Josh Heupel promotes Tennessee assistant to offensive coordinator position
Tennessee has its new offensive coordinator. Josh Heupel has promoted quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle to OC, the program announced Thursday.
In their 2 seasons at Tennessee, Heupel and Halzle have coached a record-breaking Volunteers offense.
“Joey has been instrumental in our record-setting offensive success over the past two seasons, and he’s built great trust within our team,” Heupel said via a program release. “I have known Joey for over 15 years, and his track record of player development has impacted every place he has been. He has complete knowledge of our aggressive offensive identity and principles. Having played and coached at this level, he understands how to connect with players and will continue to make a significant impact in recruiting. This will be a seamless transition for him as we strive to build a championship program that Vol Nation is proud of.”
Halzle got his coaching start in 2009 at Oklahoma as a quality control when Heupel was the quarterbacks coach. The 2 have continued to work together at Utah State, Missouri, UCF and Tennessee.
“I am grateful to Coach Heupel for this opportunity, and I look forward to building on the dynamic offensive success we have achieved thus far,” Halzle said via UT. “Our offense will continue to be the attacking, sophisticated and up-tempo unit that Vol Nation is accustomed to, while maximizing the potential we have as a team and individually. I have great appreciation for our players and want them to fulfill their aspirations at Tennessee. It’s our job as teachers to put them in a position to be successful—on and off the field—and have fun while doing it.”
Halzle replaces Alex Golesh, who left to take the USF head coaching job before UT’s Orange Bowl win over Clemson. Halzle will continue to coach quarterbacks as Tennessee’s OC.

Works for me. Although I am disappointed Coach Heupel did not check with me first. LOL
I think he made a believer out of you over the last few years. I was optimistic when Josh was hired but didn’t have us winning quite 11 games this season. This hire is very good because Halzle imo is a better QB developer than Golesh and Milton’s accuracy improvement has everything to do with Halzle.
This is pretty much what we all thought. Halzle has been with Heupel for a long time. Golesh not nearly as long and I’m confident he might even be more keyed in than Golesh for the offense, and that wouldn’t surprise me. Halzle has a great understanding of the Tempo Spread offense and this higher is a good indication that as long as Heupel is the HC at TN, this style of offense is here to stay. Some new OC hiring with other schools, much of the time there is a change in scheme that the new OC brings and mostly why they hire a new OC. Not the case here as it’s more of keep the system flowing in the only system of offense we’ll run. I think he’ll do a great job and excited about what additions he brings to our style of offense.
Good, let’s roll.
