Carson Beck, your time to earn Georgia's 'QB1' title has (finally) arrived
So here’s a wild thought.
Carson Beck is the same recruiting class as Bryce Young. As in Young, who soon might end up being the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft after 2 years of solidifying himself as one of the best college quarterbacks of the 21st century. Beck was committed to Alabama until flipping to Georgia in March ahead of his senior season.
Another wild thought? Beck is only a year younger than Bo Nix. As in Nix, who will be the ultimate “HOW DOES HE STILL HAVE ELIGIBILITY?!” guy in 2023 when he’ll be in Year 5 as a college starter (the 2020 COVID season is how he still has eligibility).
That title used to belong to Stetson Bennett IV. The 25-year-old is, last I checked, finally out of eligibility. That means it’s finally Beck’s turn to become Georgia’s QB1.
Don’t get it twisted. I’m not saying it’s a given that Beck wins the job. Brock Vandagriff and Gunner Stockton will have a say in that. If Kirby Smart recruited a transfer portal quarterback, I don’t think it would be a stunner, though that could depend on how he feels about Beck.
Remember, Georgia didn’t sign a quarterback in its 2023 class (yet) after whiffing on the Arch Manning sweepstakes. That’s rare in this era for an elite program, as is having a trio of former blue-chip recruits in a quarterback competition. If Beck (or anyone) assumes it’s his job simply because he has the most experience running Todd Monken’s offense, I think that’d be disrespectful to Vandagriff and Stockton.
But at the same time, this is everything that Beck has been waiting for.
There’s no longer a more established veteran (Bennett) or a more promising transfer portal quarterback (JT Daniels or … Jamie Newman) blocking the path to starting. There’s a chance to start for what’ll likely be the preseason No. 1 team in America.
What more can you ask for?
This is why Beck stayed in Athens instead of seeking another opportunity. For a guy who essentially played exclusively in garbage time, Beck was fortunate to get 35 pass attempts on just 89 snaps in 2022. He even had a pass play called on 1st down up 39 against Oregon. Dating to the spring game, every bit of live action that we saw from Beck suggested that he’s more than capable of filling the ginormous shoes left by Bennett. In 7 games in 2022, he completed 74% of his passes for 8.9 yards per attempt with 4 touchdowns and 0 interceptions.
Even his incompletions showed promise:

That Vandy game was the best of Beck’s career, though he wasn’t even the headliner that day because Arik Gilbert had his first (and last) catches in a UGA uniform.
Beck has a leg up on Vandagriff, who has yet to record a completion on 3 attempts in 2 years at the FBS level. In 2022, Vandagriff was clearly QB3 based on his 11 snaps, which included 2 incomplete passes and 1 rush for 7 yards. I say that not to knock the former 5-star recruit, who certainly presents a more mobile option for UGA, but I think it’s important to remember that reps carry more weight than coach-speak about a non-starting quarterback.
Speaking of coach-speak, here’s what Smart said about Beck after that aforementioned Vandy performance (via Rivals).
“Carson’s done a nice job. He studies and, as is always the case with the backup quarterback, they’ve got to be prepared for every game,” Smart said in October. “They don’t know if things will happen and if they’ve got to go in. He does a really good job doing that, and I think we do a really good job of managing his reps and getting him the looks he needs to prepare and develop.”
Smart added that Beck “has done everything we’ve asked of him.”
What Georgia is about to ask of its 2023 starter is to make sure the program doesn’t take a step back after what I’d consider the best offense in school history (look a little closer at the numbers if you disagree with that). Between Brock Bowers, AD Mitchell, Ladd McConkey, Rara Thomas and Dominic Lovett, Georgia’s most proven offensive unit is the pass-catchers. The program who finally had its first top-40 passing offense of the post-Aaron Murray era should continue to function as a versatile, explosive unit who can adjust based on game flow and/or what a defense is giving up.
Smart has typically ignored recruiting star rankings and rewarded loyalty with his quarterbacks. At the same time, he’s about as vague as it gets when it comes to tipping his hand on all things quarterback hierarchy. This is the same guy who wouldn’t even outwardly commit to Jake Fromm as his QB1 to start 2018 after he led the program to its first national championship berth since the Herschel Walker era. We shouldn’t expect that to change.
