Nick Saban shares why he supports expanded College Football Playoff
The College Football Playoff will again be a field of 4 teams this postseason, but the sport is moving toward expansion in the next few years. Thursday, Nick Saban voiced support for the approved 12-team model, expected to come sometime between 2024-26.
The topic came up during Saban’s weekly radio show. The Alabama head coach said he likes the 12-team format for fan interest. He noted that Alabama would be among the fanbases still engaged in Playoff discussion right now in a 12-team format.
Saban said he is an advocate for a bigger playoff field because of fan interest: “If you have a 12-team playoff, we’d probably have 20-25 that would still have a chance to get in a 12-team playoff. Like we would have a chance to get a 12-team playoff.”

Alabama is ranked No. 8. With 2 losses already and LSU representing the SEC West in the SEC Championship Game, the Crimson Tide is all but officially out of this year’s CFP barring multiple wild upsets involving top teams over the next 3 Saturdays.
It will be just the second time Alabama has missed the Playoff. The 2019 team played in the Citrus Bowl after dropping regular-season contests to LSU and Auburn.
