Emmitt Smith has message for Florida fans concerned with direction of program under Billy Napier
Emmitt Smith understands that the Florida football program has a long way to go before it returns to the heights it once enjoyed.
The former Gator legend, one of the greatest running backs — and players — in the history of the sport, feels that it’s far too early to throw in the towel on Billy Napier after a 6-7 season that saw the Gators drop 5 of their last 7. Further driving discontent are concerns over the status of highly-regarded QB recruit Jaden Rashada, who was believed to have requested a release from his NLI, a report denied by his father.
To Smith, though, patience is the name of the game regarding Napier.
“First and foremost, he has to bring in a top-notch recruiting class, and has to convince parents that the University of Florida is the right university for their kid,” Smith said on SiriusXM’s SEC Radio. “If he can do that, and then allow that translate on the football field in terms of execution, that means having a quality quarterback, a disciplined organization, young men that are willing to pour into the university and pour into the system and buy into the system that Billy’s bringing to the table that can translate to wins on the football field, and the competitive spirit on the football field, then we’ll see where things are.”
Smith noted that Napier will need to navigate recruiting battles with Florida State and Miami, along with UCF and FAU to perhaps a lesser extent, along with the continued success of Alabama and Georgia’s recruiting.
“We have to be patient with Billy and his staff, and give them some runway to actually go out and do what we expect him to do, and to grow he foundation of the organization the way it needs to be grown,” he said.
When @EmmittSmith22 speaks, you listen!

This message should be taken to heart by SDS writers as much as UF fans…
From the man who predicted back to back long before 2021. Personally I think Emmit is in HOPE MODE!!!!! He doesn’t know anymore about Napier than Florida fans. While I think he needs to be given some time. My gut tells me that he is not the one to bring the glory days of Florida football back!!!! If I’m wrong. I’m wrong, who cares????? You’ll know something this coming season. Because year 2 is when every coach makes their biggest leap forward!!!!!
If he makes a huge leap stick with him. If not then keep listening to excuses or fire him. Florida had a discipline issue but they had talent in that locker room. He ran a bunch off!!!!! As far as pure talent. The gators were better than they looked!!!!!!!
PS. Kirby was 8-5 in year one. And literally a play or so away from 10 or 11 wins!!! Still he was 8-5 but in year 2 Georgia played for their first national championship and deserved the win!!!!!!
Negan
Who predicted back to back before 2021?
I DID!!!!!!
I’ve been saying it on here for years starting in 2016, when we lost 5 games!!!! Not just on here but I said it all over the internet. I had lots of names for different boards over the years. I only started using King Negan or Bobby the brain Negan, Negan and several I can’t even remember anymore!!!!!
Anyone who actually reads my post. They know I said it long before it happened. I predicted Georgia would play for their first under Kirby in 2017. That Auburn would win the west. That Georgia would win the SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME and Alabama would get in by a vote!!! I said I believe Georgia would play well enough to win and get robbed. That they would likely lose in multiple OT periods! And in 2017 everything happened exactly as I predicted then!!!!
Heck I even guaranteed Georgia would WIN the national championship in 2021 and become another dynasty every bit as good as Alabama with Saban if not better!!!!
I GUARANTEED THE 2021 NATTY YEARS IN ADVANCE! I SAID IT WOULD BE IN 2021!!!! Then I predicted that if Georgia indeed won it. That they would REPEAT!!!! Then still years in advance I said if Georgia repeats they would also 3peat!!!!!
That is something I truly believe. Not because I’m a homer but because I know Kirby Smart and I know this team. We were extremely young this season!!! We lose some big-time players but not nearly as many as last season I wouldn’t think!!! Because yes, we always put guys in the NFL. But thanks to injuries to key players. We had some talented young guys playing this season!!!! On offense the main question is QB! Georgia has 3 former 5 star QBs. Carson Beck was a 5 star Mr Florida football and state champion. At a school that had never won anything before he got there! He’s about 6.5 230 and mobile with an extremely accurate cannon for an arm!!!!!
Brock Vandagriff was a former 5 star with 4.5 speed rocket arm. He was the #1 dual threat of his class!
