Current Massachusetts governor Charlie Baker was announced as the next NCAA president on Thursday as current president Mark Emmert prepares to step down soon.

According to the latest release from the NCAA, Baker’s new role will begin in March of 2023 after his term as governor ends in January.

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey released a statement on the Baker hire Thursday:

“Congratulations to Governor Charlie Baker as he assumes his new role as President of the NCAA,” it read. “Governor Baker brings an impressive track record of leadership to the NCAA Office and his ability to build consensus on complex issues will be important in this era of transformation for college athletics. I look forward to hearing his vision and collaborating on the future of college sports.”
