College football guru Phil Steele is one of the sport’s most popular analysts for his preseason preview. Steele also offers in-season analysis, including a look into how the smartest folks in the desert rank the 131 FBS teams.

Steele has published weekly Vegas Power Ratings since his days at ESPN. Now independent, Steele maintains connections with sportsbook handicappers at multiple Las Vegas casinos and shares the power rankings on his own website.

According to Steele, the difference in two teams’ Vegas Ratings offers the projected betting line for a neutral-field meeting. These rankings are different from the AP Top 25 and don’t always reflect prior results on the field. Steele points to Alabama’s 20-19 win over Texas in Week 2 as an example:

Alabama barely got past Texas by 1 and was basically outplayed in the game. If the two met again on a neutral field, Bama would be a 12 point favorite.

Entering Week 7, Ohio State is Vegas’ new No. 1. Here’s where every SEC team checks in:

  • No. 2 Alabama (136.19 Vegas Rating)
  • No. 3 Georgia (135.16)
  • No. 6 Tennessee (125.44)
  • No. 8 Mississippi State (123.03)
  • No. 10 Ole Miss (121.58)
  • No. 22 Texas A&M (118.12)
  • No. 26 Florida (116.76)
  • No. 27 LSU (116.71)