Gunner Stockton is a former 5 star dual threat QB! Also the top dual threat of his class. His stats speak volumes….
177 touchdown passes!!!!!
And….
77 rushing touchdowns!!! That is video game numbers!!!!
PS. I hope Stetson Bennett’s leadership rubbed off. Because Georgia has the talent!!!!!
ANYWAY AGAIN, IT WAS ME WHO PREDICTED BACK TO BACK!!!! I predicted it long before 2021!!!!! I also predicted a 3peat God willing!!!!
PS. I’m sticking with my prediction!!!
Negan
Impressive indeed, although for entirely the wrong reason. Seldom, if ever, have I read a more egocentric, self-serving, and utterly narcissistic diatribe.
GOOD NEWS GOOD NEWS GATOR BRETHREN…
One of the most talented dbs just transferred to Georgia. Smoke Bouie just said yes to the DAWGS and no to Napier!!! And Billy gave him a sack of candy as well!!!!
In other great news on the 13th, Georgia a commitment from another dude everyone wanted. Wait what am I saying? Both Florida and Alabama was in on this one. How did y’all like him picking up the Alabama cap and throwing it away????? I remember when recruits used to do that to Georgia in favor of Alabama!!!!!
As much as y’all likely hate the DAWGS. Surely you enjoy watching Nick Saban falling deeper and deeper into despair??? I know I do!!!!! LOL
THE #1 CLASS OF 2024 JUST GOT BETTER…..
This latest commitment pushed the already #1 ranked 2024 Georgia recruiting class even higher!!!! Georgia just as I predicted God willing, owns the foreseeable future!!!!!
TRUST ME YOU CAN GET A GLIMPSE!!!!!!! : )
PS. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!

But what about all the commenters on here that say this program is doomed? Surely they know more than Emmitt…
Excellent message by an elite player! I hope fans actually listen to what he is saying and develop more patience.
Right on, GatorFan. Emmitt is a wise man indeed, and the few who are overcome with hyperbole would do well to take his counsel. Constructive, objective, and logical criticism always welcome, just not one-dimensional narcissists.
docgator loves deep-dark-parallels with Biden and Napier now, Stay the Course! All is Statist Well!
I’m not sure I know what you just said, Hoss, but I’ll defend your right to say it just the same.
Great player no question, but I think it’s pretty clear the college game and atmosphere has passed Emmitt by, unfortunately.
It’s passed many of us by, Booches. It would be a real chore to think of anybody not agreeing with the concept and application of ‘equal opportunity’ based on merit, but I for one don’t understand the sudden transition to equal outcomes, aka, ‘equity’, based on yet-to-be-demonstrated merit. But of course, I digress. Boobla (below) captures it very well.
I wasn’t really talking about parity or equal outcomes, I was talking about Coaches getting 3 years (sometimes less) then hello Hot Seat. Heck sometimes they don’t even get time on the hot seat, just fired. Especially in the SEC, but that’s just the current culture and atmosphere in the game today.
I know, but like I said, “I digress”. Nothing against you personally, it just “triggered” me. :)
Excellent Comment. UF is on a slippery slope as is everybody because the NCAA is going the same way the NFL did. Parity makes everybody money.
Those are words of wisdom.
Thank you Emmitt for providing some words of sanity about the future of Gator football. Some Gator fans really need to chill out and give our young coach time to build our program back. It won’t be easy and it won’t happen overnight. The more support and less hysteria our fan base provides will make this journey more likely to be successful.
Absolutely.
Shane Matthews says it 5 days per week.
Was he wearing an UGA shirt and hugging up on Kirby while saying that?
I’m shocked, someone else Phil doesn’t like :)
If that’s the same Phil from our old days on GS, it’s probably sarcasm. THAT Phil is a good guy and a good Gator, calls it as he sees it with logic, along the lines of MrTruth, with tongue-in-cheek quite often.
If not the same Phil, then I don’t know what to make of it either, other than an alter-ego of Lakelife.
It was sarcasm, nice pickup. 22 caught royal hell for that picture. I’m surprised his son hasn’t done better at Stanford.
