Bobby Petrino reportedly making move to SEC as an offensive coordinator
Bobby Petrino is on the move again.
Only weeks after the former Missouri State coach accepted a job as the new UNLV offensive coordinator under Barry Odom, Petrino is headed back to the SEC, according to ESPN. Jimbo Fisher is finalizing a deal to hire Petrino as his OC at Texas A&M and Petrino will take over play-calling duties, Chris Low of ESPN reported. Petrino is considered one of the top offensive minds in football and was briefly OC at UNLV after he spent the last 3 seasons at Missouri State.
Petrino has a colorful and well-known career history.
In 2007, he had a stint as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL ranks before he returned to the college game as Arkansas’s head coach from 2008 to 2011. He was Western Kentucky’s coach in 2013 and then was back at Louisville from 2014 to 2018.
Petrino’s overall record as a college head coach is 137-71.
There is going to be an overabundance of arrogant on that sideline. I can just see the fireworks now when Jimbo gets mad at Petrino and yells at hum on the sideline. The switchblades will come out.
Yes, because Saban has never had an overabundance of arrogance (including himself) on the sideline. Sheesh, y’all’s anti-A&M fetishes have gotten weird.
Saban wins….he has earned the right to be arrogant….but dumbo? Not so much, I can see it now, Petrino calls a play Dumbo says no we are not gonna do that, we are gonna do this, Petrino says screw this and Dumbo takes over permanently.
Jimbo is one of 5 active coaches with a National Championship. We are two years removed from a 1-loss season and a final ranking of #4. You don’t do those things without a little arrogance. We had a horrible year last year, but to act as if that is Jimbo’s standard is factually incorrect and plain moronic. With others its simply “winning” and “good coaching”, but Jimbo in this fantasy conjecture it will be “an overabundance of arrogance”. Does anyone on this site have a remotely neutral take?
Wow. I usually don’t make predictions, but I foresee a trainwreck in College Station.
You mean it could be more of a train wreck?
Indeed
Not a prediction, that was fact.
Train? My bet is on motorcycle.
Aggie Land should turn off Dumbo’s headphones when the offense has the ball….otherwise this is going to be a train/motorcycle/car wreck all rolled up into one…
Probably the best Fisher could do, as many candidates would doubt Fisher’s willingness to truly hand over the reins.
Maybe Petrino will be strong willed enough to seize the reins.
I’ve been back and forth on this. While I’m not 100% sold Petrino will be able to handle being second fiddle, your point has been on my mind as well. I think it would be hard for some with a weak will to get what he wants to be done on the offensive side of the ball. I’m cautiously optimistic about this hire for now.
Things must really be bad for Jimbo if he had to go hire a 61 year old has been.
Awww, you mad I called you out on your other comment, so you had to backtrack to this one? If you don’t understand the logic behind the hire, you probably shouldn’t partake in an adult conversation Ronnie.
“Awww, you mad I called you out on your other comment”
You’re an illiterate moron.
Auburn fans would know after hiring a born-again w-h-o-r-e-monger
Not as bad as Auburn hiring a 40 something thief who steals boosters money to buy his h00kers.
“Auburn fans would know after hiring a born-again w-h-o-r-e-monger”
Is supposed to hurt AU fans feelings or something?
“Not as bad as Auburn hiring a 40 something thief who steals boosters money to buy his h00kers.”
Poor baby.
You finding anything even remotely illiterate in the comment you quoted only further proves my point about you. Thanks for playing.
“You finding anything even remotely illiterate in the comment you quoted only further proves my point about you.”
Try harder.
No need, nothing to find. Your ignorance increases exponentially by the second here.
Oof lmao this will be fun to watch.
“Petrino has a colorful and well-known career history.”
Other than him getting beat up with a golf club, my other fav moment in Booby Petrino’s career was when he left a note in the Atlanta Falcon’s locker room telling the players that he left town.
The same Bobby Petrino that left a note in the locker room to tell the Atlanta falcons that he quit and the guy who cheated on his wife with a female staffer who worked at Arkansas and then crashed his bike in a ditch? That Bobby petrino?
My favorite Freeze moment is him stealing boosters money to buy his wh0re$ in Tampa!
My fav TAM moment is them being bottom feeders in the SEC.
When was he ever accused of stealing booster money?
TAM fans have to make up lies to justify their schools existence in the SEC.
“Petrino is considered one of the top offensive minds in football”
No he isn’t.
You can question his persona, but questioning his offense mind is just typical Ron. lol
Petrino hasn’t had a top ranked offense since 2017.
He couldn’t make the powerhouse Missouri State a top ranked offense?!? Shocking!!
“He couldn’t make the powerhouse Missouri State a top ranked offense?!? Shocking!!’
He didn’t make any team a powerhouse, you idiot.
That’s not what he said, idiot.
So his second to last year coaching D1 football?
“That’s not what he said, idiot.”
Talking to yourself again, idiot?
