Arkansas football: 10 burning questions as the Razorbacks head into the offseason
It ended up being a winning season for Arkansas, after a thrilling 55-53, 3OT victory over Kansas in the Liberty Bowl left the Razorbacks with a 7-6 record. But it certainly wasn’t the kind of season they were hoping for. Not when you consider that head coach Sam Pittman, in his 3rd season, had elevated the program to 9 wins in 2021, up from 3 the previous season.
Under Pittman, the Hogs had improved, record-wise, over his first 2 years. But they stumbled in 2022, losing defensive leader Jalen Catalon to injury while quarterback KJ Jefferson played with nagging injuries. Those aren’t excuses, but they did factor into a subpar season that raised questions about the trajectory of the program.
Here are 10 burning questions facing Arkansas as it heads into the offseason.
1. Has Pittman reached his ceiling with the program?
Is the honeymoon officially over? Has Pittman already used up all the equity built from a 9-win season just a year ago? Was that as good as we can expect from the Arkansas program with him as coach?
Those are questions that only time can answer, but from the looks of the 2022 season, it appears that “yes” could very well be the answer to all those questions. The number of players jumping off the bandwagon a.k.a. transfer portal might also back up that assertion.
2. Is Jefferson as good as he’s going to be?
Like Pittman, it would certainly appear that Jefferson has reached his ceiling. His numbers were nearly a carbon copy (Google it) of last year’s. But consider he racked up those numbers in just 11 games this season as opposed to 13 last year.
Based on that, one would have to conclude that the improvement was evident, though perhaps fractional. Will 2023 be the year he rises above the rest in the SEC? The help he has around him will play a huge factor, and that may be even the bigger question.
3. Is Arkansas destined to be a middle-of-the-pack SEC team?
This may be an overreaction, but the dropoff from a 9-4 season in 2021 raises the question. The Razorbacks haven’t recorded double-digit wins in a season since Bobby Petrino’s squads went back-to-back (2010-11) and before that, Houston Nutt guided the Hogs to 10 wins in 2006.
Arkansas has won 10-plus games just 4 times since 1989, and it hasn’t had a winning record in SEC games since the 2015 season and only twice since 2011. So the answer, until proven otherwise, appears to be “yes.”
4. Who fills in at LB?
The linebacker position will look very different next season. Arkansas’ all-time tackles leader (441) with the coolest name (Bumper Pool), and All-American transfer from Alabama Drew Sanders are gone. The pair combined for 195 tackles this season, including 18 for loss and 11.5 sacks. That was instrumental in Arkansas setting the school record for sacks (42) this season.
That’s a lot of production to replace. Freshman Chris Paul Jr. could help provide some answers. He turned in his first double-digit tackle performance (12) in the Liberty Bowl.
5. Who will stabilize the WR corps?
Pittman pulled a couple of key receivers from the transfer portal last year, and it appears he’ll have to do it again in order to fill in for those 2. Both Jadon Haselwood and Matt Landers are gone. So are TE Trey Knox and WR Ketron Jackson Jr. That’s a group that made up the Razorbacks’ top 4 receivers.
AJ Green and Jaedon Wilson were among the top targets for Jefferson in the Liberty Bowl, and that may or may not be where Pittman starts to rebuild the position.
6. How will the new DC fit in?
With Barry Odom leaving to become head coach at UNLV, Pittman tabbed former UCF DC Travis Williams as the new guy at Arkansas. A former linebacker at Auburn, Williams will be tasked with rebuilding the Hogs’ defense.
He has big shoes to fill, and it remains to be seen what kind of influence he’ll have.
7. What will the OL look like?
A strength and no doubt an area of particular pride for Pittman, a longtime OL coach, will be a question mark heading into 2023. Gone are veterans Ricky Stromberg, Dalton Wagner and Luke Jones.
But the cupboard isn’t bare. Beaux Limmer, Brady Latham and Ty’Kieast Crawford have experience. And Pittman has already brought in Florida transfer Josh Braun. Others may follow.
8. Can they bolster the secondary?
A lack of depth has been an issue, and now with both Catalon and Myles Slusher in the transfer portal, this is an area of concern. LSU transfer Dwight McGlothern and Quincey McAdoo played well in the bowl game and will be called upon to lead the way in 2023.
