SEC issues statement on replay review in Arkansas-Missouri game

The SEC has come out with a statement on a replay review from the Wednesday Arkansas-Missouri, and said that an incorrect decision was made, and relayed to on-court officials.

In a game where fans of both sides were irritated with the officiating, Missouri beat Arkansas 79-76 in game that had 56 combined fouls.

At issue is a foul that happened with 43.7 seconds left to play in regulation and the game tied at 71. Arkansas guard Davonte Davis was whistled for an offensive foul. The Missouri player that took the charge, D’Moi Hodge, appeared to have his feet in the restricted area under the basket. By rule, players cannot stand in that area and take a charge.

According to the statement the SEC released Thursday, “the location of the player in relation to the restricted area arc is reviewable in the last two minutes of a contest … the video replay center incorrectly communicated to them that the play was not reviewable. Therefore the play stood as called on the floor.”

Davis was one of 4 Arkansas players who fouled out, along with Jordan Walsh, Kamani Johnson and Makhi Mitchell.

Davis received his fifth foul, and Missouri got possession.

  • They need to also issue a statement about when Devo tackled the Missouri player and nothing was called, or when the Missouri player got an and one after getting fouled by air, and when Kamani committed a foul by playing good defense and staying vertical. There should never be 50 fouls in a CBB game.

After looking at the replay, the Mizzou's defender's foot was barely in the restricted area. IMO it should've been a block strictly off the rulebook, but that's SEC officiating.

    • I didn't see the game, but I can't imagine being unhappy with SEC officiating after Big 12 officiating.

      • It was just weird. Guys were getting hammered underneath and no call, then some phantom call that even on replay wasn't close to a foul. Diarra got called for over the back on a rebound 15' from the basket that he literally had to turn around to go after.

    • Agree Dale! So many bad calls on both sides. The SEC should have commented on some of the more obvious blown calls.

  • The officiating was bad, but that wasn't near the worst of the calls/no calls going on all night. Actually even after replay it's not conclusive either one of his feet were inside the arc. I say it should have been a no-call but Davis was out of control on that play so they were going to call something. If anything should have been called it should have been carrying the ball on Davis before contact.

  • Would be nice to have a game, just one game, where the officiating was called correctly and consistently for both teams. Maybe some day in a fairy tale land it will happen.

  • I'm not sure replay would have helped. The defender was inside the arc when his heels were touching, then he went up on his toes to get his heels off the floor. The biggest problem was the obvious flop; Davis went past him left to right at the last second, brushing him, and the dude went flying backwards like he had been shot. I don't know if they can call someone for a flop on replay, but that's what should have happened.

Still, Arkansas has itself to blame for the L. Way too many turnovers.
