Ole Miss freshman men’s basketball player Malique Ewin was reportedly involved in a fatal automobile accident that resulted in the death of a man visiting the school’s campus.

Ewin has missed the Rebels’ last 3 games. Coach Kermit Davis has cited “personal reasons” for the freshman’s absence.

Per a report from On3 Sports, Ewin is not expected to face criminal charges in regards to the incident:

The university released a statement on the matter, but didn’t confirm Ewin’s involvement:

“The University of Mississippi Police Department is investigating a one-car motor vehicle incident that occurred Jan. 13 involving a student that resulted in the death of a visitor to campus. The victim initially sustained severe injuries and was taken by helicopter to a Memphis hospital, where they later died from their injuries. Our thoughts and condolences are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. Due to the ongoing investigation and protections outlined under FERPA, we are not at liberty to share any more information at this time, including the student’s name.”

Ewin has played in 14 games for the Rebels this year, making 0 starts. He’s averaging 1.4 points and 1.1 rebounds in 6.1 minutes per game. There has been no word about if or when Ewin might return to the team.
