Mannie Nunnery, former Houston LB, announces SEC commitment
Mannie Nunnery was a 3-star player in the 2019 recruiting class out of Texas. He chose to stay close to home, committing to Houston.
Now, after 4 years with the Cougars, he entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal and has chosen a new school.
As you can see below, Nunnery took to Twitter on Monday to reveal he was committing to Billy Napier and the Florida Gators for the 2023 season:

Nunnery recorded 46 total tackles, 1 sack and 2 pass breakups for the Cougars in 2022, his most productive collegiate season yet.
Florida will be looking to add contributors all across its defense, so we’ll see what role the Texas native carves out for himself in Gainesville in 2023.
For those interested in such things- 6’2” 225 Outside Linebacker.
Minimum size for an SEC linebacker. Ten pounds heavier will be better. I’d expect the Gator nutrition and S&C people to go to work on that as soon as he gets to Hogtown.
He will get bigger and stronger. I am assuming that all of the defensive guys we have portalled in have shown they already know how to tackle! Please, let it be so!
The text book definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again expecting different results. I’d like to believe tackling is something Napier’s staff of thousands has looked for on film before recommending an offer to defensive portal transfers.
If I read it correctly, he and the RB are already in Gainesville enrolled for the spring to participate in the off-season and spring practice and so he’ll have a great chance to get to his needed size.
Without knowing much about the kid, I’d be willing to bet he can do one thing the guys he’s replacing couldn’t do… tackle.

46 total tackles in 13 games, 28 solo, that works out to a riveting 2 solo tackles a game…sounds like he got a scholly to a blue blood SEC program to compete for practice squad time…imho
Perhaps you’re right Humper, but I was referring more to tackling technique than numbers.
I’m just tired of watching former Mullen recruits throwing themselves across ball carriers’ paths and believing they attempted to “tackle” them.
We’ll see whether I’m right about his technique next season.
Also, another article mentioned he did well on special teams, which is a big need.
Don’t confuse us with facts while we’re all eagerly awaiting Truth or Cojones to invoke a Shakespearean, “GET THEE TO A NUNNERY!”.

You know Tennessee proved you can improve quickly using the portal. Yet, they also proved something else! They proved you can literally have the playoffs nearly in hand. The easy way like Alabama did in 2017. When auburn won the SEC WEST and Georgia won the SEC! Yet Alabama was voted in!!!! I believe they were voted in over a conference champion? Honestly I can’t recall right now!!!
Anyway, Tennessee proved they could go play a team everyone thought they would beat, except me!!! They proved with the playoff on the line. They could go into a hostile SEC environment, AT NIGHT even! Yet go in both ” UNPREPARED AND OVERCONFIDENT ” to get SPANKED!!!!!

They found themselves in a nasty bee-hive type of SEC ROAD GAME AT NIGHT TYPE OF TROUBLE!!! Just exactly like the potential trap-game Georgia found themselves in at Missouri at night!!!! That is the kind of game that you prepare YEARS FOR!!!! That is what the champions are preparing for WHEN NOBODY IS LOOKING!!!! That gut-wrenching hard workout that nobody sees. That time in the gym as well as years on the practice field with YOUR BROTHER!!!! Those YEARS of hard work to build THE CHEMISTRY OF A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM!!!!!
Tennessee had close to enough talent. No actually I would say they had enough talent, to make the playoffs. IT WAS THE CHAMPIONSHIP CHEMISTRY THEY LACKED!!!!!! When they fell into a deep pit. They didn’t have the true brotherhood or CHEMISTRY it took to get it together. This is what comes of a team full of talent. That has been thrown together from the portal mostly. Players who weren’t TRULY FAMILY!!!!!

That is good except that the uppers of the SEC are still recruiting way better!!!! I believe teams that are BUILT THROUGH RECRUITING AND ACCENTED VIA THE PORTAL. These will remain the top teams provided coaching remains at elite levels!!!
I said all that to say this. I personally don’t believe in Napier and have some doubts about Josh H. Still nobody knows what Florida will look like or Tennessee for that matter!!! Those teams are NOT as Farr apart as most think! It was a 1 score game I believe!!!!
I’m just saying that recruiting and culture. Elite coaching and DEFENSE! These things will NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE!!! Offense sometimes has an advantage vs teams with average offense & defense. Still when teams are truly built culture and DEFENSE FIRST. With head coaches that understand you need to also score. Defense will NEVER BE PASSED BY!!!! The coaches who RECRUIT the best and coach the best COMPLIMENTARY FOOTBALL. THESE WILL DOMINATE, PORTAL OR NO PORTAL FOR AS LONG AS WE PLAY THE GAME!!!!!!!

There isn’t much in what you wrote that I would disagree with Negan, except for your out-of-hand dismissal of Napier as a head coach with no potential to succeed in applying the very same Saban/Smart “process” to a tee at Florida.
Give him time. Time may yet prove you right, but time is what Smart got in Athens, to come to a full understanding of the value of playing COMPLEMENTARY FOOTBALL, which is something his DC Muschamp NEVER learned. BOTH of his NC teams required an outstanding QB to save his beleaguered defense along the way.
Also, I seem to recall that Smart came up short to Alabama in 2017 and 18, to LSU in 2019 and to Florida in 2020, before perfecting his formula. It took him five years and he had the benefit of starting out with a solid team left behind to him by his predecessor, something you must agree can’t be said for Napier’s situation when he took over at UF.
