Mississippi State lands commitments from QB, WR transfers

Zach Arnett’s Mississippi State staff is doing work in the transfer portal. The Bulldogs picked up transfer commitments from a quarterback and a wide receiver on Sunday.

After 3 seasons at Vanderbilt, Mike Wright is headed to MSU. Wright played in 26 games for the Commodores before entering the transfer portal, making 11 starts at quarterbacks over the past 2 seasons.

As a passer, Wright’s career numbers are 184-of-333 (55.3% complete) for 2,067 yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Wright also ran 176 times for 905 yards and 7 TDs. In 2022, Wright’s passing yards slightly dipped from 1,042 to 974, but he posted career-highs in touchdowns both passing (12) and rushing (5).

Wright has not redshirted during his career. He has 2 full seasons of remaining eligibility.

Mississippi State is also adding a receiver. Freddie Roberson from FCS program Eastern Washington has pledged to the Bulldogs.

Roberson joined Eastern Washington in 2018. After redshirting his first year on campus, he played in 38 games over the next 4 seasons (2019-22). Roberson played in 10 games in 2022, recording 45 catches for 797 yards and 7 touchdowns. He had 3 catches for 33 yards and a TD at Oregon and 4 receptions for 62 yards at Florida.

In his Eastern Washington career, Roberson logged 141 receptions for 2,266 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also had a rushing score in the 2020 season.

Upon his transfer portal entry, Roberson shared a highlight reel from his Eastern Washington career:

  • Good stuff! Also, apparently Freddie said he spoke with Price and Dillon Johnson while at State and referred to them both as part of the team. I wonder if Johnson is going to back out of transferring.

  • What a steal! Knew that dude needed to play somewhere better than Vandy! Didn't know he was in the portal.

    • I guess you're technically right. State has a .495 all time winning percentage, while Vandy has a .485. Congrats!

      • Thanks friend, it's lucky for y'all that the rebs were so good all the back in the 60s-70s. Too bad about recent years.

        • Yeah, I just think it is funny that you think you are so much better than Vandy when historically your programs are VERY similar.

        • Um, no, omrebs.
Well, we are both often picked to finish at the bottom of our respective divisions. But one minor difference is we usually finish at least mid-pack while Vandy usually does not disappoint the pre-season prognosticators.

Oh, and we both have a pretty good baseball program. (Although that seems to be true of most of the SEC recently.)

        • Historically is the key in what I wrote. You can't deny that historically State and Vandy are very similar in football in terms of winning percentage.

        • @omrebs

So how's it feel having a losing record over the last 5 in the Egg bowl to a team that is fictitiously similar to vandy?

Also I can't remember the last time they were ranked. Much less ever #1 in the past 10 years. There are numerous other examples of why you are wrong, but I have better things to do with my life than argue with an individual who has the IQ of a 2 year old.

You are a poor representation of the state of Mississippi.

        • So, prove to me how, from a winning percentage perspective, State is far superior to Vandy. Again, I state this fact: State .495 winning percentage; Vandy .485 winning percentage. You can emotionally argue the last 10 years if you like, but the facts remain. State and Vandy, historically, are VERY similar football programs.

        • 0.495 > 0.485, duh

The success of the last 10 years is not an emotional argument. It is true we have similar win records, but there are many concrete statistics over the last 10 years that show we have accomplished much more than Vanderbilt's football team.

For example, since you clearly have not kept up with recent SEC football history, here's a history lesson for you: about 15-20 years ago we were terrible. Then a guy named Dan Mullen came to coach. A couple years into his stint, he recruited an underrated QB by the name of Dak Prescott, (who is currently an NFL QB) who led the school to its first #1 ranking, and sustained it for consecutive weeks. Before this time period, becoming bowl eligible was a "great" season here. Dan Mullen ushered in a new era of bulldog football, where becoming bowl eligible is below the standard. Even a win above bowling is meh. Now, we are on a 13 season bowl streak - a period Vanderbilt has only been to 5 bowls in. 3 of those were on 6 win seasons.

If this doesn't add up to you, maybe google some youtube videos on how to do basic math.

  • I would like to take a moment to apologize to the fans of my Alma Mater for my conduct on this site. I have made us look stupid in front of everyone, and I realize now that no one was fooled into thinking I was actually a State fan. I admit that State runs the sip, and I'm going to refrain from trolling in the future.

  • I think the last 20 years is more relevant than historical records dating back to the very early 1900’s. So your point is accurate. But it’s not relevant. I looked it up. Ole Miss winning percentage over the last 20 years is .5019. MSU’s is .4998. So, it would be fair to say Ole Miss has had the very slightly better program over the last 20 years. Congratulations on the huge edge. Vandy’s percentage is .3515.

More recently, one of these 3 schools ended the season ranked and won their bowl game.

As far as what happened before I was born or I was too young to care…well, I still don’t care. I don’t think most MSU fans would argue that Mississippi State is a football powerhouse. It is comical that some Ole Miss fans think that their team is far superior when records over the last two decades seem to prove otherwise.

    • I looked up another stat. UM vs Vandy all time record is 40 wins, 39 losses for UM, apparently. So I guess…Ole Miss is on the same level as Vandy?

Honestly, I’m being facetious and I think Ole Miss has the better program. But..I always pull for Vandy lol.

    • Typical Ole miss fan... opinion not relevant. It's true. We gotta do better than this guys.

Guys I'm sorry for all the trolls from our fanbase on this site. You guys deserve better than this.