9. Can Fletcher handle punter duties?
Punter Reid Bauer has transferred to Memphis, opening the door for freshman Max Fletcher to take over full time. Fletcher appeared in 9 games this season and punted 38 times with an average of 37.5 yards per boot. He’ll need to up his game in order to help the Razorbacks in the field position department.
10. Who will back up Jefferson?
With as much as Jefferson runs the football, getting banged up over the past 2 seasons has been a concern. Backup Malik Hornsby is in the transfer portal after playing 15 games over the past couple of seasons. Arkansas must have a capable backup to help out over a grueling SEC schedule.
Pittman has plucked 4-star QB Jacolby Criswell out of the transfer portal from North Carolina. The 6-1, 225-pounder may be the answer. He played in 15 games over 3 seasons as a Tar Heel, where he threw for 204 yards, completing 18 of 31 passes with 1 TD and a pick. He also rushed 20 times for 133 yards and a touchdown.
” Is Arkansas destined to be a middle-of-the-pack SEC team?”
Yes.
“Is Auburn destined to be a middle-of-the-pack SEC team?”
Also, yes.
We have been less than middle of the pack lately, but I already see a huge upward trend since freeze took over in recruiting. Auburn is on it’s way back up the chain.
“You’d have won more with Coach Prime though.”
How do you know that?
jhg2020
Buddy, hate to break it to ya bud, but AU is going to win some games with Coach Freeze.
You’d have won more with Coach Prime though.
Arkansas lost 4 games by less than 3 points in 2022 with an opportunity to win each of those games but did not; A&M, LSU, Missouri, and (gulp) Liberty. Outside of Bama, LSU, and Georgia, who isn’t going to be middle of the road in the SEC? Don’t say TN just because they had a double digit win season for the first time in forever. Don’t say A&M just because they can afford to out bid every player. Did Josh Heupel hit his ceiling if TN doesn’t repeat their great 11 win season in 2023? Florida hasn’t done anything significant in a long time, Kentucky could win the east and still not get recognition over Georgia. The only other certainty in the SEC, is that Vanderbilt will be at the bottom. Every other SEC team has the potential to have a great season or be a middle of the road SEC team each year. You could ask this same question about each team, each year. We all have SEC pride in our schools being better than the others, and it does just mean more. Arkansas could have easily had a 10 win season and this article would never have been written.
“Outside of Bama, LSU, and Georgia, who isn’t going to be middle of the road in the SEC?”
You left out TN. Also, hate to break it to you, but AU is going to win some games. Don’t think for a second that Coach Freeze can’t win.
Why should TN be above everyone else? Because they just had their first double digit win since 2003?
They seem to have more elements in place to be successful moving forward. And because they didn’t just lose to Liberty and Missouri.
Here’s how I expect the rankings to go next year. Granted, these are the way too early rankings and I’m certainly open to being dead wrong:
1. Alabama
2. Georgia
3. LSU
4. Tennessee
5. Ole Miss
6. Auburn
7. Arkansas
8. Kentucky
Something like that anyway. It’s just my opinion. Which certainly holds no more weight or value than anyone else’s.
OrionPeaceUGA
I completely agree on that. I do expect Coach Freeze to have AU competing for the West in year two. He’s building the o-line up big time.
OrionPeaceUGA, “And because they didn’t just lose to Liberty and Missouri.” Let me remind you that Mizzou took uga to the wire and then some and if it wasn’t for the ohio state kicker you all would be singing wait until next year.
I’m well aware. I don’t see how that changes anything I said.
You have to win those tough games to be at the top. There’s a reason not many teams finish a season with zero losses.
I’m mean, do you really believe that Texas A&M is a better team than LSU? Or that SC is better than Tennessee?
I thinkl Tennessee will be very middle of the road next year.
Yep he will win some games and then some Auburn booster will get rid of him in 3 years just like all the other Auburn Coaches.
Arkansas has been in the SEC for 32 seasons and out of those 32 they’ve had 12 seasons with 8 or more wins! That’s not even 500. They’ve been to 17 bowl games a they’re 7-10 and that’s also not winning record. Arkansas hasn’t been relevant since the Petrino era. It doesn’t matter if you lose by 1 point or 50 points, a loss is a loss but moral victories only exist in Arkansas. The hogs are behind on NIL and Arkansas being one of the poorest states in the country (4th) even with Tyson, Walmart, Stephens and Lindsey management. That doesn’t look to change anytime soon. Fans just need to face the fact that Arkansas has always been a middle of the pack to less than mediocre team. Once Texas and Oklahoma join, it’ll just get worse for Arkansas. Especially when it comes to recruiting. NIL is the new face of college football and much like on the field, Arkansas just can’t keep up!!