What’ll likely change by September is the dynamic in the Georgia quarterback room. Right now, Beck deserves to be considered the favorite. Maybe spring will change that. It’d be surprising if Beck, Vandagriff and Stockton were all still on the roster by Sept. 2 when the Dawgs host UT-Martin. Perhaps for the first time, we’ll even see Smart carry a quarterback battle into the regular season. That’s the benefit of having UT-Martin in the opener.
But even in the likely event that Smart plays this close to the vest, Beck is in the most favorable spot he could be for a Year-4-to-be guy who doesn’t have a career start. Quietly this season, he took an important step closer to an ideal situation. Dare I say, Beck’s time might finally be coming.
Well, that’s assuming Bennett really is out of eligibility. I’ll believe it when I see it.
He looked good for the final 13 minutes of the NC game. That throw on 4th and 5 was perfect.
I guess we’ll learn if he can hold up for 60 minutes and perform consistently for 12+ games. On the plus side for him, it’s the easiest cream-puff schedule UGA has had in a while. So, he will have time to learn and grow as QB1.
Isn’t it interesting that the Georgia fans will celebrate at the Golden Corral…
Snaggle tooth buffoons…
I’m a Georgia fan. I don’t go to Golden Corral. Ever.
But, whatever delusion makes you happy, go for it.
Doggie 2021…
Isn’t it interesting that Tennessee has won more Championships than Georgia. Tennessee is more historic and successful than the barkers from GA.
Sorry… but true.
The most historic and successful programs in this league from 1900 to 2022 are the following 3 universities…
1)Alabama
2)Tennessee
3)Auburn
Ooops…
OdummyPeaceUGA…
Isn’t it interesting all the Golden Corrals and Chucky Cheese Restaurants in Georgia…
Oh my…
At least your team won with a 25 year old who should NOT be playing with 18 year olds…
Get a life… buttercup!
Never knew porto-potty cleaners were known as “Biomedical Engineers” in Tennessee. That’s pretty clever.
Isn’t it interesting that Georgia has more all-time wins than Tennessee? And Auburn…
Isn’t it interesting that our super old quarterback is just 2 months older than Hendon Hooker?
Isn’t it also interesting that the other thing that’s 25 years old is Tennessee’s last national title.
Isn’t it interesting that Tennessee actually has more championships and a higher winning percentage…
Ooops…
Lol!
Man, that 10-win season to nowhere sure has you Hillbillies feeling a certain way, doesn’t it? You know what we see when we look at y’all?
Losers. Hah!
Have fun with a 9-3 record next season
Tennessee 40-20 Georgia
Name the three UGA losses please.
I’m a Gator, and I hate it, but their floor is 11-1, and that’s only if they lose in Knoxville.
Even if they did, they have accomplished something over the past 2 seasons that Tennessee never has and is nowhere close to. Love how Vol fans try to interject themselves into the elite level of the sport in spite of results. Same with Basketball and Baseball. You did it in the 90’s when you proclaimed yourself as the Gators’ “big rival” even though the owned you. Now here you are trying to put your team at the UGA/Bama level in spite of being excited over a season that those 2 teams would consider a massive disapointment. You have beaten Bama once in 15 years. Georgia has owned your for 6. You aren’t any better against Florida. It is always “we coming”. Fine…The Bama’s and UGA’s will be waiting if you ever arrive. GWhite says people hate UGA fans because they are arrogant. Fine, but at least the team has performed. For the Vols…1998 but you bump your gums like you are coming off of sustained success versus being a total laughing stock for 20+ years.
I’m not reading all that
It’s hard to imagine losing 3 games next season. Have you seen our cupcake schedule?
I mean, it could happen. That just seems very, very unlikely.
Sorry. I ask too much from Vols I guess. Let me distill it down for you. Your fanbase likes to think of your program as being on a much higher level than the results indicate. Was true in the 90’s. Is true today.
you mean “can’t read all that.” congrats on another mid season with your poverty program :)
20+ years since 98 is still about 15 shy of 1980. Heads have swollen big time.

it’s been 25 years since UTjr mattered. no one (clearly not recruits…) cares about your old claimed natties from your grandpa’s time lmao
Imagine that, coming from a Hillbilly, I guess that should have been predictable.
You’ve got your share of inbreeds idiot. Take a canoe down the chatooga.
I’m not reading all that
more issues with the internet?
I guess I get that…it was pretty new back in 1998 lol
Idiot
1998
SMD
27-13
Y’all aren’t near as entertaining as Coozie/Hailz/Aargh. Take some pointers from them.
