calling them tsu?
Shh. He’s on a roll….
I enjoy the point where people mention JD had 200 + yards in the first half.
How many points?
Thank you. That’s all.
Keep the turnover margin under two. That’s the only consistent stat in every UGA loss since the 2018 SECCG. Even OSU couldn’t beat Kirby with “just” a plus-1 TO margin. Do that, and the chances of a repeat are very, very high.
It’s gonna take elite play from TCU to stay in the game and have a chance to win. Their OL will have to play the game of their lives.
