Making the transition from College to Pro Ball is a challenge for most players. The transfer portal has been very useful for a lot of players to be exposed to different systems and different coaches. In Jalen's case, I don't think the transfer to OK made him better, but it sure speeded up his transition to the pros.
With 76 former Bama folks on the roster of the NFL this year, it is hard to not watch teams that I despise.
Like probably most of the fans on this page, we all have an above average interest in the sport. With that said, like him or dislike him Saban is certainly one of the best college football coaches out there. I can't imagine questioning the choices of Saban in picking his staff. He has to live with them and knows more about what is needed and how it's done than any of us.
Will he make the offense better? Probably. Will he make the team better? Probably not.
Richardson in the first round? At best, he is a project. Late second at best.
Who really believes that TCU is the second best team in College Football? I've been a fan of Sagarin's rankings for decades. A great source if you are in the betting world. His final rankings are: Georgia, Bama, Ohio State, Tennessee, Michigan, Penn State, Utah, Texas, TCU and LSU for his top ten. Real analysis, not emotion.
I'd want Young in my locker room even if he couldn't throw a football. Anyone who loves football, his team and teammates like Young is an incredible asset. Oh, and he can thow the ball too.
This was one of the best Bama games I've seen. Players played as a team and for their team. They demonstrated that the "process" is more than a buzz word. I'm proud of these young men.
Yep. I have no use for Dabo and Clemson. Lived in SC for many years. SC is a lot like Alabama. The love-hate between Clemson and USC is a lot like Bama-Auburn, but more hatred. I hope that Dabo continues to fail so the BS about Dabo being the Bama coach someday goes away.
Go to the "homer" Clemson sites. Folks that love, eat and breath Clemson. They have been apprehensive since Dabo lost all of his assistants and replaced them with in house folks to include family. The last 24 hours have been brutal. Basically saying that the team was at a crossroads when the assistants left. Now they see it as Dabo is incapable going forward. I hope the 5 star QB that Clemson had transfers to someplace where they can develop his skills.
I guess we will find out if those who complained about USC's OC were right or wrong. Notre Dame is always way over rated. USC should win.
I think that IF he has a Tennessee/Clemson type game with Notre Dame, he will decide to go to the pros. With a weak game he'll stay. 2024 won't have a huge QB list. He could potentially prove that he should be a first rounder if he stays and continues to develop. Of course he might be happy with being a career backup in the pros. Pays ok.
I know a lot of folks don't know history much, but Steve Spurrier with the "fun 'n' gun" offense was the beginning of a wide open offense in college ball. Got Florida it's first national title. He started it at Duke (called the airball offense), but when Bob Stoops came in as the defensive coordinator, it all worked. Kiffen and Saban brought it into the modern day of winning with a wide open offense AND defense.
There is a reason why most Halls of Fame require a "cooling off" period between the end of a career and actual voting. We all need to cool down from the Leachfest. Certainly he was a decent college ball coach. Despite his efforts, he didn't focus on preparing his players for the pros. Lots of yards produced, but the NFL didn't see those players as pro material. That is maybe a good thing. College ball in it's purest sense isn't about preparing players to be pros. I see him as an above average football coach, but certainly not a great one.
Let's look at strength of schedule. Georgia's is 23. Ohio State is 44. Bama is 31. Michigan is 53. Tennessee is 39. Clemson is 54.
Expanded playoff is a joke just like the current "selectors". Seven of the 13 are Athletic Directors. Businessmen, not football gurus. One is a reporter who didn't play football (female). One is a former FCS Coach. One is a former FBS Coach. Three are former players. Then they decide that the expanded playoff will have half of the selections automatic bids. So the committee gets to pick six. Wow. An extra two teams to pick instead of the four they pick now. How about no automatics and real metrics applied to pick the best twelve?
Twelve teams with automatic bids is the modern version of participation trophies. It really should be about the best teams.
At least now we have the transfer portal. Coaches get fired. Teams get sanctioned. And the players used to be the only ones that got punished.
This makes life easier at USC. Firing him would be a good idea, but the possible grumbling is a distraction. I'd go after Arkansas OC.
Traditionally a pay raise is to keep a coach. I'd say that Beamer would stay at USC for free! I think he wants to beat his Dad's 28 years at VT.
I'm more concerned about Georgia's tendency the last few games to play down to their opponent. If LSU comes out strong, Georgia will play strong and blow them away. If LSU comes out weak, Georgia stands the chance of losing on a fluke play near the end.
Why would Kiffin want to go to Auburn? He's at the point in his career where the next job has to be a step up and not just for the money. He's building a program at Ol Miss and it's getting better. Would he want to start over at Auburn? At best, right now Auburn is a lateral transfer and that makes no sense. He knows what he has at Ol Miss. No telling what he'll have at Auburn. His future job desires are Bama, Georgia, Ohio State, Clemson, etc. He wants Championships.
It "can" be an indicator of the youth of a team. In this case it really isn't. Five years in and his sophomore, junior and senior classes have been sidelined by Jimbo on purpose. He knows this season is lost so he's working on getting his freshmen game time. How can a fifth year coach have better freshmen than upper classes? I can see it for a first year coach.
When was Dan Mullen ever "adaptable and adjust his system?" Or developed "really good talent?"
I love the comments. Folks that don't like Kiffen use the "but he didn't beat Saban." If that is the standard, Coach O is unemployed and Jimbo will be soon. Is anyone suggesting hiring them? Kiffen has nothing to gain by going to Auburn. I could almost understand if he was a coach in the East and wanted to come to the West to take on Bama every year. For all practical purposes, Old Miss to Auburn is a lateral transfer at best and it will take him a year or two at best to rebuild the program. He is close to competing for the SEC Championship Game. Why would he want to start over?
Jimbo was an "ok" hire, but not for the cost. His coaching record wasn't that good. A one time wonder when he lucked out with a QB that he didn't even recruit. He was on his way down at the old job. Folks who actually looked at his old program questioned this hiring at the time.
Yes. Auburn has to get rid of the toxic environment (earned and unearned). They aren't in a position right now to hire a coach with demonstrated skills. Look at the big name coaches. LSU got a good coach but the environment was full of talent and recent success. Keep Cadillac for two years and then move on.
The people who make the decisions are ADs from the schools. It's all about maximizing the financial return while still making it look like they care about football.
It's not a lump sum payoff. 25% within 60 days and then paid off every year, so it's around $8 mil a year. That's doable. Two ADs should never be given AD jobs again. They need to do something quick before the portal takes the freshmen away.
