NCAA announces changes to rules for second-time transfers
The NCAA announced a new change to rules for second-time transfers on Thursday, indicating that the council had voted unanimously to update guidelines for the “waiver process for undergraduate student-athletes who are transferring for a second time.”
It added that each waiver request would be considered on a case-by-case basis, but that student-athletes must meet one or more of the following criteria to be eligible to compete immediately:
- A demonstrated physical injury or illness or mental health condition that necessitated the student’s transfer (supporting documentation, care plans and proximity of the student’s support system will be considered), or
- Exigent circumstances that clearly necessitate a student-athlete’s immediate departure from the previous school (e.g., physical assault or abuse, sexual assault) unrelated to the student-athlete’s athletics participation.
Lack of playing time and position presence will not be considered to grant waiver requests. This move comes as somewhat of an unsurprising one as several have voiced concern with thew transfer portal since it initially opened in regard to players transferring multiple times for a host of reasons.
Good, that will slow the portal down a bit.
They’ll just pull the Justin Fields plea – “I was called a bad name by a fan!”
Haven’t guys already entered the portal for the second time? What happens to those that have already transferred without knowing this rule?
Unless they had a degree, they had to file for a waiver and argue hardship of some kind. This at least makes the hardship standard a little tougher.
So basically, the kids are one additional lawyer away from nothing has changed
It is about time they started putting in some rules to control the chaos. Now they need to stop the recruiting of players that are on a teams active roster. Sooner or later some team or coach is going to get caught.
They should designate a specific period for the portal to be active. A large number of players enter the portal and do not find teams to join & cannot return to their previous team. If the portal process started in mid April and ended in Mid June would be the best thing for teams and players. Spring Training gives players an idea of how much playing time they are going to get. Coaches can see where they need to add players to strengthen their team.