“Isn’t it interesting that the Georgia fans will celebrate at the Golden Corral…”
What???????
Tennessee thought they were actually good because they scored a lot of points against no defenses. They are who we thought they were. Came to Athens and got choked out. Same exact thing will happen next year.
Stetson finished his career with back to back titles, 1 loss in 2 years, and with a 17 game win streak. Carson comes in with a very gentle schedule but that’s still a ton of pressure and expectations to pick up! South Carolina, Florida, and Ole Miss should be wins if we are who we expect to be, but those will certainly be tests for him. Tennessee is the play in for ATL so he’ll have all season to sharpen up and create his own legacy.
Hillbillies in play for nothing except maybe 8 wins and a Gator Bowl.
They were 2021 Michigan State in 2022. Their 2023 is going to be 2022 Michigan State.
Lots of talk for a team that’s going to turn out 9-3 next season.
23-17
6 in a row
1998
Lots of talk from you for a team that put up all of those numbers. Georgia may be 9-3. Doubt it, but it could happen. Doesn’t change anything they have done. Note that phrase…Have done. What have the Vols done?
Serious question. Is it more likely the Vols or the Dawgs go 9-3 next year. (or worse for the Vols maybe). Let’s ask Vegas!
Not going to matter when we kick y’all arses next season.
Yawn. You said that this year…and last year…and the year before…and…well you get the point. And yet…
1998
When was the last season Georgia lost 3 games? I’ll hang up and listen.
BTW, I noticed you had no answer for the “Have Done” question. Typical. Vols always want to sit at the grown ups table lol. Nope, back to the kiddie table.
Since you guys won 1 title and waited 40 years, this time you won 2, is the next drought 80 years?
Maybe. Then again maybe they 3 peat. All we know is that Tennessee’s drought is a bout to turn 25 which is half of what it was in 1998 lol
The UGA QB room is still stacked. They may have the best trio in the country. It will be interesting to see if one transfers out.
It would be pretty surprising not to.
If Brock or Gunnar take a redshirt I doubt they will as long as Kirby doesn’t recruit a transfer and hands them the keys, which he won’t.
“They may have the best trio in the country.”
And this is based on …?
I would imagine that a ton of QB rooms have two 4 star recruits and a 5 star, with 2 of them in-state guys and the 3rd from a border state. Bonus points for the fact that the 2 in state guys played for rural high schools at lower classifications that don’t produce very many FBS prospects.
Stay salty.
OK. Tell me what I said wasn’t true. This guy claims that Carson Beck, Brock Vandagriff and Gunner Stockton are “the best QB room in the country” when they have completed 30 passes between them and only has a single top 150 recruit. Meanwhile, the Texas QB room is going to have Quinn Ewers, Arch Manning plus Maalik Murphy (6’4″ dual threat QB with a cannon arm) who while 4 star was a higher rated recruit AND a better athlete than either Stockton or Beck.
There is also the Oregon QB room which includes Bo Nix (5 star in his 5th year), Ty Thompson (5 star in his 3rd year) and Austin Novosad (4 star top 100 guy from Texas who – see this pattern here? – is taller and has a stronger arm than Vandagriff and Stockton).
We can also talk about the QB rooms at Michigan. Ohio State. UCLA. USC. Clemson. LSU. And a bunch of other places that have more than a single top 100 recruit on their QB depth chart AND guys on their depth chart that have thrown more than 60 college passes.
So either I am salty … or you know nothing about college football other than your own team. Considering your handle it is likely the latter.
how does that novel change the fact that you simply dislike Georgia and are salty over their recent success
thadec Makes some great points. Only UGA fans and delusional media pumps players up who have done absolutely nothing. You might have the three worst QB’s in the SEC from a production standpoint. Especially when you look at UGA’s offense. It’s not dynamic, it’s TE dependent and lacks elite WR production. Under 20 passing TD’s for the regular season. Astounding when you see how weak UGA’s regular season schedule was.
Wow. You are a sad little fellow.
Yeah. I am sad for not believing that 2 guys who weren’t top 100 recruits and a redshirt freshman 5 star who played small high school ball, none of whom have a single college start to their name, is “the best QB room in the country” just because some UGA fan says that it is.
