Archie Manning addresses rules that keep Stetson Bennett out of College Football Hall of Fame
Archie Manning presented Stetson Bennett with the Manning Award on Monday, as the Georgia quarterback received the only award that includes postseason performances.
Since Bennett won his second straight national championship, there has been talk about him getting into the College Football Hall of Fame. However, current rules would keep Bennett out because he’s not a first-team All-American.
Manning said that the idea “has been kicked around” by the National Football Foundation, but didn’t offer further details.
Archie Manning says on Zoom today that “it has been kicked around” addressing the @NFFNetwork requiring college hall of famers to be first-team All-Americans. As it stands, that means Stetson Bennett, among a handful of qbs ever to win consecutive natties, would not be eligible.

Along with the Manning Award, for example, Bennett won several other notable honors, including consecutive national championships and offensive MVP honors in all 4 Playoff games.
Am I the only one that hates calling them “natties”?
It’s just a shortcut, like typing UGA instead of Georgia. It’s part of the Internet now, all these shortcuts. I sometimes have to google an abbreviation to find out what it means.
Yeah “natties” sounds low IQ or low class, juvenile. Like an uptight white trying to be hip.
I use the acronym NC or NC’s unless I’m trying to be facetious or sarcastic
I use every edition* (take note on the word usage SDS) of the words “National Championship”, it literally just depends on what other people are using and what words I wake up and feel like using. LOL
*joke was based on a previous article where the word addition was horribly butchered and changed to edition
I do it because I am lazy. Typing with a laptop on your chest, while laying on your bed surrounded by dogs can get tiring. After all language has one purpose, and that is to communicate. If you know what natty means, then language has done its job.
Hate it.
Although I use the term sometimes it does seem to cheapen what it represents. And it also sometimes reminds me of Natty Light which is one of the worst beers ever and should never be thought of when discussing a champion.
When someone says natty, I think of Natural Light.
What’s more natural than that?
Suggest you try to get over it. Life’s too short… Find something more worthy of your hate…
As a fan of Red Tide and Ducks, you won’t need to worry about associating that word with either team over the next decade.
I believed the two(2) words, National Championship mean a lot. To refer a National Championship as a Natty seems to diminish the true meaning. But in today’s world of Twitter/Instagram/etc. so many words have been cut short to save the number of characters in a post. I must admit that I have used the word Natty in a few posts, but henceforth will use National Championship since it describes the event itself & conveys what it really means.
“believe”…an oops.
I sometimes use NC if the context makes it clear what I’m referring to. I never use “natty” to refer to the National Championship.
It also reminds me of the terrible beer we used to drink in college every weekend.
Stroh, Old Milwaukee, PBR
It was if the tap was directly in the horse’s bladder
“Natural Light”. Who could forget.
With UGA’s beatdown of TCU in the Natty, it could be called a Natty Light.
In the early 80’s at UGA they used to have dollar pitcher night (as in $1 for a full pitcher) once a week at a place I think it was called the Odyssey. They were serving Natty Light and the hangovers were brutal. Lol.
If you were originally a walk on and transferred to a junior college and come back and are third or fourth string on the depth chart and get some starts and take over as starter and then win back to back National Championships… you more than deserve to be in the CFB HOF. Even if they don’t let Stetson in, he’s still a HOFer.
Hall of Fame membership is based on excellent play, not having the best personal story.
Stetson has both.
thadec has neither
4 straight MVP honors in the most important games of the year. Back to back National Championships and SEC Titles. That is great play, you dunce.
stetson won and that’s impressive but he was also 5 years older than his average competition and consistently played on one of the (if not the most) talented team in the country every year. he wasn’t a difference maker, like vince young, tim tebow archie griffin, herschel walker, etc. he was a solid player with incredible circumstances
Man, Kirby should recruit the nursing homes, imagine what an 80 year old could do!
I just checked the tape of that 4th quarter against Bama in last years NC game. Clutch. And I checked the tape on the 2nd half against Ohio State from 3 weeks ago. Clutch. He earned MVP honors in those games and the other 2 CFP games he played in. By the way, Tebow couldn’t carry Stetson’s jock. Maybe the most overrated CFB player of all time.
tebow was a 3 time heisman finalis, actually won the award, was an all-american and accounted for 143 touchdowns. stetson shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same sentence as tebow lol
So Chris Wenke winning the Heisman at 28 years old shouldn’t stand. Bennett was eligible and based on his performance should be able to receive any and all rewards!
If being the guy who plays the most important position on the field for back to back National Titles doesn’t qualify you for the hall of fame, there shouldn’t be a hall of fame.
You’re not. That irritates the heck out me.
Stetson Bennett is a solid QB for being 27. But his success it totally geared around that team. He had a few individual plays but let’s be real. He wouldn’t start for any Pac-12 team because of how teams need a solid QB to be decent.
You could have Tom Brady and still get beat by Utah. STFU and win something chump…grown folks are talking here.
Dumbest, most inaccurate post of the new year.
LMAO not a USC fan talking *insert skull emoji here*
Stetson Bennett had a Homeric career at Georgia.
Why would he or anyone who loves him want to taint that story with an unmerited, asterisked award.
I have a hard time believing Bennett wants it that way.
Oh the irony, wins 2 National Championships in two years as a starter, doesn’t qualify, Peyton can’t beat Florida in four years, no problem.
manning didn’t have brock bowers and historically great defenses
