Paul Finebaum named the most surprising team in the 2022 season.

In an interview with Rutgers Wire, Finebaum was asked about the biggest surprise of 2022. The team that Finebaum named as the most surprising was Texas A&M. Finebaum explained why Texas A&M’s disappointing season shocked him (Via Rutgers Wire):

“I will go with Texas A&M. They started the season number six in the country. One pundit on game day, Desmond Howard, picked them to make the final four and win the national championship,” Finebaum said.

Howard infamously selected Texas A&M as 1 of the 4 teams in his College Football Playoff prediction before Week 0 in August. Texas A&M was expected to challenge the top of the SEC for the conference championship. Unfortunately, the season went sideways after the 1st month.

In Week 2, Texas A&M suffered a shocking loss to Appalachian State. The Aggies were able to recover from that early loss to Appalachian State with consecutive wins over Miami and Arkansas. Texas A&M finished September with a 3-1 record. After that solid start, Texas A&M went on a 6-game losing streak from Oct. 1 to Nov. 12.

The Aggies were able to finish the season with a 5-7 record following 2 wins over UMass and LSU in Week 12 and Week 13. It was not the season anyone expected Texas A&M to have. There will certainly be pressure on Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher to deliver in 2023.