Pardon me, but in 2017 the Alabama QB room included THREE QBS WHO WOULD TAKE NFL TEAMS TO THE PLAYOFFS (1st round picks Tua and Mac Jones and NFL MVP Jalen Hurts) and the Ohio State QB room was so stacked that Joe Burrow had to transfer out for playing time! Yet I am supposed to believe that UGA has the best QB room in the country because … you say so.
I made no such claim little one.
And I said, may have. You intentionally quoting me incorrectly to make a point is again, very GWhite’ish.
Thadec is also a liar like gwhite.
Hmm. Maybe he’s another of gwhite’s alters?
Corch Get a job. You are a grown man acting the way you are.
Corch Irvin Meyers 2.0 More crying ..again. Man I live in your head lol. Does your wife scream my name instead? LOL
thadec What can I say, your right on all these accounts. Now, you will be hated for it by more delusional UGA fans. Just ask them the last time they put a QB in the NFL that starting or really even playing? Despite being relevant since 17? That triggers them. Especially Corch.
You seem to imagine lots of things. Very GWhite’ish. Not good.
Dude, compare your own QB room to UGA’s and you will understand why I say this.
The LSU QB room looks great. We may indeed have the best room. Can’t leave out the, “may” part of this.
I was right about LSU last season. Was right about TN as well. Don’t get mad because I prove you wrong weekly. lol.
I’m confused. Matt Hayes said Beck was going to transfer to the Gators.
Anthony Richardson will win a National Title at the University of Florida.
— Matt Hayes
concerning vandagriff, he’d really prefer to stay close to home.
fortunately clemson and sc don’t have a question as to who the starter will be at qb. keep an eye on aub. freeze has made a big push.
I think Auburn and UF still need QB’s. I thought there was a good possibility that Nuss from LSU would go to one, even though I definitely hope he stays. We shall see.
Nuss under Huge Freeze at Auburn? Omg, that would be an instant threat to any team they played. LSU would be dumb to pick Daniels over Nuss imo. I like Daniels but he’s more prone to injury and Nuss impressed against UGA.
I haven’t seen/read/heard of any news regarding Freeze, and Vandagriff.
Smart also talked after the national championship game about how Bennett has changed the way he (Smart) evaluates QBs. Smart now sees QB mobility as a more important factor. I haven’t seen a lot about Beck’s mobility or lack thereof, but it could become a factor in spring camp.
That said, Beck does seem to be the top candidate, based on the fact that he has consistently been first in after Bennett.
I mean it’s win-win no matter who Smart goes with:
-Mr. Florida Football
-The hometown hero 5Star
-The most productive player in Georgia HS history
Those are our choices. We’re in a good spot
In what will always be a historic What If? moment, I remember there being a lot of talk that Beck would replace JT Daniels last year and not Bennet. Then, Beck’s personal QB coach decided to go on a radio show and announce Beck had been named the starter even though there had been no official announcement.
End result? No starting job for Beck, who ends up in the doghouse, and the Bennet legend begins!
I might be alone on this one. But THIS season, I think all three QBs stay. Brock is a true sophomore this year, with a RS year still available (if he hasn’t taken it). Stockton is a True Freshman.
If Beck does win the job and has a great year and leads UGA to a good year, he’s gone to the NFL I’d imagine. Then it’s Vandagriff vs Stockton both with multiple years of eligibility left. Brock doesn’t strike me as someone who needs to play right away, I don’t know about Gunner, but he as more eligibility to play with.
Your time to lose to SC has arrived. As is tradition…
That’s one tradition I would like for us to forsake.
I would like to start a new tradition: win ’em all! We’ve had the inaugural event this year. It’s only right to continue.
(seriously, I don’t think it’s likely that UGA will go undefeated this year)
I don’t know if they will, but it’s very likely.
By undefeated I meant 15-0. Like this year.
UGA has decentish odds to go 12-0.
There are some QB rooms around the country that look stacked just like Georgia’s. And like GA fans we sit with our fingers crossed that they remain that way.
Not the Vols though
Um WHAT??
Joe Milton
Nico Iamaleava
Tayven Jackson
We ARE stacked. Although Tayven might leave this year, still doesn’t make you any less of an idiot.
Joe Milton..lololololololol
That’s almost as bad as that other clown doofus bringing Bo Nix into this conversation.
Y’all need to get a grip
LSU has better.
Joe Milton has a proven track record of poor play against any team with a pulse.
Um…
Clemson?
