Greg McElroy went into an extended conversation about the transfer portal in his latest episode of “Always College Football.”

McElroy noted that there are more than 1,000 players in the portal, and last year saw about 3,000 players by the end. It’s the reality in college football these days.

“The portal’s most valuable to quarterbacks, that’s a big part of it,” he said. “A lot of people will say well, that’s where you find your guy and to solidify backups, and guys go in and leave starting jobs in hope of another starting job presenting itself and they go into a competition and sure enough, they’re beat out.”

McElroy pointed to JT Daniels, who entered the portal from West Virginia and is looking for his fourth team in college after USC, Georgia and West Virginia.

McElroy then went into detail about several high-profile quarterbacks, largely from the ACC, but there are dozens of quarterbacks already in the portal, and about a dozen that are high-profile names.
