And at the current moment the players would be relying on a class-action lawsuit - i.e. one guy or small groups lawyers, limited by that groups ability to pay, with no direct or binding input from any other groups of players - as there is no current structure to legitimayel represent all of them. But you can bet money that structure is coming ...
It doesn't matter who the NCAA President is. Within 10 years a subset of the P5 will break away to form and run their own football league, with their own rules and their own enforcement (i.e. little to none). This organization - as an employer of the players while the teams are 'sponsored' by the schools to try and preserve a veneer of continuity and product name recognition - will be able to make rules on compensation and free agency. They will 'stabilize the sport and create a modern and fair model moving forward for CFB' or some other such self-congratulatory hooey. It will inevitably and utterly fail. Because it will be NFL Lite. And minor league sports don't attract enough eyeballs to warrant media mega-money. The product in CFB was never the players - they constantly change. It was tradition, nostalgia and regional pride. Which will be the first things jettisoned ... the new league will be explicitly 'a break from the past!' Meanwhile, the vast majority of schools not amongst 'the chosen' will dump football ASAP. Without football most schools can't afford an athletic department. Without athletic departments 10,000s of kids lose an opportunity to get a college education. Remember though, it was grossly unfair not to pay some other kid, who's never played a snap unlimited millions of dollars. That's why the system *needed* to change. (Note: O'Gara is extremely disingenuous when he says the arguments for paying athletes were always about fairness to and the welfare of current players. B.$. *Everything* in college sports is always about recruiting. Everything. Always. Did he watch the CFP Championship game?). Well, we got the change 'we' asked for (and by 'we' I mean the sports media): Boosters hire and fire coaches and players. Rosters are cobbled together yearly without continuity. There is no longer any sense of unique identity amongst teams or conferences. And we're going to gleefully burn down the rest of college sports and the opportunities it provides ... ... why? Oh, because the top players (who were all going to go pro and make pro money anyway ... and are the only ones getting significant NIL deals) needed - deserved! - money *now*. Or at least their handlers did ... But it's not worth getting upset about. It will all be over pretty soon. "Hey! Look! A golden egg!" "We could get more gold if it wasn't for this darn goose. Let's kill it."
Well, now we know which screen name O'Gara posts under ...
Nebraska is a small population state that lost its access to Texas recruiting by leaving the BXII. That was the beginning of the end (abandoning its unique identity with the triple option didn’t help either, as they also abandoned with it the niche of recruiting those elite athletes that don’t fit in the ‘boxes’ other schools are looking for i.e. Tommie Frazier, etc. The triple was never stopped on the field, - it’s as sound an offense as any other - it just became unfashionable). Conversely California is a huge state with plenty of talented recruits. Recruits who may now be enticed to stay in home state programs and still play in one of the 2 top conferences.
“And if fans realize they’re watching nothing more than a watered-down version of the NFL, they’ll choose the superior product.” They always do. But the ‘Playoffs! More playoffs! Bigger playoffs!’ contingent doesn’t get it. The money - for conferences, schools, coaches and players - comes from advertising. Advertising is driven by viewer interest. And a polar model featuring 2 mega-conferences and essentially relegating the other half of the FBS isn’t going to draw. It’s a danger to the future health of the sport. No similarly structured competitor to the NFL has ever survived. Ever. So why does CFB keep moving in that direction?
Georgia is obviously #1 until someone beats them. They’ve earned it regardless of whatever this years NFL Draft haul turns out to be. FSU may be a bit high. USC seems a bit low.
Deeply saddened to hear of this sudden and tragic loss. Sincere condolences to the families, program and supporters.
I respectfully disagree. If by "national game" you mean roster make-up, most major programs were recruiting nationally in the mid-80s (when the covetted pipelines were California, Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania ... in fact, PSU's move to the B1G was considered by many to be a deliberate attempt to get stronger in OSUs recruiting territory). ND has always been national. Look at the 90s rosters at schools like Tennessee and FSU ... lots of California kids. Osbourne's Nebraska famously recruited Florida heavily. This isn't my opinion. There are plenty of contemporaneous articles written on it. OldBaldFrog: Yes, the decision occurred in 1984. That's why I very clearly said 'filed' in my comment.
