Tennessee sees wide receiver, former 4-star recruit, reportedly enter the transfer portal
Tennessee will lose some depth on offense, as a former 4-star recruit is reportedly headed for the transfer portal.
WR Walker Merrill, a Brentwood, Tennessee native, has entered the transfer portal, according to On3 Sports, after he appeared in 22 career games with one start. He caught 3 touchdown passes this season, and overall made 8 catches for 116 yards.
His first touchdown catch came against Ball State, and Merrill also set a career-high in receiving yards with 46 in win over Akron on a pair of receptions, including a 38-yard TD pass from Joe Milton III early in the fourth quarter for his second score of the season.
Last season, Merrill appeared in 10 games with one start during his rookie campaign, and saw action as a reserve in the slot, playing 81 total offensive snaps.
Coming out of high school, Merrill was a consensus top-10 player in the state of Tennessee, and received offers from 23 schools.

Hate to see him go. I thought he was going to be good for us. Didn’t quite break the depth chart but as is the time, you only got 4/5 years to put yourself on film and he wasn’t doing that in Knox. Go get you some WM.
In heups system if you arent in the top3 you just dont get much playing time unless someone gets hurt. In order to go fast you cant substitute so if you arent starting youre sitting for a lot of the game. Bru, Ramel and it looks like squirrel have the starting 3 spots pretty locked up. I hate to lose him. Think he is going to be really good somewhere but wish him best of luck. we need backups too. Maybe he will change his mind…
I don’t know why he wasn’t at least even the rotation in the orange bowl game. Seems like he caught every pass thrown to him that was catchable in the regular season and even had a few good TD catches. As down at WR as Tennessee was during the orange bowl, there has to be something the coaches are not saying about him. He might not practice well or some other issues we don’t know. Coach Heup even admitted Hooker didn’t practice well that’s why Milton got the starting nod 2 years ago. Merril might be a gamer, alot of players do that. Lights come on and so do they. Wish him well either way. As down at WR as Tennessee is, hate to lose him.