Wow, you really do stay completely confused don’t you Ronnie? Maybe you should re-read the thread and get back to us when you’ve sobered up.
“Wow, you really do stay completely confused don’t you Ronnie? ”
lovindagame + EKingGill = the same person.
The infamous “same person” fallback deflection eh? Sorry to break it to you Ronnie, but there are many besides EKingGill and myself who are able to identify your ignorance. You are amusing, I’ll give you that.
Well, this will certainly be interesting
High likelihood Fisher fires him when he can get someone he really wants. The likely excuse will inevitably present itself.
HCIW.
This might be the quickest that Petrino has abandoned a team
Atlanta would like a word with you.
I don’t think he stayed a month at UNLV. He certainly didn’t stay long enough to participate in a practice.
Those two deserve each other. Ego maniac’s .
I wonder if he’ll ride into College Station on his Harley?
The good news is that most of the roads are flat and straight around College Station. He should be able to keep his Harley up right this time.
His bike didn’t get him hurt. His mistresses fiance’s golf club did.
I see this as a really good move for the Aggies. Jimbo and Petrino are both highly qualified and competitive, and they both have a chip on their shoulder with something to prove. There’s a high risk/reward look to this that could take the Aggies to a natty or implode. Personally, I like the gamble, and I think it’s going to work pretty well. Nothing about it speaks of complacency.
“There’s a high risk/reward look to this that could take the Aggies to a natty or implode.”
Booby Petrino hasn’t sniffed an SEC West title. Not sure where you’re getting “natty” from. Booby’s best Arky teams finished 2nd in the SEC West.
You guys love to talk about how incompetent Jimbo is with his 8 sheets of oversized paper calling plays.
Aggies were 5-7 this year. If they’d had a single TD more each game this year, they’d have been a 10-win team in the regular season and would have won the SECW. That’s how close this league is.
Bobby Petrino doing nothing but focusing on offense is worth a heck of a lot more than one TD/game over stretched-thin Jimbo.
Jimbo knows his legacy is on the line with this hire, but he passed up a lot of guys who wanted the job to pick Petrino. I can’t imagine he’d do that if he didn’t know he can work with this guy.
I’m excited to see what the next season holds.
“Bobby Petrino doing nothing but focusing on offense is worth a heck of a lot more than one TD/game over stretched-thin Jimbo.”
Hate to break it to you, but Booby’s offense was figured out years ago.
@Ron – Petrino’s offenses are based more on creating opportunities to get the ball into the hands of specific playmakers at specific times in the game more than being married to a particular style of play. That offensive approach will never go out of style, and if executed by talented players, will never really be “figured out” by defenses.
@Gig ’em don’t waste your breath. Our poor little Ronald could not figure out the basic timeline of Petrino’s coaching history, let alone understand offensive schemes and Petrino’s fluid style of play calling and adjusting.
Dan Mullen would have been a better hire
I’ve heard the Aggies talked to him early on when they were taking an initial look at options, but he made it clear he wanted to stay in the booth for at least another year – not ready to get back to coaching yet. I agree Mullen would be a really good OC without having the burden of recruiting and re-recruiting the roster every year.
He has some baggage and issues, but Petrino has Kate Winslett boarding the Titanic baggage.
“Mullen would be a really good OC without having the burden of recruiting and re-recruiting the roster every year.”
Tebow can’t save TAM.
true
How completely on brand for Petrino to take another job for a few weeks and then leave that program in the dust when a better opportunity arises.
A&M has already long ago made a deal with the devil. What difference does it make, at this point, if they add another haint?
In for a penny, in for a pound, right?
Funny that the wholesome Aggies are now the bad boys of college football.
A&M really changed college football with the 10 year $75million guaranteed contract. Now those types of ridiculous coach’s contracts are the norm. That quickly morphed into, if the coaches are going to get that kind of money, the players should get a chance for big money too, resulting in NIL. Just my opinion, but I fear that all of this money will ruin college football as we know it.
My take on the big guaranteed contract is that it sort of protects us from ourselves. Nobody with any influence will ever decide to pay an $85M buyout when 25% is due immediately. In reality, we made a purchase and we’re stuck with it for a minimum of the next 5 years or so. We’ve had a couple of bad seasons – this last one was horrid. Jimbo’s finally come to realize that he can’t be a HC and play-caller at the same time and he has to choose. I think the Petrino hire will fix a lot of issues and put us in a very competitive position next year. Jimbo will have a chance to fix the problem precisely because of the guaranteed contract.
As for escalating coaching salaries leading to NIL, there was certainly a progression, and if A&M weren’t the first to pay someone like that, it would have been another school. It’s a natural progression in a multi-Billion dollar industry.
NIL is actually a really good thing. The problem is that the NCAA has mismanaged the program. I think most of us would agree that immediate transfer eligibility added on top of the mismanaged NIL is more of a problem than NIL itself.
Jimbo has exhibited questionable character. Hiring an OC with such poor character, that there can be no question about it, will not likely make things better.
