It really is, but I do think the years at USC should include an asterisk because of those NCAA sanctions. He didn't get to coach with a full deck, so it hurt not only depth, but recruiting and development.
Grantham usually has a good year or two before his defenses start spectacularly falling apart. Saban can probably squeeze a good third year out of him before another school comes calling.
Mullen might be one of those guys who is just better as a coordinator than an HC, but then again he might have been at the right place at the right time at Florida under Meyer. We all know Grantham fizzles out after a couple of years. I would be interested in hearing from former players on what they experienced in between year 1 and year 4 playing under him.
That sucks for him really bad. Not to minimize the injury or what he is going to have to go through, but in a non-contact injury, that might mean it was already partially torn. Again, not trying to minimize the injury, but the timing was probably good because it means that while he is recovering, others are getting more snaps and more development on the line and he will come back stronger and fresher. I sincerely hope he has a speedy recovery and I hate it when any player gets injured especially during the offseason.
Exactly, sicem. Also, any QB will do much better when there is pass protection. I'm hoping a team with an OL will trade up to get him.
It's absolutely stupid and disgusting how much people care about gambling or fantasy sports to the point where they are threatening people or their families or publicly celebrating when a key player gets badly injured.
Congrats, Auburn. We've been doing a decent job of developing DTs lately and I hate to see him go.
He did a good job at Jacksonville State because he was out recruiting everyone else. FBS is going to be completely different. There is talent everywhere now that we have the transfer portal. There are a lot of well coached G5 teams that can upset a P5 any week.
Definitely a great trio to start the discussion on who are the all-time greats in the program.
At first, I was going to say that as long as Smart and his DC put together a good defense, they will be in the NC conversation, but then I remembered Iowa. On a serious note, though, it's hard to have an elite shut down defense every game of the season, especially if they keep adding games. Any game could turn into the Georgia/OSU shootout.
Possibly to get style points for recruiting, especially on the defensive side of the ball. I'm all for it.
Kentucky was in the dark ages for decades, so I can totally understand enjoying it while it lasts. I can take a down year from Stoops considering where he has the program at now. You got a great one in Smart (I love me a good defensive coach). Can't believe it was just a few years ago that he was getting criticized for how he handled the QB room.
Nothing wrong with scheduling G5 teams, to me. Some of them have good talent, especially with the transfer portal.
He's the GOAT purely because of still drunk interview the morning after UGA won it all last year.
I'm not sure why he was downplaying the transfer portal at all. It was a very bad take. Depth is key to not only winning games, but to make sure you are developing players in practice.
He was a terrible recruiter in his second Louisville stint. He was focusing on offensive skill players and let some other local Louisville and Kentucky talent slip away. The end of his tenure was really bad because their O Line was over matched and their defense was terrible. He did well at the beginning because he had Charlie Strong's players, kind of like how Grantham always does well when inheriting players.
It's really the O Line and our RBs. Rodriguez was great, but we didn't have a second or third stringer that were really effective. We really need a O Line that can consistently open holes that anyone can run through, but also guys who can also make something out of less than ideal blocking. I feel good about the passing offense with Coen coming back as long as the other issues get addressed.
Imagine doing that in the first place, except in self-defense.
I wonder how much recruiting he'll be expected to do. It took a huge dive at Louisville while he was there during his second stint and word around town was that he never reached out to coaches or did anything there. It isn't the most fertile recruiting area in the country, but there were some good players that were well coached that he could have used.
I think you are absolutely right. USF would be my bet because of recruiting and the path to winning isn't that terrible there. Moving up to FBS means he can more consistently recruit some P5 talent, even if they are on the lower end of the talent scale.
KYHoosier is right. It's a mix of talent and coaching that has to be right for things to work out, especially in the SEC. The next hire probably won't have the luxury of Levis, our WRs will still be pretty young, RBs and OL will be a toss up.
Crazy thing about Eddie Gran was that there were some games where the play calling was absolutely brilliant. When we beat Louisville the year Jackson won the Heisman or the year when we could have beat Georgia if not for a Jeff Badet bumbled catch that landed in a Georgia DB's hands. I'm not sure how much was on him, Stoops, or Stephen Johnson.