Mark Twains’ advice to all who ever reply to RonMexico1: “Never argue with a fool, onlookers may not be able to tell the difference.”
You can actually have an intelligent conversation with RonMexico if you avoid three things:
1. Don’t state things as facts that you couldn’t possibly know unless you actually provide proof.
2. Don’t disagree with him unless you’re going to actually provide something substantive to go along with your point of view.
3. Don’t post trolling comments. He will respond in kind.
Otherwise, for whatever reason he has chosen, he pulls out the “ma’ams” and insults.
Why don’t you read your post while standing in front of a mirror?
Strange request. Why would I do that?
I enjoy reading what Ron has to say, and he’s funny a lot of times, but the “ma’am” as an attempt at an insult is about the weakest one I’ve seen.
I’m a lifetime Razorback fan, but anyone taking an objective look would have to admit that Arkansas is middle-of-the-pack, maybe.
Frank Broyles got us out of the dying SWC, where we were one of the top dogs. Early in our SEC days, he warned a group of boosters that out of the 12 (at that) teams, we ranked 7th in resources. Nothing says “middle of the pack” better than that.
And if you look at on-field success, we rank 13th in total wins over the past 10 years. In other words, not even middle of the pack.
I have higher aspirations like all Hog fans do. But I’m also a realist.
Well said.
#11. Who will be the OC next year? You heard it here first.
So MUWinn…that is a major scoop! Mizzou is firing Dinkwit and offering the HC job to Briles? Definitely a step up for Mizzou!
Negotiations fell apart. Briles returns to the Hogs.
Hogs will finish 3rd in the West in 2023 behind Bama and LSU. It’ll take some time for Freeze to hire the right prostitutes, Dart still sucks at Ole Piss, Bobby and Jumbo gonna butt heads and Arnett is brand new with no cohesion in the staff. We’ll be bowling in FL at the least-
I bet you thought Arkansas would finish 3rd in the West this season also huh? Arkansas will be fielding a pretty much a new team next season with a partly new coaching staff. Look for another 6-6 to 7-5 season.
Bacon…please tell us you’re kidding. Tell us how many times AR has finished the season ranked since joining the SEC more than three decades ago. Why is your team suddenly the 3rd best team in supposedly the top division in college FB?
Exactly!! If Arkansas finishes 6-6 next season, fans need to consider that a successful season.
Arkansas will be a middle of the pack team in this league most seasons except for a good year now and then. It’s been this way ever since we joined.
…..but I would like to add that I hope the rest of the SEC wants us here. We’re national contenders year after year in other sports….baseball, track, and basketball is currently doing well. But, I understand…football is king.
Arkansas is much more welcomed than Missouri. Those boneheads came in here acting like they were better than us for some strange reason.
Bill…please don’t let the loud minority like wolf and others convince you that most Mizzou fans think our team is more than it is. We joined the SEC for financial security. Same as AR did 30+ years ago, as has been written about. We’ll have the occasional great year but most would readily accept 8-4 every year and consider that a great success.
Sadly we are a middle of the pack team in the SEC…we are what our record says we are period. Yes, we should have won more games this year but we didn’t & I think now my biggest concern is that perhaps Sam Pittman has already reached his ceiling because it seems everyone loves the guy….so why did 30 players leave? Some have legit reasons but others don’t other than they didn’t want to be there any more. I loved the fact that Drew Sanders came from AL because he could be a starter at Ark…thought other talented players would be tired of waiting to play & do so too….it hasn’t really happened yet. During the Chad Morris years, we were the DEAD LAST, Bottom of the Barrell SEC team…now we have improved, but need more depth to move beyond where we are-which also translates into more wins in those close games. If we consistently win 10 games a year, then we would be viewed differently and I really thought Gus M. could have come home & done that a few years back, but he didn’t. We have a great AD, we are ELITE in both SEC baseball, basketball & track, we have more money than most programs (Jerry Jones, The Walton Family)…so it is really coaching at this point. We’re better, we’re okay but not great, not elite and not consistent at all.
Is Arkansas destined to be a middle of the pack team? We’ve been middle of the pack for a long time with a few years following the pack from the rear. Why would things change? Will we have a good year here and there? Probably. Will we be world beaters and the Face of the SEC? Probably never.
