Hayes: 3-peat? Why not? Nobody is slowing down Kirby Smart’s hungry Dawgs
Two big red flag in the Michigan and TCU had me thinking this was going to be a blow out. One the fact Michigan spotted them 3 touchdowns and they still almost won. Two the fact Michigans passing game was average all season but TCU’s defense had them looking like a Big 12 offense circa 2014
If we had the format this year TCU would have been ranked 7th and faced USC in the first round so for people to argue we shouldn’t expand I think last nights game made the point that we DO need to expand it
Yeah, that was my argument for the past few years as far as why we should expand.
Less blowouts and pretenders would be weeded out. This year if we had the playoff format TCU would have been ranked 7th and faced USC in the first round. I don’t think they beat USC.
I know they lost to Tulane but they did have some opt-outs so that wasn’t their full starting squad that played
I think THIs game was the national champion game. As far as TCU and Michigan goes I don't know if they have the talent on their rosters to be a top 4 team, I don't think they would have made the semis in a expanded playoff format. If TCU pulls off another upset I will be the first to admit I all wrong but that is what my eye-test tells me
I was actually rooting for them(I'm not an OSU homer but more of a college football fan) but I really don't think those two teams have the talent to be the 4 best teams. They wouldn't make the semis in an expanded playoff. I think Georgia wins comfortably
I hate to defend Michigan but you have to keep that in context because the eye test says Michigan was the more talented team that gave away this game. Take away the two pick-sixes Michigan gave away 10 points, one a touchdown that should have stood. Refs were bad all night but that no doubt was the most consequential call of the night
You don't think they could sneak in when they expand in 2024? Their QB looks like he is going to be pretty good so I'm basing it off that
I wouldn't call this a bold prediction but I think both these teams are in the college football playoffs in the next 2 seasons.
I’m surprised LSU has the Spence best defense in the SEC? Or you stating that was the second best defense UGA faced? Anyways to answer your question on paper I think OSU’s passing attack can be elite. Even without Jaxson we have two first draft picks starting and Julian Fleming is probably a future 2nd or 3rd round draft pick. The problem is our playcalling is very mediocre and CJ Stroud is sorta overrated. He’s a slower version of Mac Jones who really benefits from elite receiver talent rather than elite skill.
@mountain dog I’m talking about on a year by year basis. Not specifically this year. The reason why is pretty simple in the SEC the players come in with enough talent that developing and coaching up players isn’t as important as it is in the Big Ten
It’s a legit question that generally curious but Penn State has a good defense and actually so does Iowa. The problem with Big Ten teams are their offenses
I won’t argue with that but one thing the bad SEC teams lack that the bad Big Ten teams have an advantage is the players are more disciplined and better coached. I’m not an osu id big ten homer by any means. I actually lived down in Georgia for years so I watch alot of SEC football and that’s what I notice
I don’t think OSU has a chance with Henderson out. Williams is a good back but not a good matchup against an SEC defense because he’s more of a power back and Henderson is a speed back(with some power).
That said, what’s the best defense Georgia has faced this year? As someone who’s watched SEC football for years I didn’t see an elite defense in the SEC outside of Alabama
In all fairness even though the Big Ten depth wise was hot garbage this year, when Alabama was at its peak the SEC did not have the depth that they do now. Alabamas best regular season win(outside of the sec championship) was against a 9-4 LSU team who lost to Notre Dame in the Citrus Bowl.
@bulldog he won’t be eligible until next year, he does fit the mold as a running back who would be selected in the first round in the modern NFL because he’s a good receiver.
On paper I would agree about Alabama’a front 7 but how is their secondary? They seemed to struggle with offenses that have speed on the outside like UT and LSU.
You are correct they haven’t played a QB with the same speed as Duggan. I’m not seeing that comparisons of the 06 matchup against Florida though?
Back then the SEC was a physical run-first conference so they saw a lot of physical teams before they played OSU.
The most physical team in the Big 12 is Kansas State who TCU lost too yesterday.
Sorry that comment was meant for someone else
Utah lost to a mediocre Florida team. The reason the PAC-12 looks good this year is because the 12-6 teams were worse than usual.
Big Ten was no juggernaut and it was probably the worst in over 20 years.
The top three teams were better than last season. Penn State is way better and if you go by common opponent they beat Auburn at around the same margin of score as Bama and Georgia did. I’m not saying they are as good of a team as those two but something to think about when you evaluate them.
Overall that your comment is just a bad and over-emotional take
I hate the not ranked at the time debate. South Carolina ended ranked that’s all that counts. The only argument against Tenn is that their QB is out and with Milton that team is probably a 7 or 8 win team
That’s a tough call because their coaching and play-calling is better, overall talent the Buckeyes trump them. If Jaxon-Njigba plays their is probably 3 first round draft picks that are starting with Henderson at tailback. The only big edge I would give TCU is their QB is more mobile and therefore a more dangerous weapon then Stroud is. You shut him down in the passing game then his talent level drops quick
When we expand the playoff we should just get rid of the conference championships and replace that week with the first round of the playoff. There is no point to them anymore now that the playoffs are expanded and the bowls don’t have automatic qualifiers anymore
I’ve been watching Alabama and UGA all season. Osu would match up very well against Alabama but not Georgia. Alabama has had trouble with teams that have good recovering corps and one could make the case we have the best receiving corp in the nation especially with Jaxon Smith-Nijigba starting. Georgia on the other hand is like Michigan except with better wide receivers and QB.
ND’s defense is their strength! It’s their QB and coaches lack of experience that was their downfall this season. ND has some projected first round draft picks starting, if they would have had a decent QB they could have easily been 11-1
That’s the appeal of college football, teams change on a yearly basis! Now more than ever with the transfer portal.
This Michigan teams is not the same team as last year, they have a better and faster QB(which was michigans biggest issue last year) and their running backs have more speed. That said I can agree with everything else you said
I’ve been side-eyeing him ever since he lost us the game against Clemson in the playoffs back in 2019. He’s almost as overrated as Jim Tresell
It just proves what I’ve always said that the committee has recency bias by putting UT at number 10 over teams they beat in Alabama and LSu. Usc will probably jump lsu if they beat Notre dame this weekend. I’ve said this for years but I wouldn’t mind going back to a system like the BCS to decide the playoff teams which take the negative aspects of human decision making out which biases like recently bias
That was some “Big Ten Late November weather” that invaded Lexington. Granted it is pretty far north compared to the rest of the SEC so I can imagine you get your cold games. Does it usually get that windy there in November is what I’m wondering?