Comeon’ Phil…be patient please
LOL…
U’re alright with me Legs…
Is it just me or do all fans outside of UF continue to get really excited every time one of these G8r OGs say “We have to be patient”
Just you Legs…
I’m really excited!!!! LOL
Negan
You should really contain your libido while in public.
Sydney, your reference to Emmitt Smith as a “ …former Gator legend…” implies that he WAS a Gator legend which is incorrect. Mr Emmitt Smith IS a Gator legend and deserves to be so recognized. SDS apparently sets a low bar for grammatical correctness.
Here here Coach! He is a great guys as well…super funny and approachable when he walked our campus.
I believe it’s intended for SEC School graduates,(Except Vandy).
Emmitt is most certainly an all-time Gator great.
I’ve been an Emmitt fan since that first game he entered against Bama, a long, long time ago. Now how about some patience from the crazies.
Every college team has a crazy fan unit in their midst. I’ve seen people lose jobs for pulling knives on one another for saying something less than complimentary about Bear Bryant back in the day. I had moved into SEC territory as a young man and quickly learned to say nothing about BAMA. They were the worst of all crazies.
Oak trees support your message…
I like to rag on Bama fans, from a safe distance, of course. Like throwing rocks at a wasp nest.
tailwhip…one of the fondest days as well for me as Gator and alum…he is my era, and we all went NUTS when he signed with us.
224 yards….
Recall, he has 10 for 109 the week before. I think that was game 3. We got housed 31-4 by Miami in 87…prob their 2nd best team ever if you ask me.
Those were my years as well.
I was a running back from 6-senior in high school and I wore 22 because of Emmitt. Not a gator fan but was and always will be an Emmitt Smith fan.
I think 3 years would be a safe bet. Look how long it took FSU and Norvell to clean out the closet. Mullen left with Zero prospects moving forward. This next years is going to be rough. And the year after that probably even. If there is no change after that, then we can start talking. Got to give the guy a chance. He was left with a S#$% show and I am glad the turd Mullen was released.
Not me, y’all should have given Mullet a couple more years, the man’s a QB whispering offensive genius…
All seriousness aside, every new coach deserves 3 years to establish his vision…I expect CBN to at least build UF back to where they were with Muschamp…
LOL!
You’re good I must say.
Thx smittyg8r, I got a little tense leading up to the Natty game but ALL IS WELL now…stella got his groove back, you should try it, a really good beer!
Humper, you seem to be channeling Brother Dave Garner again, which is always a good look. Let not your heart be troubled, a three-peat is within reach.
Amen, doc. Sorry for the swerve off the road, was listening to Kansas – Carry on Wayward Son…thanks goodness for Aerosmith indeed – back in the saddle again…
Emmitt has been away from the game of football for a long arse time now so what does he know? Patience is for losers, if Dykes can paly in the NC game his first year and Kelley can win the West his first season, heck if Mullen can set a record by going to 3 NY6 bowls his first 3 seasons, why do we expect anything less?
Answer is this ain’t the SunBelt and Billy boy is over his head.
Emmitt and the patience crowd don’t know squat
In other words, “Emmitt is wrong and ya’ll still s u c k!”
You need to give Napier at least 3 yrs; you gave mullet that long and he was a douche from day 1.
Sic Em…He was being facetious to some of the blowhards here, and of course across Cyberville…most of whom never sniffed a locker room
I sniffed a locker room and it’s an overrated experience!!!!!
Negan
Willing to bet you got pretty excited about the jockstraps though.
Meaning you played no ball…you just wear 34 jerseys and play keyboard warrior.
What a shocker
Well stated by Emmitt. That message should be heard by the administration and boosters at most schools. Don’t compare coaches to Saban. Most schools should probably take the Clemson and UGA approach. Hire someone you believe in and give them time.
Its the message MOST players who have seen him up close and know more than most of us would never know…
Most I know say that he knows what he is doing, and that he had A LOT of work to do.
BE PATIENT!!!! Kirby and Sonny Dukes are not available and I think Saban wants to retire at Alabama!!!! Y’all might get Jim H from Michigan. He appears to want to leave every year!!!! LOL
PS. Be patient!!!!!!