He said a pulse
Lol…good job in your consolation game. You know South Carolina deserves the Orange Bowl trophy though
He beat down a team your offense didn’t score a point on. lol C’mon dude. Plus, you think UGA could have scored 52 on Bama in any year let alone doing in year two under a coach? LOL OSU isn’t even TN or Bama offensively and isn’t good defensively, ground or air.
That was like 2 years ago. We gonna talk about what UGA did to the Vols that same year? Additionally, they won a National championship that season, the first of 2 in a row. And for Tennessee…
1998
DGD82 Oh we got stupidity here..lol JOe Milton and Bo Nix will play in the NFL. SB will only see it from his TV screen..lol UGA is a school that knows next to nothing about developing QB’s. couldn’t even manage a top ten passing scoring offense with a 25 year old in his six year. Half the passing TD’s any school had in the top 10 lol. All this with the 75th ranked SOS..smh. There is what UGA is good at teaching (Ground D) and there is what they aren’t. Offense, particularly passing offense.
SBIV has more rings in the past 2 years than the Vols have in the last 50 lol. IDid the Vols ever beat him lol lol
Dude, your stupid lol. Nico is better than any QB UGA has ever gotten. This guy is #2 in the nation and Joe Milton has the attributes to have NFL schemes built around him. TN has a massive advantage in the QB department over UGA. You got no clue whose even your backup to your newby. lol
“your stupid”
Very ironic of you.
Beck should be at the top of the list. He has grown, improved and looked good in limited snaps this year, whereas he looked lost in previous tries. He has a cannon for an arm and is big, mobility though, not so much.
To me out of the three, he looks the best. But he should be a little more beefed up with all the waiting he has done.
beck is a 4 star QB with excellent arm talent but it worries me that smart made the statement in last few hours that mobility is vital
is he trying to say he will look for portal QB after these 3 guys have been loyal to georgia beck for 3 and brock for 2 and gunner 1
if the offensive line is = to this year any QB has 5 seconds sometimes 9 seconds to find a reciever so i think beck or brock can win the NC since the weakness of the dogs this year will be fixed below
edge rushers are being replaced by 5 stars
new DBs will have glasses and ball skills not just fast and big like ringo who may be great in the NFL if they can get him to watch the ball in the air
bear alexander is going to be = to jordan davis and the 2 linebackers pop and mondon are going to be = to the chicago bears of 85 next season
which ever QB we have will be taller so nik saban will not be able to block the pass in the line
Beck and vandergriff made it pretty clear they want to stay at UGA … Stockton asking Kirby to ditch the non contact jersey to play max Duggan gives me pretty good feeling he ain’t goin no where .. and don’t worry Kirby has a couple more walk in’s if none of them pan out
It has been 8773 Days since Tennessee last won an NCAA Football Title.

Rent free.
I have you so worked up that you keep posting this on every single article.
We’re about to take away the only sport your good in..lol Your already panicking about next season, where, again, for the entire regular season, they’ll talk about how great our offense and team is. How in short order we’ve accomplished so much and UGA fans will be jelly again..lol You have no chance in Knoxville next season. AU might give you a game beforehand as well. How’d your baseball team do again? How about your basketball team? LOL
A lot of smack talk from Vol fans. The Vols who have lost 6 straight to the Dawgs and got thoroughly dominated in the game this year.
How about beat Ga this decade before showing such misguided cockiness.
Let us know if and when you ever beat us for a decade straight.LOL. You ain’t winning in Neyland in late November. Of course we talk smack, we’re used to winning in multiple sports unlike UGA.. lol Dznutz unclenutz. lol
Dawgs are only 2 years away from equaling the Vols 8 game streak in the 90s.3 to break it so we will break it in 2025 since Vols aren’t beating the Dawgs any time soon.
I’ll admit the Vols kicked our as s badly in the 90s
This will be interesting. A true passer with NFL potential finally getting his shot. He’ll get all the physical bumps any rookie gets in his first season and hopefully he’s healthy and playing by the time the TN UGA game comes around. Huge Freeze I think with Auburn will give him a good measuring stick when they play before coming to Knoxville. Question is does the offensive scheme around him change for UGA. It should. This isn’t a dual, he’s a pocket passer. I think he beats out the other two QB’s for QB1.
From this season, it’s pretty clear that Beck is next up.
I hope he can solidify his position from spring to fall.
I am fatigued second-guessing coach Smart on these decisions.
It would seem he knows more than I who the quarterback should be.
=)
