Drew Brees, former Saints QB, calls coaching against LSU facing family: 'You love them, but you're trying to beat them'
Drew Brees sees the Citrus Bowl as a Louisiana family affair. The legendary New Orleans Saints quarterback is serving as an interim assistant coach for Purdue, his alma mater, against LSU in the Citrus Bowl. Spending all those years in Louisiana, Brees came to adopt LSU as “family.”
As a Boilermaker assistant, Brees sees Monday’s game as a backyard football game. LSU is family, but family that Brees wants to beat, he told reporters during a Saturday press conference.
Drew Brees pulled for #LSU while living in Louisiana and still has connections there. Even rehabbed after surgery this spring with Beau Lowery.

He equated this to a backyard football game at the holidays where you want to beat your family.

Brees says that the Citrus Bowl is just a one-off for coaching, helping Purdue during a transition.