Negan
Napier has to get HIS recruits in and build from there. Hard to keep recruits when the portal/free agency is open and available to everyone. Georgia has gotten 2 lucky breaks to win their championships. Alabama lost their top receiver when they were leading in the game and then this year Ohio State lost their too receiver while leading Georgia as well. Talk about luck!!.. then a good FG kicker shanked a FG try
Did Bama get a lucky break when Colt McCoy got injured in the first quarter of the 2009 Natty? What no one will ever know is how the games would have turned out if Bama and Ohio State had not lost key players. It’s pure speculation to suggest otherwise. Did Bama get lucky that our top pass rusher was not in the game in 2021 and our top receiver was coming off an ACL and was a shell of himself? See the Pittsburgh Steelers if you don’t think a fully healthy George Pickens would not have made more of a difference in the game. Did Ohio State get lucky that our top pass rusher was not in the Peach Bowl? Maybe Stroud would not have had as much time to throw as he did. Just put a team on the field and live with the results.
Wasn’t luck about OSU receiver. Our db knocked him out
Lol…lotta truth here^
Not something I’d be particularly proud of.
Why is that? It was a clean hit
I once hit a running back in the diaphragm area (probably knocked the wind out of him) and he did not get up after the play. It was a sickening and frankly scary feeling.
If you watch in freeze frame between seconds 2 and 3 at youtube.com/watch?v=6O8n8PhRUrQ, there may have been contact that caused the concussion. Do I think it was targeting? No. It was indeed a clean hit. The DB did not launch or hit with the crown and Harrison’s feet were inbounds.
There are “legal” and “clean” hits. But celebrating an advantage because an opponent’s best receiver was hurt? You know, like Marvin Harrison, Jr., Jameson Williams, Kyle Pitts? Wow, I guess I should have realized that’s something Georgia fans have gotten used to. (and yes, I realize the Williams injury was non-contact.)
“But celebrating an advantage because an opponent’s best receiver was hurt”
Kindly point out that part
“Wasn’t luck about OSU receiver. Our db knocked him out.”
And where is the celebration part?
You don’t think Bama was more pumped with McCoy out? Didn’t mean they were celebrating his injury…but they crtainly overcame their own injuries by developing replacements…nature of a violent game.
“With McCoy out” and “our DB knocked him out” are two different statements.
You are engaging in your usual semantic silliness to distract from the fact that a Georgia commenter felt it important to distinguish that Georgia obtained an advantage not from luck, but from a Georgia player injuring an opposing player.
Hump, your favorite team just won a national championship. Enjoy it. Don’t waste your time defending another fan’s stupid comment.
Ahh, I see your angle even if it is askew.
So had he said Alabama DT hit and then rolled McCoy who then had to leave the game with a severe shoulder injury…that would have been the 15 yard flag for excessive celebration…I got it now. Sorry, I’m a little slow today…
Gators DB Target Jaylen Heyward Commits to Georgia
Billy raking them in…….oops sorry billy you lost again to uga
The sources and depths of your neuroses would make for a fascinating exploration.
Gagator, as much as I love the Gators, I can’t blame this young man for choosing Georgia at this time with as well as they are doing as a team and especially on defense. The fact that he had the Gators in his top 4 with 3 current top schools says more to me than him choosing Georgia.
Yeah that’s terrible news and another blow to our faltering program. Tough to swallow the fact that Billy Boy has yet to beat Kirby either on the field or on the trail. Same deal against Saban. Or Kelley.
This Sunbelt experiment will set us back decades
When we win…will you disappear?
I guess Florida fans have wiped from their memories how Emmitt Smith once openly lamented that he didn’t go to Auburn.
Billy’s Online Army will always have excuses until it goes away
Napier/Biden has 24 Gator Games remaining. Be Childish and type as you please
So if he turns the program around will you admit you were wrong?
Of course not, not as long as he can work POTUS into the conversation by some idiosyncratic, autistic logic known only to him.
Ah….so this is Grown man talk big dog?
