Mike Leach is soon set to have a new boss at Mississippi State.

John Cohen, the university’s athletic director since 2016, informed school officials of his resignation on Monday afternoon and will reportedly take the same post at Auburn.

Cohen, of course, hired Leach from Washington State ahead of the 2020 season, where Leach set up camp 3 years after his firing from Texas Tech. It’s no secret that there’s no love lost between him and those in Lubbock as Leach feels that he was unfairly pushed out following the Adam James incident.

Leach, during his Monday press conference, was asked about his relationship with Cohen, and he responded with his typical humor.

“I thought John was great. Got along good with John…I’m surprised this happened. I’m not surprised something surprising happened,” he said.

He then provided a humorous pitch to Cohen’s successor, with some names with MSU ties already being discussed among insiders.

“It’s a great place. It’s not perfect. I would definitely purge a couple, but not very many which is less than most places,” he said.