Nah, 100% of the hate towards Georgia stems directly from the obnoxious behavior of the overwhelming majority of their fans. Just go read any post by the big UGA fans here like jay.cardea, Dawgs2021, gwhite, Corch, or LegHumper … constant, slavering, belligerent, blind, Georgia-homer nonsense. It’s who their fanbase is …
I’m also sure I’d get a good laugh out of hearing you describe what you think Tennessee’s offense is. I have a feeling we could pour all of your football knowledge into a shot glass … and not spill a drop.
Only here in the South do we equate ‘fandom’ with ‘bandwagon a-hole’. It’s entirely possible to support a team -tirelessly, enthusiastically, passionately- without: a.) thinking you’re on it and b.) displaying a total ack of class, civility, and sportsmanship (concepts also, sadly, long-lost in our region). You can pick any team at random or because they’re trendy to be a fan of … but to me you’re a bad joke if you do,
So, so mad. So pathetically sad. On Georgia's biggest night ever to. Why not just enjoy it? You'd really think someone from your proclaimed previous profession would possess more composure than the average 12 year old. Sadly not.
Re my previous post both you and West Point were/are part of the Army so I respect that. But 'rooting' is much different than calling yourself a 'Black Knight' (or more technically correct a 'Cadet' ... and when and why did USAFA and USMA decide it wasnt good enough or cool enough to be called what they actually are any more?) and using 'we' when talking about the team. 'WE DOMINATED!' You watched TV...
In my opinion it's phony (and sad and weak) to identify yourself as part of an institution that you were actually never a part of, seeking some kind of reflected glory from their achievements, and then use that to try and pump yourself up and put others down. It's like when people say 'I was going to join the Marines' ... well, if my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle, but she ain't and you didn't. Yes, I get that it's a *big* Southern thing to do so, I live here too. It's a free country though so folks can go be a Laker/Cowboy/Yankee/Bulldog all day long if they want to be!
Which team 'with future 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks at DE, OLB and safety' runs the 335 Stack ? Why not? Becase there are sounder defenses to baee out of? If it were equally sound, do you think we'd see some top team base out of it, if only for the advantage of being different than the rest of their opponents schedule? You're correct that it's meant to be try and be an equalizer for lesser talent (coverage options, angles, speed in lieu of size, etc.) but it can only do so much if the talent differential is too big. You're also correct that TCU is in it because they don't have the personnel to base out of 34/43 and be successful (though by # of snaps played on the field nickel personnel is really the new 'base' anyway). Conversely, on offense, 'equalizer' schemes (wishbone, spread) are often adopted (if sound) with exceptional results (OU, VY Texas and um ... OU). If the Stack could be, it would be: better players, somewhat obviously, make good schemes better.
What's in the article is exactly what I said it was ... made up. All thongs Georgia have gotten nothing but love in sports media for a year and counting. You're the bitter one, and on the best night in Georgia history too. Now that's effing sad.
Go look at the scores of the old Orange, Sugar, and Cotton as well regarding matching tip teamscfrom across the country in big games ... frequently with titles decided (albeit usually indirectly so prior to '92).
Um ... not exactly. Bowl Coalition: 1992 Bowl Alliance: 1995 BCS: 1998 The only significant thing in this arc that happened in '83 was Oklahoma filing suit against the NCAA to play more on television. Prior to that the NCAA controlled who played on TV (and it was just 1-2 games a week and bowl games). OU won it in the Supreme Court in '84, opening the door to the cash cow CFB has become. It can be argued that football has been more than just a regional game since the advent of the Rose Bowl in 1902, specifically intended to promote intersectional play with Eastern teams. However many teams, notably Notre Dame, requently traveled long distances by rail to play in other regions. Penn State proposed a 'Jet Conference' in the late 70's to band together with other then-independents (there used to be a *lot* of them) who traveled often (by jet) to play across the country. It didn't happen. It's more accurate to say that cfb was (once?) a game of tradition and regional rivalries ... primarily because those rivalries became tradition before air travel and the interstate highway system.
NFL teams are a bit dogmatic about size because of durability concerns, but he'll get a shot. It will be up to him to do what he can with it. Wherever he ends up they probably won't doubt him as much as Kirby did. Heck of a player.
Given his career I'd be more worried about losing him to the NFL than another college. I'd bet he stays for at least 1 more season though.
That's O'Gara's own made up straw man of quote, not referencing a source, you dolt.
