I started paying attention to CFB in the early ‘70s. Since then I’ve seen UGA play (and beat) every P5 team on the top 25 all-time winning percentage list except three: Southern Cal, Washington and Miami. Thought we’d get USC in the Peach but Riley Rileyed. Last time the Dawgs played USC and Miami was in the ‘60s. Never played the Huskies. I want to see those three before I shuffle off this mortal coil.
People get shot everywhere for less. Texas ain’t special there.
22nd consecutive year a Dawg is in the SB. Leads the country, along with LSU (although Helaire is inactive). All-time record is 26 by Nebraska. Haven’t seen a stat for NC/SB rings in consecutive years, but I imagine it’s pretty slim.
On the 1-10 scale of things you can conceivably get arrested for, this hovers barely above zero. So no, if it was Joe Bleaux on the LSU tennis team you’d never have heard about it.
“The 2023 NFL Mock Draft will take place in Kansas City in late April . . .” Jeez, Louise. Editing is dead.
Probably. We’ve had some fast RBs, but Herschel was the only one with true world-class speed (best 100m was 10.10 in ‘82). Definitely the fastest since Keith Marshall’s 4.31 40 at the combine a few years ago.
Read he has a 4.28 laser-timed 40 already. Ran a 10.4 100m as a sophomore. Kirby loves him some speed.
The average NFL OC salary is right at $1M for 2022. If you throw the Pats out of the equation, the very highest-paid NFL OCs are making in the general zip code of what Todd makes now (north of $2M). Maybe Todd does want to return to the NFL, or maybe he’s leveraging another big raise from UGA. Time will tell, but it would not surprise me to see Josh and Kirby reward him with $3M-plus to keep him. Most NFL teams won’t go there, and the proof is in what they’re currently paying. UGA is one of a handful of CFB teams that can go dollar-for-dollar with most NFL franchises for staff. Kirby already makes WAY more than the average NFL head coach ($11M vs $7M). League franchises have more income overall, yes - but they also have that monster balance sheet line item that colleges don’t: player payroll.
I would be stunned if Levis went #1. Anything can happen, and there are plenty of top-pick cautionary tales from the past, but this would be the NFL equivalent of Michigan State’s Mel Tucker contract.
Yup. I’d be gone in a flash if commenting went away. The news is easy to find elsewhere, and without the incessant gambling promos delivered as stories.
They are, but it’s a complicated contract structure where the school athletic association - usually a separate entity from the university and funded by the public and boosters - pay the lion’s share of these contracts.
I used to follow the big 3 pro sports pretty passionately. The first one to go was the NBA after the clown show it became. Had Falcons season tix for years, but steadily lost interest in the NFL as it became more toxic and politicized. Now I could literally not care less. I still support the Braves to a degree, but not the hyper way I used to. The free-agency revolving door and money-grabs in pro sports make it very hard to maintain a competitive roster. One or two big contract misses and your team is cooked for a while. Fans generally spend their time and money on teams, not individuals. CFB is the best essence of that still left today, though it’s rapidly changing. Turnover has always been baked into college sports by its nature, but this fast-tracked witch’s brew of unenforced NIL standards, transfer portal, and immediate eligibility all coming together at once is unhealthy for fan loyalty.
Those two got their big paydays AFTER bringing a trophy home. Big diff. Paying best-in-class money for ephemeral “potential” is another thing altogether. At least Jimbo had a ring from another school. Debatable logic, but an argument can be made for carryover, especially after Saban and Meyer. The worst contract ever, though, was Michigan State backing up the Brinks truck for Mel Tucker when he had barely a dozen P5 wins on his career resume. I love Mel, but that was sheer insanity.
If I were going to ask Adam a southern culture food question guaranteed to fire up the readers, it would be: sweetened cornbread or plain?
Yeah, they’re all over Minnesota (in-law country). Glad I don’t have to travel a thousand miles to get a good butter burger any longer. I love onion rings with my burger, So BK and Culver’s fit the bill.
Going with fast food without any other qualifiers, my favorite in the Atlanta area is Culver’s. Whataburger is making a splashy entrance to the Atlanta market, and the new one in Kennesaw is absolutely overrun. We need In-N-Out and Carl’s Junior to do the same. Not a huge chicken fan. Show me the beef!
He seems to be in a good spot with his family, time, and stress level, and has clearly said so. Money’s not an issue. Does the competitiveness override that? One other consideration is, are we at a point where a successful OC at Bama with lots of head coaching experience becomes a double-secret HC-in-waiting?
Add hands like glue and the ability to catch the ball at virtually any angle or position, regardless of coverage, and the kid is lethal in a way we just don’t see often.
I’m looking forward to seeing a lot of 12 and even 13 packages featuring Brock and Delp on the field at the same time. The defensive attention on Bowers will help others, but Oscar could be the biggest beneficiary. I have a feeling he’s going to announce himself to the CFB world in ‘23.
The main thing there is the clarification that they were on their own time. However, I also read that the vehicle involved was one the university leases for recruiting staff. More to come, undoubtedly.
Could we ask for more popcorn-worthy entertainment than a double-feature of Fisher/Petrino and Saban/Mullen?!
No way Gunner transfers. He’s been ultra-clear on that. He came in expecting to sit a year, compete and play some in year 2, and hopefully take the reins in year 3. Brock said a couple of weeks ago that he intends to graduate in Athens. We’ll see what happens, but folks have been predicting an exodus of UGA’s QB room for over a year now.
The blue-chip QB “bust” list is long and distinguished. Running a high school offense well just ain’t in the same zip code as a P5 gig against NFL-type talent and ultra-sneaky DCs. Lots’a can’t-miss arms fall off that steep learning curve.
