This article is about the FUTURE competition in the SEC West. But as usual, we keep seeing the same people wanting to talk about what their favorite teams did to other teams during past seasons. What happened in those past games have no, as in ZERO, bearing on what will happen in future games. Then there’s that other group of people who insist on bring politics or current events into a sports themed site. All of you people living in the past and wanting to bring politics into every discussion….GET A LIFE!
Yours is the best post of all on this article. I agree that the portal is Sabin’s biggest threat. He isn’t a fan of the portal, nor is he a fan of an unregulated NIL. I’m giving Sabin a couple more years as a coach. By then other teams will have built strong teams through the portal and we’ll begin to see multi-loss seasons at Alabama. Sabin will have had enough of the portal and NIL and will call it a career.
If you were a Houston Texans fan during his years as head coach and GM, you understand and wouldn’t have had to ask that question. He’s only as good as the talent on the team he’s coaching. That talent overcomes his pattern of being predictable and lacking the vision of how to run the RPO offense.
Correction….LSU has 9 returning offensive starters. SDS really needs an edit function so we can correct our keyboarding mistakes! PLEASE LISTEN SDS!
I don’t see Nussmeier leaving. He knows he’s the #2 and only one unfortunate play away from being the #1 which is very possible with a run first starter. I also see Kelly giving him substantial playing time throughout the season. It won’t be a tandem QB system, but I believe we’ll see Nuss getting field time in just about every game. He also knows this is for just 1 season. He’ll be the favorite for #1 the 2 following seasons.
I disagree with the Power Up rankings with LSU at #4. The Tigers, depending on which rating service you look at, had a recruiting class ranked as high as #5. It’s transfer class came in at #1. Also consider that of the 14 transfers it lost, only 3 had any experience as starters, and those starts were sporadic. For example, it lists Jack Bech (WR) as the team’s biggest portal loss. Bech, at best was only in the middle of the pack in the receiver room…not a huge loss. Losing Howard (QB) might hurt in a couple years, but he was #3 in the QB room, possibly dropping in the future with strong freshman QB’s coming in. Add to that an offense that is returning 5 starters and a defense that filled every need via recruiting/transfers, I see LSU no lower than #2. I see a Georgia/LSU SEC Championship rematch this coming season. And don’t be surprised when the outcome of the game is different.
Yes, the good old days. I remember them well. Back in the late ‘60’s, I had a cousin who was a HS All American QB and was heavily being recruited. He narrowed his school choice to Norte Dame and LSU. He chose LSU. Nothing was ever said, but I found it coincidental that not long after his signing, he was driving a shinny new Mustang and a den was added on to his parents house. Paid for by a booster? We’ll never know. Coincidental? Definitely yes. Unfortunately, we never saw his greatness on the field. A week before the start of the season in which he’d had been the starter, he passed away due to a brain aneurysm.
Rules are rules. They shouldn’t be rewritten to benefit a single player, regardless of who he is or what he has done. In Stetson’s case, 4 MVP awards don’t make up a career worthy of HoF status. Heck, he didn’t even play 2 full seasons as starter!
Money, in many cases, is the root of evil and destruction. Give it time. Unless there are some rules put in place to control NIL deals, NIL will become the root of evil and destruction in college football too.
NIL will and is ruining college football. Until there are some parameters put into place, college football will never be the same.
SDS needs to add an editing option. The last sentence should have read “over opting out of a so-so game”. I hope SDS reads these posts and will make this much needed change.
You’re right. Players used to play for their university. Now it’s the “all about me” attitude. Now for the top of players, the university is just temporary destination. Part of the cause is the scholarships are for 1 year. I recall the days they were for 4 years. The schools were just as committed to the players as were the players to the school.
There’s another factor hurting the bowl games that people seem to be ignoring. That’s the ties the bowl games have with the conferences. It forces the hands on some bowls by pitting two so-so teams in some cases. I recall the days of the past when there was competition between the bowls in selecting the teams. That competition resulted in some of the best college football games of all time. Bowl selection day was as exciting as player signing day. We all sat anxiously waiting the news on what bowl our favorite team was headed. Now in some cases, the bowl destination is known before the last game of the regular season, or at least it’s known that the destination will be one of 2 bowls. The expanded playoffs will result in some pretty good games. Make the remaining bowl games exciting by eliminating the conference ties. It might even result more players choosing to play in a competitive game over opting out of a How game.
