Harold Perkins, 5-star 2022 LB, decommits from Texas A&M as 2 SEC rivals angle for flip, per report

Harold Perkins, a 5-star linebacker out of Texas, who committed to Texas A&M earlier this month, has decommitted from the Aggies, according to multiple reports.

Perkins is from Cypress, Texas and ranked the No. 1 linebacker in the country, and the No. 4 player overall in the class of 2022, according to the 247Sports Composite. The news was first reported by Darren Heitner, and Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports has also reported the news, with comments from Perkins’ uncle, Alvin Walton.

When he committed to A&M, he was their 6th 5-star recruit of the 2022 cycle.

“His options are open right now,” Walton told 247Sports. Perkins is taking an official to LSU this weekend.

“I talked to him earlier today, that’s solid LSU,” Walton said.

Florida got an official visit earlier this month, and the Gators and Tigers are going for in-home visits on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

Texas A&M remains atop the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings without Perkins in the fold but they no longer have the No. 1 class of all-time. At the time of his commitment, it was believed that the Aggies beat out LSU and Texas, but the Gators have evidently made up ground.

Here are his highlights from Hudl:

  • Could get interesting, but I like LSUs chances of signing him. He'll still be at home in Louisiana.

    • I think LSU could secure him if he likes that visit. Hopefully he doesn't like the LSU visit, because our class really needs him. But so far Billy is doing well, also @YOUWORSHIPAFOOTBALLTEAM he is not going to VT

      • He gave an interview at the Polynesian bowl saying he liked what Florida said about them using him in the wildcat offense. He's a very athletic guy who could probably cover multiple positions, and I hope the Aggies can land him, but the outlook's not great in that regard.

        • Ah...okay thanks! Well his tape on offense was spectacular as well. I see DHenry's post about your RB room...which is accurate and may be a reason why that wasn't pitched to him. I would play D if I were him..

I sure hope we can get him though :)

      • I think he is just building up suspense, but maybe somebody is promising him more play at the RB position too. He may be a great running back but I really do not see him playing both positions at A&M. We have a lot of RBs already.

    • He is originally from Louisiana. I think he always wanted to play there, but all the coaching upheaval had put off his committing. I think with so much Houston talent/friends going to A&M, and his obligation to commit at the All Star game kind of rushed things. Jimbo is not quitting, but it will be interesting.

  • Last in house visit is with Jimbo. I still find it odd that he roomed with Walter Nolen at the Polynesian Bowl and de-commits shortly after.

I know his uncle is running his recruiting (red flag). Seems like the kid is a little bit of a flake. Will be interesting to see where he ends up.

Gives me flashbacks of Speedy Noil.

  • Sounds like Perkins will end up at LSU. Maybe he feels more comfortable there. Maybe an NIL deal is somewhere there also. Either way, he would be a huge pick up for Kelly at a need position.

    • Apparently Napier and Florida made a push based on the pitch that he will see Wildcat snaps. Will be interesting to see who he picks.

      • It will be, but any scout will say his future is at LB. Similar situation to Devin White from LSU out of high school.

        • Yea definitely does not project as an NFL offensive player. Try telling an 18 year old kid that has been elite on that side of the ball his entire life that.
