Maybe it was a hangover from the emotional, season-turning victory over Alabama a week earlier.

Maybe it was the 11 a.m. local time kickoff.

Maybe it was the cold weather.

Or maybe it was a combination of all 3 — as well as facing a spirited Arkansas team in Fayetteville — but No. 7 LSU struggled for much of its game on Saturday afternoon.

Both defenses dictated the terms of how the game was played, but the Tigers (8-2, 6-1 SEC) found enough offense in the 2nd half to hold off the pesky Razorbacks (5-5, 2-4), 13-10.

Malik Hornsby started at quarterback for Arkansas in place of KJ Jefferson, who struggled through a shoulder injury in a loss to Liberty a week earlier.

The Razorbacks sacked Jayden Daniels 5 times in the 1st half — an SEC-high this season — and used their pass rush to contain the Tigers offense. But LSU’s defense — led by B.J. Ojulari and freshman Harold Perkins — smothered the Arkansas offense. Perkins finished with an eye-popping 4 sacks on the day.

Arkansas crossed midfield midway through the 3rd quarter and tried to convert a 4th-and-2 at the LSU 48 and Hornsby slipped down for a 12-yard loss while trying to avoid 3 Tigers defenders.

Daniels threw a 26-yard completion to Kayshon Boutte, setting up Josh Williams’ 1-yard touchdown run and a 13-3 LSU lead with 5:25 left in the 3rd quarter.

Arkansas coach Sam Pittman benched Hornsby, turning to Cade Fortin on the ensuing possession, which became a 3-and-out.

Williams’ 31-yard run moved the Tigers across midfield before they stalled and punted, backing up the Razorbacks at their 6.

Over the course of the remainder of the 3rd quarter and the start of the 4th, Fortin drove Arkansas 94 yards, the last 40 of which came on a 40-yard touchdown pass to Matt Landers.

That pulled Arkansas within 13-10 with 13:17 remaining.

On the 1st possession of the game, LSU drove to a 1st down at the Arkansas 39, but Daniels was intercepted by Latavious Brini.

Later in the quarter, the Razorbacks drove 46 yards to Cam Little’s 28-yard field goal and a 3-0 lead.

On the 2nd play after the ensuing kickoff, Daniels fumbled and Brini recovered, setting up Arkansas at the Tigers’ 10.

Three plays netted 7 yards and on 4th-and-goal Hornsby was stopped for no gain and the quarter ended with the score still 3-0.

LSU lined up to go for 4th-and-1 at its 24 but committed a false start. The Tigers faked the punt and punter Jay Bramblett ran for a 1st down, but the play was nullified because of holding and LSU finally did punt.

The Tigers created an opportunity early in the 2nd quarter when Perkins knocked the ball loose from Hornsby and Pjulari recovered for LSU at the Razorbacks’ 37.

After LSU gained 1 1st down, Damian Ramos kicked a 38-yard field goal to tie the score.

Later in the quarter, John Emery Jr. broke free for a 32-yard run and Williams converted a 4th-and-1 with a 9-yard run before the Tigers faced a 4th-and-4 at the 6.

LSU lined up to go for the 1st down, but after a false start Ramos kicked a 29-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 6-3 halftime lead.