I forgot to say one thing. The 2022 season has ZERO bearing on the 2023 season. So LSU rightfully being ranked above Tennessee has nothing to do with last year’s Tennessee win over LSU.
You Tennessee fans just can’t let go of the win over LSU. Y’all won and won big! There I said it. BUT, I also have to say thank you. That game was the best thing that happened to LSU last season. It was a wake up call. It woke up a sleeping Tiger. If LSU had played Tennessee after that wake up call, I can guarantee you one thing…it would not have been a blow out. Who would have won that game? We’ll never know. LSU might have won, Tennessee might have won. But it would not have been the blow out we saw. So again, thank you Tennessee! BTW, it’s kind of funny that y’all don’t say much about the S. Carolina game.
Hang tight Georgia administrators! PETA will try turning this into a news worthy issue in attempts to shame you into doing what they want. But just be aware that the far left libs who support PETA account for only 25% of the US population. The other 75% of the population are on your side. Don’t give in to PETA!
Now we’ll see the environmental folks getting involved by jumping on Texas for using Bevo at games because cow farts are polluting our atmosphere! Maybe PETA needs to spend their resources on helping the millions of dogs that are released by their owners to a life of being strays.
Look again. MSU was listed at 25. I’m pretty much ok with the top 25 as a whole. But I doubt the BIG10 will put 2 teams in the playoffs again. The question is which team will replace one of those two. Not Florida St. and as much as I’d like to say LSU will be the team, I don’t believe they’ll do it in year 2 of the Kelly tenure…maybe (probably?) in year 3. Something is telling me that ‘23 will be the season a PAC12 team cracks the playoffs, only to see the fate of TCU.
Had TCU played in the SEC and had Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and LSU on their schedule, they’d have had 4 losses.
I’d put the 2019 LSU team against the best of the 2021/2022 teams Georgia could offer.
By half time, the TCU players looked like they wanted to just go to the bus and head out to the airport instead of the locker took.
Here’s to Georgia. Congratulations! The way the Dawgs destroyed TCU was proof that TCU didn’t belong in the playoffs. They were lucky to slip by Michigan and you guys just dominated them. I’ll go as fas as to say no team from the BIG12 belongs in the playoffs. Just look at how many playoff games Oklahoma won when they were a common participant. There’s really only one championship quality conference….SEC.
So I missed the number by a 1. It was 7 ranked teams when the games were played. 2019 ranked teams LSU beat.. Texas Florida Auburn Alabama Georgia Oklahoma Clemson
Finally, someone agrees with me. I’ve Ben saying since the First round games that Georgia fans are counting their blessings much too early. Let’s face it. Georgia was lucky that they beat State. Also people overlook that the LSU game was much closer than the score indicated. Take away two freak plays that resulted in quick Georgia scored, the final score could easily have been 36-33, a Georgia win nevertheless, but very close. Also let’s not overlook what LSU’s offense did to Georgia’s tough defense. TCU can easily do the same if Georgia isn’t up for the challenge.
You’re right. This was his redshirt year. He played in only 2 games. His eligibility begins to tick off this coming season. I know he bleeds purple and gold, but of the 3 QB’s, I believe he’ll be the one to hit the portal when the time arrives for him to make that decision…unless Nussmeier beats him to the punch.
WRONG! Both Campbell and Jones were selected True Freshman All Americans.
Oklahoma won 47 consecutive games in the 1950’s. That’s the true measurement for greatness….Not a 29-1 run “if” GA beats TCU.
Don’t overlook Georgia just had two tough games. They’re lucky to have beaten Ohio St. and the 50-30 “blowout” of LSU isn’t as indicative of how close that game really was. Take away 2 freak plays that resulted in GA scores, that game could have easily been 36-33. And don’t forget the offense stats LSU posted. A Georgia win nevertheless, but much tougher game than the score reflected. TCU has the offense to do similar to what LSU did. I’m pulling for the Dawgs, but GA fans, don’t start counting your blessings just yet. TCU has the capability to end this 2 years of greatness with a thud.
