Tony Grimes is heading to the SEC after 3 seasons in the ACC. The former North Carolina defensive back has committed to play for Texas A&M.

Grimes announced the big news on his Twitter account.

Grimes is coming off of a 2022 season in which he made 12 appearances, recording 36 tackles, 7 passes defended and a forced fumble. UNC went 9-4 this season and is set to face Oregon in the Holiday Bowl.

Out of Princess Anne in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Grimes was a 5-star recruit in the 2020 recruiting class. He chose Mack Brown’s program over scholarship offers from 39 other teams.

As a freshman, Grimes appeared in all 12 games of UNC’s 2020 season, making 4 starts. He had 14 tackles, 4 passes defended, a sack and an interception in his first year. Against Texas A&M in the Orange Bowl, Grimes had 3 tackles, 2 pass breakups and his first-career sack.

Grimes started all 13 games for the Tar Heels in 2021. He finished the season with 47 tackles, including 2 for loss. Grimes recorded 9 pass breakups that season, which tied for fifth in the ACC.
